Favorite Type of Monk?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Now that enough time has elapsed from the release of the Ultimate Monk (UC) I was wondering what was everyone's favorite type of monk and why?

I like the Many Styles as I am the type of person who can never make up their mind, so having every fighting style is fun. A lot of prep work to try remember how everything works together, but its fun.

Zen Archer, hands down.

Drunken Master.

Sort of related styles question: what's the better build to replicate Bruce Lee's style?

Shadow Lodge

just started playing a monk of the empty hand and am totally enjoying that everything is a weapon... pretty sweet at the low levels so far as I don't spend money on weapons... just pick up this and that and bam... then all the money can buy cool useful things and magic items... plus the fluff is fun to play with. I could beat you up with a feather pen (only d4 plus str but you can FOB with it) seems great and wrong at the same time... I laugh so much with the interesting things you can just pick up and use

Scarab Sages

Master of Many Styles, if ONLY because you can duel a 5th level two-handed weapon fighter and auto-win thanks to crane style.

Seriously, though, the Style feats are amazingly fun, and really let you create some interesting playstyles.

I also thoroughly enjoy the Martial Artist, Sensei, and Empty Hand archetypes.

A Couple of questions. Can a person take more than one archtype? I have one fellow playing a Monk of Four Winds and Style Master but I didn't think it was possible to play with two Archetypes. A Thing he likes to do is grapple a opponent and use his Elemental fist Ability (Lightning) and shock his victims to death in a grapple.

Fun for a 1 level dip, when you use an improvised weapon your opponent is flat footed, so dipping 1 level of Rogue to get the +1d6 SA damage is just lots of fun :)

Dumb Fighter: Did you just smack that guy with a feather quill??

Monk : yes

DF: But you caved his skull in!

Monk : The pen is mightier than the sword, it has been written.

As long as they don't replace the same class features it is fine.

Zen Archer: Likewise. Solved many problems in one archetype: you can full-round attack almost whenever and your attacks are based off of wisdom. So you can use your deadliest combat ability more often and you reduce the MAD-ness of the monk.

Master of Many Styles: I really want to like it BUT in actuality, I find it a horrible trade. In a sense, it's like trading a combat style that adds on the two-weapon fighting feat tree and 5 weapon focus for something that lets you combine styles. Whoopee. If the Master of Many Styles supplied more feats (it's extremely feat starved) it might be worthwhile. As is, it's kind of a sad class. Maybe as a 2 level dip? Otherwise, just settle for one style with another awesome monk archetype.

...OR...

Makeshift Master of Many Styles: Take Crane Style and Boar Style, for example, as well as the Combat Style Master feat. Fight defensively during your turn while using Boar Style. When your turn is over, use a free action to switch to Crane Style. You'll gain the Boar Style benefits during your turn and the Crane Style benefits during everyone else's turn. W00t.
