My current group is bogged down in the Kingmaker adventure path and, unfortunately, due to scheduling issues hasn't been able to play for awhile.
I am considering a fresh start with the Jade Regent adventure path but was hoping to have a beginning adventure, a short snippet of an adventure, where the group has a bit of time getting to know each other and the NPC's before they get to the meat of the path.
Any suggestions on d20 or easily adapted published/free online adventures that would work with this adventure path?

We Be Goblins is somewhat intended as a sort of prequel to what is going on in the first adventure, but isn't really tied to the AP as a whole.
The downside is that you don't really get to know the NPCs... at least not the ones that will be active in the AP.
On the other hand, it is free. So the price is right.
Worth checking out if nothing else.

Thank you Sean, I will take a look. I am hopeful that it will work out for the group.

Just a thought, but if your group hasn't already played the Runelords AP, you could run a simplified version of AP #1. (The 1st couple sections anyway.) It's not a free adventure, of course, but it could easily lead into Jade Regent #1 and give your group time to bond with key NPC's.

Thank you for the thought. I ended up running the "We Be Goblins" prelude adventure. The group had fun with it, perhaps a little too much since I have had a couple of inquiries into playing a goblin PC for the main campaign. Players have to ask I suppose

You should check out Clark Peterson's thread about his campaign as well.

I second this, though parts of it would have been more useful before starting We Be Goblins. I used Clark's notes extensively, and with great success, in my home game.

I left out the 'We be goblins' adventure, and I really regretted it in the first half of Brinewall Legacy. The first bit of the adventure is a sandbox, and I felt sort of like I was railroading them through it, (because essentially a lot of the 'hook' for the sandbox is the player's interest in the goblin village from their experience in "We Be Goblins") I'm planning to run a 'prequel' adventure before each module of the campaign going forward. I pulled this off with great success in Kalsgard, where the players assumed the role of thieves, and stole an artifact which is one of the main objectives for the PC's to acquire in chapter II of the AP. I also fueled their ire against two of the bad guys, by having them betrayed after retrieving this artifact. I'm certain that the PC's will really enjoy 'avenging' these NPC's they had a chance to play. I'm going to try to do a little interlude like this before each new module, to tell a bit more of the 'behind-the-scenes' story, that the PC's don't get to read in the AP. It worked really with with "Night of Frozen Shadows" and again, one of my biggest regrets at the start of the campaign was that I didn't start off with "We Be Goblins" My other big piece of advice for Jade Regent is to read the NPC entries. I overlooked them in Brinewall, which led to a flat portrayal of these important NPCs who will essentially be the 'mobile village' traveling with the party. They are more than just stat blocks (although they do have stats), they provide the motivations and quirks which would really have helped flesh out these NPCs.
