So, what happens if a druid casts AWAKEN on your animal familiar?

Rules Questions

The spell causes a permanent change in the animal. The spell says "An awakened animal can't serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount."

Does this mean you lose the animal as a familiar?

Supposing you lost your familiar, how does that affect the spell caster, ie, is it like losing a focus: DC check to cast a spell?

Familiars are not animals, they are Magical Beasts. So nothing, as they aren't legal targets.

Right?

What Krispy said.

Familiar = magical beast. Not a target for the spell. Even if it was...

RAW are that way. If the GM is in a mood, like I would be, I would let you discover that your familiar gains the accent of a nagging Jewish Bronx Grandmother that is always on your case. :P

Changed my mind. It sounds like Edith Bunker.

I thought Magical Beasts mean owlbears and the like, not a natural animal. So Magical Beast is a sort of monster classification? Like Giant, Outsider, etc? I thought it would be excluded by a magical circle, radiate as magic, that sort of thing.

'It retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats of the normal animal it once was, but is now a magical beast for the purpose of effects that depend on its type. Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar.'

Stat wise, don't animals have less than a 3 int?

Thats why I avoid egotistical vain Chaotic Nuetral DMs like you. :P

Does anyone want to take the other half of the question? Is there any effect for NOT having a familiar?

Sure. you lose the bonii granted by having the familiar close to you. Familiars can be replaced a week later with a 200gp/wiz level ritual. It's all in the rules under familairs, I'd suggest reading up.

and yes, magical beast is a creature type. Like undead, humanoid, etc

Bolded the part in your own quote that shows why it won't work. It's a magical beast, and awaken depends on it being an animal.

No, you don't lose anything (other than the bonuses of having a familiar) if your familiar is lost or dismissed. The only rule, in that case, is:

Tilnar, I guess I didn't distinguish between 'magical beast' in a general sense and 'Magical Beast' as listed on page 308 of the Bestiary.

I also did reread Familiars on page 83 of the CR and noticed my mistake about familiars having a SIX int and not an animal TWO int. I want to thank the community for kindly pointing that out to me.
