Barbarian Ideas

Advice

So i am somewhat new to the Pathfinder System. I have always like Barbarians and wanted to try one in this new system. i am just trying to bounce some ideas around and get some input.

I really Like The Ulfen's and the viking cultre so i was thinking about doing a Two Weapon Sword and Shield Barbarian but the limited Feats make it hard. I will be Starting at 6th level the stats i rolled in no particular order are:
18 17 16 15 14 12

I was thinking about the Invunerable Rager Archtype

And the rage powers it doesnt look like anything would really help me until 8th lvl

just looking for some Ideas.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

BARBARIAN AM HIGHLY AGAINST TWO WEAPON BUILDS, AS THEY REQUIRE LIKE SEVEN FEETS AND BARBARIAN ONLY HAVE TWO. A LEFT FEET AND A RIGHT FEET.

BARBARIAN RECOMMEND TAKING SUPERSTITCHIN LINE TO GET SPELL SUNDER, AM LIKE DISPEL MAGIC ONLY BETTER. AM ALSO RECOMMEND USING HUMAN FAVORED CLASS ABILITY FOR SUPERSTITCHIN BONUS.

EVENTUALLY AM PROBABLY WANT BEAST TOTEM LINE FOR POUNCE. BARBARIAN AM ALSO AGREE ABOUT INVULNERABLE RAGER BEING AWESOME. NOT UNDERESTIMATE MOUNT BARBARIAN, THOUGH. RAGELANCEPOUNCE AM MIGHTYFINE INDEED.

This explains his hate for casty's, his reactionary trait, and why he felt obligated to get that engineering degree.

TWF can work, despite AM BARBARIAN's doubts, but it is very feat-intensive to optimize. If you are not looking for optimization, TWF and Double Slice is just two feats and just about any a melee character can qualify since the only requirement is 15 Dex. That gives you more of your strength bonus to damage, so it is very worthwhile. There, TWF-barbarian done.

However, optimization-wise(sigh, sometimes I wanna go back to the FATE system), you need to keep picking further TWF feats in order to compete with the regular two-handed falchion murder machines. Improved TWF and TW Rend basically. I usually hesitate to recommend Two-Weapon Rend, since the requirements are so steep, but your strength skyrockets on latter levels, so that 1.5 modifier is pretty tasty. However, Greater TWF is a waste of a feat, unless you can afford the high Dexterity required.

Further notes on damage: Abilities that give you a stacking damage boost, like the Breaker's class ability and the Witch Hunter rage power are a godsent to a TWF-character, since they are added to every hit. I would not recommend going for the Breaker archetype in regular play, since using broken weapons is very fidgy and improvised weapons can't deal with damage resistance, but Witch Hunter is a great bonus that applies against almost every monster the higher the level.

So at level 12, assuming 28 str(20 base, 4 from belt, 6 from greater rage), you could be hitting for 1d4+17(+10 str mod, +4 witch hunter, +3 furious kukri) with an attack routine that goes like +27/+27/+22/+22/+17(same boni + the reckless abandon rage power). Can you say dervish?

I'm sure someone can give you the rundown of the other end of the multiattacking mayhem: the natural weapon barbarian. It's even better.

Now, what I would like to see somebody do is a dex-based barbarian. It's possible now with the Urban Barbarian archetype. Effective? Who knows. An Elven Urban Barbarian(a manic aristocrat, basically) with an agile curved blade perhaps.

Dark Archive

With the stats that you rolled you really could make a pretty effective TWF barbarian. I would recommend going with Human, Half-Orc or Half-Elf, so that you can bump your STR and have a good TWF weapon w/o "wasting" a feat: Two-Bladed Sword or Orc Double Axe. Either weapon allows you to easily switch between swinging with two hands (for times when you can't get a full attack -- this is an important concept for TWF builds, since you frequently have to move before you can attack) and swinging with TWF. Once you hit level 10 (Greater Beast Totem) you can charge and still get off a full attack, which makes the build even stronger!

For max effect you should start with 18 STR (+2 for racial, all stat bonuses go here!), 17 DEX and 16 CON. If you realy want to pickup Greater TWF at level 12, you'll have to put a couple of your stat bumps into DEX (to hit the 19 DEX prereq).

Anyway, here's the build feats/rage powers, by level:

Human or Half-Orc TWF Barbarian:

1) TWF & Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Two-Bladed Sword (for Human or 1/2 elf; Half-Orc gets Orc Double Axe for free)
2) RP: Reckless Abandon
3) Raging Vitality
4) RP: Lesser Beast Totem
5) Power Attack
6) RP: Witch Hunter
7) Improved TWF
8) RP: Beast Totem
9) Double Slice
10) RP: Greater Beast Totem (Pounce)
11) Two Weapon Rend
