I am sure that is true. Things would be very civil. However, considering the then very real risk of, say, lawsuits and similar crap, it would also be an empty place. Disclosure brings benefits, and those who want it always focus only on that. The fact that it will also bring very real costs is something they either choose to gloss over or are too naive to understand.
Can we please not have to hear that in every discussion already?

Although, just about 100% of the "bad" reasons why Paizo doesn't want to have signatures, or images, etc would be erased if a posting member is required to attach his or her real first & last name to every post. It's amazing how civil and clean things remain when a person can't hide behind a screen.
No they absolutely would not.

If you mean the thing where you insert tags that will embed an image hosted somewhere other than paizo.com directly in the page, no we will not be doing that. The main reasons are: Remotely hosted images can be changed maliciously to become pornographic or shock images. It is a security risk. And most importantly, we prefer people to use their words rather than depending on a "U MAD BRO" image macro to communicate. There's lots of places on the internet for that kind of thing, just not here.
...
So, signatures: No. Animated gifs: No. Smilies: No. Inline images: No. Private messages: Someday. Volunteer moderators: No. Private avatars: No. Switching to 3rd-party bulletin board software: No. Firing the twelve-year-olds responsible for our website design and getting us out of the '90s: Someday. Using PHP: No. Outsourcing website design, maintenance, moderation: No. Adding features like focus, dots, x new, aliases, enhancing play-by-post, etc: ongoing.
I cannot thank you enough, Paizo, for keeping it the way it is with little improvements which add to the purpose of these forums. I am really tired of all the requests "because, you know, it's like this over there"...
Keep it simple, keep it clean, and make it stay centered about comprehensible written/typed messages revolving around Pathfinder!

I get and appreciate not being to put up images directly in a post, and like that I can come here and not have conversations turn into 8,000 ORLY owls or popular-gif-of-the moment.
The one good use I CAN see image hosting for is posting battle maps and "handouts" for pbps, however, and I am wondering if there is a way the boards can accommodate that? Not posting them in threads, but since we now have those lovely handy dandy campaign tracking tabs, maybe there could be a tab that GMs (and GMs who opened that campaign only) could upload game related images to?

I do look forward to the day when this forum has private messages, but that's really the only thing I miss that is standard on other forums. That could be resolved with a Forum-to-email solution though, so forum members could send emails to other forum members without giving out their own email address. (Of course there could be concerns with the form submission-to-email being exploitable by spammers.) Having it go directly to email would remedy message storing issues though.
Because Paizo's ecommerce operation relies on ISPs not viewing us as a source of spam, we're very careful about the quantity and type of emails originating from our server. As a result, allowing customers to directly generate lots of email with non-predetermined content isn't in our plan.
Private messaging *is* in our plan, though.

I just want to say that because this site doesn't have images, is funded via sales of product, and limits functionality found elsewhere, I CAN feel comfortable using this place over my work computer. I would not be able to spend as much time here if I had to do a large amount of self-policing regarding what other people want to put on my screen.
So thank you, Paizo, for keeping this place safe.
Although I would appreciate the availability of a wine-themed avatar.

I have to agree. With the text only nature of the site, I can spend time on here without fear of inappropriate images showing up.
I also like the fact that you guys use home-grown forum software. It doesn't flag the same way as other forums in our firewall.

Removed a post. While rape is often the "default offensive joke" it really doesn't have to be, and I'm kind of tired of seeing it used that way.
It seems moderation comment usually should go by without comment, but I really respect this moderation. I think I get your point, by being the go to "joke" it marginalizes or at least desensitizes the horror of the actual thing. So I'm not being clear, I just wanted to say thank you for making a positive statement and moderation choice.

Okay, for those of you depraved enough to run it...
... I've created a script that will embed inline YouTube videos and images.
You'll need either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome in order to make use of the script.
.
Firefox (Notes)
If you're running Firefox, you'll need to install the Greasemonkey Plug-In in order to run the script.
Installation
Both Chrome and Firefox make use of the same script. Click on the link to the script, and you should be prompted to install it:
General Notes
This script is not at all smart. You have been warned.
If somebody links to a huge image, the script will happily inline it for you; possibly disrupting your forum experience.
If somebody links something Not Safe For Work (NSFW); [adult content, obscene material, etc], the script will happily inline it for you.
And you may scroll down into it, just as your very strict boss is walking by.
You run this script at your own risk.

I have installed this, and it is awesome.

What would be cool is if there was something like a signatures that aliases could have that had vital information for the pbps. Alot of the DM's like it when players add this information to each post, so it is immediately available for them to see. Something as simple as what is at the top of my post would be awesome. However, Even that can be exploitable. If this could be done is there a way to limit it so that the option only works on the pbp threads?

Profile pages can have this information in them—it's fairly straightforward to have new tabs open with the player profiles so you can adjudicate as necessary.

While a very intriguing idea, and one that when I first read, I thought yeah, that would be cool, on a second thought, I don't like it. It will have the same effect as signatures, to clutter up the PBP thread with the same information repeated over and over. I prefer that information to be placed in the character profile where I can refer to it as needed.

+1 to Tordek. Plus, that information is generally only referenced in combat; you don't need it when you're chatting in the tavern or sitting around the campfire. And if you're going to have to manually update your hp, damage, buffs, etc., every round, I don't see that a pre-made form is going to save you all that much time.

I have created a new utility script/extension for the Play-by-Post forums. It provides a tooltip like popup when you mouse over the avatar of the poster, loaded from the character's profile.
In order to use this script, you must be running Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
Mozilla Firefox (Notes)
If you have Firefox, you will need to install the Greasemonkey Plug-In before you will be able to use the script.
Installation
Both Firefox and Chrome use the same Play-by-Post script. Click the link to the script and you should be prompted to install it.
Usage
The script only operates on the Play-by-Post forums. The address in your address bar must start with: http://paizo.com/campaigns/
Popup Tags
On the profile of your Play-by-Post character, you need to mark the information you'd like to show in the popup with the following tags:
{popup} your info goes here {/popup}
For an example, see my character Elvombor Isebring, scroll all the way down and see the bit between the {popup} tags.
Mouse Over
After you've marked up your popup information, in any Play-by-Post game where that character has posted, simply mouse over the avatar.
For an example, see Elvombor's first post in Eberron: The Days of Future's Past (Siberys Group) and mouse over his avatar picture.
General Notes
You only need the script if you want to see the popup information.
You can still use the {popup}{/popup} tags in your character's profile as a reference for others, even if you don't personally run the script.

There are lots of times when I come to the boards with my smart phone. As awesome as it is that I can use my phone to access the internet, sometimes images slow it down. In addition, my wonderful carrier has a pseudo-cap on the amount of data I can use every month. Once I exceed 2G, they slow down my data usage considerably. Tons of images start to eat into that quickly. Also, images tend to make it more annoying to read threads on my phone from other message boards.

What about however if that signature was only displayed on that character's latest post in the thread, once per page, or have them all combined at the end of the last page?
I don't expect that every post in the thread would need the signature information forever, I'm pretty sure that the most use of it would come from it being only in last action of the character.

Bobson |

For example, here's my post on another forum, with an embedded image in my signature. Is it truly that terrible?
Just pointing out yet another flaw of embedded images - if this image was directly included on the page, there would now be an "Image not found" box there instead.
