Need help resolving 20 year-old mystery...Was it a dream?

Off-Topic Discussions

Roughly 20 years ago I had a period of trouble getting to sleep and would listen to lots of different radio stations late at night trying to relax and get some zzzs. Half-asleep, or maybe three quarters asleep one night, I was listening to a Washington based station play a song called "For the Crow" and I believe the band's name was The Rubes, or The Rudes, or something similar. Of course, really enjoying the song, I fell asleep....When I woke up the next morning I decided to hunt for an album or single. In that dim near-Hyborian age before iTunes, the local indie store Zulu didn't have anything by this phantom group I'm not sure I actually heard, or just half-made up in my head.....Anyone Washingtonians actually remember this band? Or did I just dream up the whole thing.....

(And no, I did not just watch "The Crow" on TV that night.....)

David Ryan Harris released 'Sympathy for the Crow' in 1997, he was Follow for Now's frontman.

Other than that, though, I've got nothing.

Theres no way this song would help you sleep...but I have to post a song from 16 years ago.

Stone the Crow - Down

What kind of station was it? Oldies? Alterna-pop? Rap? Country?

Liberty's Edge

Any word on the genre of the song? Remember any of the lyrics?

Digging up long-lost songs is my specialty.

As best as my fuzzy memory can put together, it was vaguely Stone Temple Pilotish....Definitely not grunge, it seemed a little more shiny? By today's Pro Tools production standards, probably not heavily produced, but for back then it would have been....

BTW Marshall and Drunken Nomad, those weren't the song I'm looking for, but I like them both nonetheless...Who knew crows were such an inspired song title?

Liberty's Edge

I once thought a song I liked was by a band called The Black Crows. It was only years later I discovered it was by the Black Keys. Tangential!

Good work, yellowdingo.

Crows must be one of the most referenced creatures in art: Ted Hughes' Crow is one of my favourite poetry collections.

Broken link. Fixed.

Very cool! Good detective work yellowdingo. Song reminds me of Brother Cane, kinda.

The chord structure reminds me of Dear Prudence. Which I had to listen to for like 3 weeks on constant loop while mixing a cover of it in Recording School.

Sounds very bluesy.

There's a CD I have by a group called Rame that I could never find anything about.

Huh. Sounds like Alice In Chains trying to play country music. Very Australian. I like it.

That's it. I was trying to wrap my head around the sound, and you're pretty much spot-on. I kinda like it too.

If you're pulling that from the Myspace page that's when the "album" i.e. collection of songs was posted on Myspace. Doesn't mean the song isn't much older, or maybe this is a newer version of the song.

Yes! Mystery solved!

Yellowdingo - Many thanks. I've looked for that song on and off for a lot of years. I'm curious, did you know the band? Or are you just awesome with search functions?

I have to agree with that too. It's slightly different from the version I remember. But having said that, my memory is FAR from perfect.

The dates certainly don't jive. And I could certainly be off by as much as 5 or 6 years. But I am sure that it wasn't 2007 that I heard this song. The circumstances of my life changing in that timeframe would have to mean I have been pulled into a parallel timeline to be that far off...Not sure how to explain the discrepancy though....

Maybe it was a dream. I've dreamed things before they've happened. I think everyone has, they just won't admit it.

OK, here's a musical mystery for you:

I was listening to the radio driving back from Glens Falls, and a song came on some indie rock station. It was some hipster-ish tune that seemed to be lifted whole cloth from Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People," only with the key changed. It was so close that I was actually able to sing along to the song with Manson's lyrics instead of hipster band's. Does anyone know this song?

I heard it long ago - and vaguely remembered the name of the band (we have a sort of MTV show on the Australian Broadcast Corporation called RAGE - Friday and Saturday nights from late to dawn).

I dreamed Battle Star Galactica with the female Starbuck back in 1985 - and I know I've been exposed to a man-made singularity to assassinate me so yea i know why we dream things before they happen (space-time is all screwed up).

Ah, you found my driver's license photo! Here's a family shot of me and my cousin, a black hole hanging out in the hot tub (.X) Man that guy can binge.

My parents made me... and I singled him out because of his Promethean knowledge of space-time's infinite intricasies. No mortal was ever meant to weild such power! The universe must correct itself!
