2 people marked this as a favorite.

I have a gunslinger for PFS. Please keep the boos to yourself. I have enough GMs trying to kill me on principal alone. I made him back during the 2nd round of play testing. When Ultimate Combat came out I gave him the pistolero archtype.

My question is was that legal. I wanted to know if anyone knew the official ruling on it. (A few months late but I went a couple without playing him too.) Please let me know if I should change him back. I'd like to keep everything Society legal.

Welcome WongNumber7.

Are you familiar with the additional resources page? It explains everything that's legal in Ultimate Combat.

Naturally, you'll need to bring a copy of the gunslinger pages out of UC when you play your character.

If it is in the published version of Ultimate Combat, then it is legal. If it is not in it, then it is not legal. You will need to own a copy of UC in order to legally play a gunslinger. Here is the relevant text from the Additional Resources page for PFS:

Quote:

The playtest versions of the gunslinger, ninja, and samurai are no longer legal for play as of 8/4/11. Anyone playing the playtest version must have updated his or her character as of 8/4/11. Updating your character means adjusting only the things that have changed, but not rebuilding the character.

All material from this book is legal for play except as noted below. Some rules elements are legal but function differently in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, as described.

Gunslinger: A gunslinger’s starting gun (granted by the gunsmith class feature) is worth 22 gp if sold (the average of 4d10).
A gunslinger begins each scenario with her Wisdom modifier in grit (or her maximum grit if she has the Extra Grit feat). Any additional grit earned above her starting grit does not carry over past the scenario’s conclusion.
The Daring Act optional rule is not used in the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign.

Quote:

The following two feats function differently in Pathfinder Society Organized Play than they do in regular games:

Gunsmithing does not grant the ability to craft firearms, ammunition, or black powder. Rather, it allows the purchase of bullets, pellets, black powder, and alchemical cartridges (with 1 rank in Craft [alchemy]) at the listed reduced price, but does not grant a discount on the purchase of any firearm. Resold items gained through this feat are worth half the actual cost paid, not half the regular market value for the item. No PC can purchase a gun without this feat, even if they possess the Amateur Gunslinger or Exotic Weapon Proficiency (firearm) feats.

Also, all archetypes specifically for the gunslinger class are legal for PFS play, while most (or is it all?) gun archetypes for other classes are not, so if pistolero is a gunslinger archetype and in the book, then it is good. I do not have the book in front of me, so I cannot confirm this for you.

I think you guys are Missing what he is saying... He is saying I think, That he Added the Pistolero Archetype after already playing the PC during the play test. Is this correct?

This is how it works with Archetypes in PFS, which is actually different then the Written rules for the Archetypes.

PFS Archetype Rules - Archetypes can be taking as long as you have not reached the level of the first ability given by the Archetype.

Since Pistolero's first Ability is given at first level, Up Close and Deadly (Ex), You can not take the Archetype after the fact so no it is not legal even though as others mention above the Archetype is legal for PFS play.

By the way, the rule as written for Archetypes is that Archetypes must be taken at the first level of the class, this is a rare rule PFS deviates from.

I should have been clearer in my first statement. Dragonmoon is correct.

Unfortunately I was level five when UC came out so no archtypes for me. I'll make the necessary changes so everything's kosher again.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Actually, I believe he could rebuild the character / add an archetype because it was created during the playtest period, and may have needed updating to fit the final published version of the class.

Actually Alexander, he wouldn't be able to, because at level 5, he would have already have passed the first level that he had to take the archetype at. To take the Pistolero Archetype, he would have to do a complete rebuild of the character.

I believe, in this situation, you are only allowed to rebuild to correct the things that have changed. Not do a complete rebuild.
