Racial Boons - what are they, and when will UK get them (if at all)?

Hi

Was recently asked by a US player about Racial Boons, and how to implement them.

Hadn't the foggiest idea what he was on about, never having seen them in UK.

So, as the the title says, what are these Racial Boons, will they be available in UK, and when?

We've just had Dragonmeet in London, and I'vev not seen any racial boons. WIll they be available at Conception (in Jan) and how do we players get hold of them?

(I'm interested in the nerfed version of Tiefling in Council of Thieves). As a GM, I'm not sure how to deal with them, since there's nothing under 'allowable resources' (So I'll prob have to disallow).

Thanks

Basically, they let you make a new character of a race that isn't otherwise PFS approved.

Another way to look at it is you get a head jump on a PFS character of a race that'll (probably) eventually be approved for PFS play once the new alternate race book comes out.

I've only personally seen 2 boons, but they are identical to the 'monsters as PC' stats given in their respective bestiary entries. (yes, Tiefling was one of them.. its the same stats as in the book rather than a nerfed version)

I'm pretty surprised by your posting. When I asked the GMs how best to distribute the boons at Dragonmeet (you were one of them) and most GMs wanted to follow Robs suggestion than this was exactly such boons.
There had been three to be distributed - one was a racial boon. If i didn't share what boons i had then because i didnt wanted to discuss if the racial boon goes in the morning or the afternoon. Also one (not a racial one) went to the table you played at in the afternoon.
There was also at least one racial boon at OddCon and I'm sure there will be some at Conception.

They have been pretty rare in the UK - but I took care we had one at Dragonmeet.

Hi

Yes, I was aware there were three boons, but weren't told what they were. (Or even shown them). Since we all had the other 'holiday' boons, I thought it was a better version of those.

I would expect there to be some at Conception, but how many, and how will they be distributed? Can't remember specifics, but don't we have 80-100+ tables of PFS?

Lastly, how will I treat the boon on any table I GM? There's no info on the 'allowable resources' section. Are the full details on the Chronicle itself? Heard from US player that one of the boons already on EBay for $50!

Lack of info sows confusion - in this case major imbalances as a few players may have access to none-core races, whilst GM's kept in the dark.

Will someone please update the 'Allowable Resources' bit to include the info?

PS Thodd - Thanks for ensuring we got something. Would have been nice knowing what it was. (Poss after it was given out)?
PPS Will all players eventually have access to alternate races? The nerfed Tiefling from Council of Thieves looks good. Just like to plan ahead with my characters.

Hi PaulH,

Speaking from the Australian experience - no, we don't advertise which boons are going to be available where ahead of time, and distribution isn't revealed until it happens. Boons are surprise rewards for those who attend certain events, typically the larger conventions in a region where they'll reach the most players - so support your local events and help boost attendance. If you think your event qualifies, then you should contact your local Venture-Captain for support, though not every event receives boons.

The race isn't listed on the Available Resources page, because they aren't legal for general play. The boon is what makes the race legal for that character only, and the player must carry a copy of the relevant Bestiary (or an electronic or printed page with his name/email watermarked on the copy) for the GM to reference at the table.

Hi Paul,

The situation is pretty much as Stephen and Thod have said. So we're not advertising what boons there may be at conventions (but rest assured they are available for any major conventions you can 'conceive' of) and they are intended to be suitably rare.

There were some three special boons available at Oddcon (including one race boon) plus a special DM boon. Thod has said about what was available at Dragonmeet. There was also a special player boon and GM boon for playing the Beginner Box Bash scenarios I was running.

As far how to apply them, the full rules are on the chronicle sheet as they are not part of general play. So you only need to worry about them if someone actually has the boon and in that case they will have the chronicle sheet with the rules of the particular race.

Hi

Thanks for that. My main concern was what to do if they appearead on a table I was GM'ing. (Though I am still interested if elements of the ARG become accessible).

If all the details are on the Chroniicle sheet iteself, then my main question's answered.

Thanks

it's worded along the lines of "you may use the ____ rules on page XX of book ____. Whenever you use this character, you must bring this book with you. "

Hi

It's the 'bring this book ...' bit that's difficult. Since the book's not due out until April, the boons out now.

Simpler when the specific details are on the chronicle sheet. (As been explained).

Thanks

That is correct. The Chronicle states that the character uses the rules in the Bestiary or Bestiary 2, depending on the race.

So far, IIRC, there have been boons for: tieflings, aasimar, tengu, dhampir, undines, sylphs, ifrits, and oreads.

Hoping beyond hope to score one of these at a Sydney game but I don't play more than once a month or so and if I have a convention presence its only a day in three.

One day we can hope.
