Do I need to read it first?

Beginner Box

When the beginner box showed up in the mail (I subscribe) I didn't know what to do with it at first. Certainly my usual group has no need for something like that.

So I gave it to a friend who has seemed interested in rpg's in the past, but never played as a christmas gift.

Well yesterday I was asked if I'd be willing to GM it, and I said yes. This will be a group of people who have never played any pen and paper games.

The thing is I'm at work now and tonight we play, I will have little or no time to prepare. Will that be ok? I seem to remember reading on the back of the box before I wrapped it you could start in 10 minutes of opening the box, is this true?

Scarab Sages

If you are talking about the Black Fang adventure that is in the Game Master's Guide, you probably would be well-served to take a few minutes to review it before running it. If you are an experienced GM, that may be enough time to comprehend the encounters, stat blocks, theme, etc. If you don't GM that often, more time may be necessary to prepare the adventure.

Allright thanks, I'll try to get in a quick read through before beginning then. And yeah I was thinking of doing the enclosed adventure tonight.

Scarab Sages

After you run it, I would be interested in hearing if your quick read through was sufficient time to prep the adventure.

Hope everybody has fun with it. If you introduce a group of new gamers to the hobby in general and Pathfinder in specific, you are doing a great thing.

You'll probably want to block off the first 15-20 minutes for the players to look over their character sheets as well, s ocan use that time to have a look through it.

There are rules changes you should be aware of such as: no combat maneuvers, no AoOs, some changed class abilities etc.

I would recommend using easy adventures both because the players are new, but also because the pregens are not combat machines.

It worked ok with no preperation, I wasn't aware of the no AoO thing so I'll take a closer look at the changed rules before we play again.
