Unless a GM is pretty unimaginative, you can't completely avoid melee combat. In a game where you can attack everyone from a range every time, you're right, melee combat would be a bad idea. Unfortunately, it's generally a necessary evil and parties should be able to handle melee combat (including front-line melee characters).
