Recently my group came into possession of a little girl to which our characters have turned into concerned uncles over her well being (except for the Cleric who's generally a perverted ass, and the Ranger who's far too responsible for his Chaotic alignment). She's not like normal little girls, most little girls can't copy spells and cast them at will as a spell like ability. But she was cute and it was funny to teach her to say "Roofies!" when she hits somebody with color spray and stuns them for a few rounds. At first I thought she was being screwing with our group, but it turns out she's something a little scarier. A super powered 5 year old.
Last session our group got the chance to trade a natural 20 knowledge check for a piece of information of our choice from an ancient green dragon: Where the lost prince of the kingdom was, or what the little girl really is. Now half the party wants to take her back where she came from.
The little girl turned out to be a figment of a god. A leftover idea that took form. So she gets to cast Limited Wish at will as a spell like ability (this is with a few limitations, not 5th level Cleric Spells). She literally warps reality around her to fit her perception of how things should work. As in, she didn't die from starvation nor age after coming out of the Astral Plane because she didn't know she was supposed to.
So here we are with this little god-girl, I'm guessing a human with the young template, and a Lawful Evil being that trades in information. What she is might not stay a secret for long.
How would we go about protecting her from people who want to steal her? How should we shelter her from learning spells that might kill her? What defensive spells should we show her? How should we make sure she stays safe during combat when we're definitely going to be abusing her infinite cure critical wounds out of combat? I doubt "Leaving her with the horses" will cut it. The last thing we want to happen is needing to make a fast getaway and finding out she'd color sprayed the horses into unicorns.
For the record: I love my DM's story lines. But he gives us more than enough rope to hang ourselves with.

Totally different setting, But this might help a little on how to keep a kid that can warp reality on a whim from hurting themselves or everything around them. Link *Shrug* Not sure how usefull it'll be, but still.

So long as she isn't a Mary Sue, this whole plotline sounds pretty cool and interesting.
Regarding the dragon, though, I'd be more afraid of what he didn't tell you.

Speaking of what the dragon didn't tell you, did he happen to mention which god? The simple answer, if this is a god in line with your characters' ethics and morals, would seem to be to get her to the most significant church of that god. In fact, they might be among the people that want to "steal" her...
How should we shelter her from learning spells that might kill her?
You mentioned "copy spells"? You mean she sees a spell and can mimic it? Or is she literally writing the spells somewhere? Does she retain the spell once she casts it? How well does the simple approach work? You could just have the real heart to heart about some magic being dangerous but some being safe and helpful, etc.
Then again, how potent is that reality warping thing you mentioned? You might not need to worry. If she didn't starve because she didn't know she should, she might not burn in a fireball because she doesn't know her own magic should hurt her... or you, for that matter. Some experimentation might be in order...
What defensive spells should we show her?
ALL of them!
How should we make sure she stays safe during combat when we're definitely going to be abusing her infinite cure critical wounds out of combat?
The simple answer: DON'T ABUSE HER CURE CRIT... or anything else, for that matter. Have you considered that she's in your care as part of a test?
And while this is metagaming, my players have developed a strategy that works in nearly any game that goes like this:
Its the GM's job to supply sufficient challenge to the PC's. If the PC's load for bear, then they will face the bear.

Hmmm... maybe i´m over-preparing as a player... and talk to much about it, to early.
Anyways: We once picked up a girl in a campaign, daughter of a powerfull wizard and like-wise powerfull cleric, who "multi-classed" at 14 or so.
Now, nobody was after her, our villa was heavily protected and we had quite powerfull wizards ourselves, still we went for outside, professional help.
In our case, Kelben Blackstaff´s wife/lover/relative,( we never asked, she was way more scary and dangerous than her man), who agreed to tutor the girl in magic, while she lived in a temple´s orphanage, a nice one.;)

Very important is also who´s "brain-child" she is and what mood the creating god was in. Imagine Asmodeus, having an indecent thought, like say, doing something nice to/for Sarenrae. Or Iomedea loosing her temper.
Or was the creation intended, for a specific purpose ? Leads to the good ole´: Might we have to KILL her at some point ?
As a player i´d definetly want more information, very much from a different source.
One way or another, lots of people will be after her soon, propably beyond the PC´s abilities to cope with. Now since this is beyond-mortal bussiness, this could take a while, but it might not.

Far from a Mary Sue. She's just a little girl who doesn't know that she's special, she thinks everything is normal. Really, a sweet child. My shadowdancer has been using Silent Image to play giant dolls with her, and it's been amazing.
Sense he didn't ask for sense motive checks, I think the dragon was on the level or didn't have a high enough knowledge check to know anything else. Between our Bard and Master Spy, getting away with lying to use or withholding information is rather difficult.

I got the feeling that the specific god wasn't really important. She was more of an accident than a purpose. Her alignment is "Child" or Neutral.

She's a spontaneous caster that can mimic all 6th or lower wizard/sorcerer spells as per Limited Wish. She seems to be able to copy any spell she sees once. Like Feather Fall we labeled "Wheee!" and Color Spray we labeled "Roofies!". Basically making a child code language for her.
Her hit points are negligible so testing wouldn't be wise. What's really bugging me is how her worldviews will change her, like when she realizes that the stove burns. What if she gets it into her head that everyone disappears when she closes her eyes?
ALL of them!
Not much of a caster. This campaign is actually my first, so spells I'm familiar with is quite short.

I wish we could. I would really just like to bring her along for the comic relief and keep her as a side quest. However, my group may be tempted. We have someone who wants to power game.
Reading that link now, thank you for the responses guys.

Regardless, she's a divine entity, and you need advice from those experienced with the divine.

This is precisely why IMO you need to get some help.
Just my 2 cents, but if I were a player in that game, I wouldn't be trying to handle a 5 year old walking reality bomb without some serious back up, no matter how cute she is.

The only church we currently have ties with is the Church of Gorum. Maybe Torag? Desna? I don't want her to end up common knowledge. We will probably go looking for her "Parents" a duo of other adventurers that left her in the Astral Plane. We got her to copy their likeness into a Silent Image and can use that to find out who they were. Eventually.
RedPorcupine |
Desna?
Would be a good choice, they might have the knowledge and are unlikely to take advantage of the girl, due to the portfolio of their Mistress. I´d also recommend Sarenrae, more than Iomedea or Shelyn. Girls (should) stick together, though.
Gorumites would feel honour-bound at least to give her a proper martial training with all trappings, while Erastils would get all * patriachial * for a proper upbringing in a proper family, not this patchwork-thing of dubious and/or notorious characters YOU are running, harhahhar.;)PS: You got in your group: a ranger ( HARARANGER), a cleric( of what deity?), a bard, a master-spy and you play ?
Could you give a bit more background about your group and campaign-level ? Sounds like a fun-Motley-crew.

Totally off the topic, but I have to ask: what is that site you linked to all about? Is it a created writers' exercise, a game setting, what? As a fan of the old X-Files show and the Lost Room miniseries, I'm massively enjoying that site.
Back ON topic, this little girl at once reminds me of The White Rose from the Black Company books, and of Ivy from the Harry Dresden books. More the latter than the former, but that character can give some insights as to what kind of problems can arise when the young have too much power.

We had a similar story line in an Ebberon game where the child was the enbodyment of the silver flame and had to protect her from the people that wanted to hurt her, she also had a demonic invisible friend who would maul people who hurt her feelings. We couldnt leave her alone. Most of the party wanted to palm her off as soon as we could but she kept on turning up as part of our destiny. Its a long story arc of protecting her you have

Wait, why wouldn't you want her to turn the horses into unicorns? That would be awesome! Also, way better at the whole getaway thing.

That. Your pony doesn´t have to become your unicorn... but it might stay around for the girl...hmm... doubt it, knowing most GM´s;). If the getaway is so urgent that you won´t mind the loss of your horses, it might work ;D has to only once.
