Number of skill points, -2 inteligence modifier and favord class option.

Rules Questions

We had this issue come up, When leveling my fighterI opted for the skill rather than the hp ( we are using heroic HP in this game so I already had 43 at lvl 3...) I have a 7 inteligence for a -2 modifier, but you always get at least one skill. If I opt for the favored class option DO I get two skills? Another player thought the -2 modifier carried over into this as well.

Will some one please clear this up for me, or point to where this has already beem addressed.

You would get 2 skill points, which I personally don't think you should.

Any where this is stated? I also think that is the way it works, I am just looking for a way to prove it to the other player, is that an FAQ post from Jacobs etc?

Someone asked: "Do the bonus skill points a character gains for being human or taking a level in their favored class apply after a negative intelligence modifier or before.

For example, would a human with an intelligence of 5 get three skill points per level (2 for being a paladin, minus 3 for being dumb (minimum one), plus 1 for being human, plus 1 for taking a level in his favored class) or one (2 for being a paladin, plus one for being a human, plus one for taking a level in his favored class, minus three for being dumb)?"

Reply by James Jacobs (Creative Director): "In this case the human paladin would indeed gain 3 skill ranks per level, despite his low Intelligence."

The number of skill points gained each level, though your character always gets at least 1 skill point per level.

You get at least 1 skill point per level from intelligence, even if a PC had 5 INT. The favored class bonus is a racial trait, and thus they stack.

While I cant remeber where I saw it I belive the reason it would indeed be 2 is becuase its added after you total your normal skill points (otherwise characters with low skill, low-Intelligence would never bother with the skill option; you wouldnt never get a bonus).

So it would look like this (using your character)

2 Class - 2 Intelligence= 1 (the minimal) +1 Class Bonus=2 Skill Points Total.

Essentially a character, no matter how stupid they are, can at least get 2 skill points per level, so long as they take the Bonus Skill point option for each level.

My stupid Paladin, SAMHAIN AQUALUNG TULL, only gets 1 Skill point each level even if he were to choose Skill point instead of HP.

Thank you very much for the help, a post from jacobs is pretty much gold.

Bring him his broadsword, and clear understanding.

That's why I think the lowest number of skills in the game should be 4 not 2. If you dump you stat to 5 it's a -3 and you get 1 skill point. Then this problem disappears. So every class that get 2 now gets 4 skill points, classes that get 4 get 6, 6 gets 8 and 8 gets 10. It's house rule I have that I've never implemented.
