Which Familiar for my Witch?

Advice

I am looking to play a witch who focuses on debuffing enemies, specifically enemy spellcasters. Because familiars are able to deliver touch attacks, I want to have a familiar that will be able to do so effectively.

I am aware that familiars are squishy, so this is a bit tricky.

What do you suggest I do?

A lyrakien at level 7, and have it use wands/SLA's to support you while hanging out in safe locations.

I would totally not risk a familiar delivering Touch Attacks as a Witch. The penalties for losing your familiar are waaaaaay too harsh to justify the risk, especially when compared with a Wizard. If you need to deliver such spells at a distance, I believe Spectral Hand(?) is a 2nd level spell that will allow you to do so without risking effective character death (500 gp/level, plus the cost of replacing spells) if your familiar drops.

Regardless, you have plenty of non-touch based debuffs to draw from.

Improved familiar imp. They can turn invisible at will.

improved familiar, anything that can manipulate things and fly.

also evolve familiar increase the natural ac... or basic magic

A silvanshee, but you will have to spend a feat on Improved Familiar and wait until 7th level. It's about to get nerfed, but even so, having a familiar that can heal you 1/day is pretty good. And it still looks like the traditional Witch's cat.

I took a Greensting Scorpion (+2 Initiative) along with Improved Initiative for a +10 initiative at level 1 (18 dex).

Cool, this helps a good deal. I think I will take the advice and NOT use my familiar for touch attacks. Spectral Hand is excellent, I can't believe I forgot about that spell.

Go Raccoon, it can pick pockets!

Eh, there are better options then Spectral Hand. My recommendation is drop a hex on Prehensile Hair, it's a 15 foot reach that can deliver touch attacks without provoking and gives you a good chance to trip anyone who moves to attack you after bad touching them.

For your original question prior to taking improved familiar you will want the Raven. Flight, Speech for UMD, decent skill bonus and demonstrable tool use.
(A case can be made for the Thrush since it gives a better skill bonus but there is less evidence for tool use so it depends on how flexible your GM is.)

I know this isn't helpful but maybe you can bring it up to your GM. We let people pick any of the bonuses the familiar gives with any of the familiars. Since the way the familiar looks is more a personal thing and the bonuses are honestly not even.

Prehensile Hair is an excellent way to do it, and Extra Hex: Prehensile Hair is better than Skill Focus: Knowledge (Dungeoneering), Eldritch Heritage: Aberrant, and Improved Eldritch Heritage: Long Limbs.

Otherwise, get an Evolved Familiar with Reach. But even then, I don't recommend it.

Which book is that out of ? I can't seem to find it in Core, APG, UM, or UC (the 4 books my GMs allow).

I grabbed a Hedgehog at 1st level. He gives a +2 to Will saves which I really liked early on. He isn't a really nice Hedgehog, so when my witch gets the nerve, she is going to drop him off a cliff and take Improved Familiar. The roleplaying part is important to me, so the timing to do so will have to be right and also play into the whole Patron thing. Going to see if my DM will allow me to switch Patrons too.

I am looking at Earth Elemental to deliver the touch attacks via Earth Glide and Burrow. Since we seem to have most of our adventures so far in dungeons or in the wild, this made sense to me.

Bestiary 2 I think.

Lunge feat.

I was thinking Viper might be cool for Bluff checks on a witch I'm working on. It's pretty much a free skill focus, and I think a deceptive witch is just cool from a character standpoint (not to mention I'm pretty sure there's a deception patron, even though I think I'll go with insanity instead).

If you took the trait that gives you +1 to bluff and makes it a class skill (fast talker, I think), then take the viper, and give yourself 14 charisma, you start out with a +10. So, that's acceptable, if I'm not mistaken. Take that disguise hex, and all of a sudden you're the teams infiltrator :D. Could be fun. I've never tested it.
