Overrun?

Rules Questions

OK my hafling cavalier is now 4 the level and is riding a boar. I took imp. Overrun as one of Bacon's feats. Can someone go over how it works and how to use it in mounted charges. Maybe walk through a few different scenarios . Not sure why I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around this feat.

Thank

Sir Kevin

Lost my train of thought when I saw that your boar was named Bacon.

Standard Charge:

You (Point A) ---> Clear line ---> Target (Point B)
As long as the distance between you and your target is within your charge range and there are no obstructions, you can charge.

Overrun Charge:
You (Point A) ---> Dumb goblin ---> Target (Point B)
If there is some poor goblin standing between you and your intended charge target, you normally couldn't charge to Point B. But with Overrun you can make a combat maneuver to knock the dumb goblin out of the way and continue on to your intended target (Point B). Normally, this would provoke an AoO from the goblin, but since you have Improved Overrun there is no AoO and you get a +2 on the CMB roll.

Although I can't find it in the text, I believe that if you fail your Overrun attack roll your charge stops at the target you attempted to overrun. Otherwise you plow through the dumb goblin and go spear the guy at Point B.

What happens to dumb goblin? Is he knock prone , out of the way or do I just move through his space and he stays there?

The Exchange

With Improved Overrun the dumb goblin doesn't have the option to just avoid you (i.e. let you pass through his square). If you, or rather your loyal steed Bacon, fails the combat maneuver check he stops dead in front of the goblin. If he succeeds he keeps on going. If he beats the target CMD by 5 or more he keeps going and the goblin is knocked prone too.

Note that Bacon doesn't get to attack again at the end of his charge - his attack was the overrun itself - but you do, and you gain the charge bonuses and penalties for doing so (even though he was the one charging, and you were just along for the ride, so to speak...).

I believe you are wrong about this scenario. You cannot charge Target B if a "Dumb Goblin" is in the way unless you have the Charge Through feat.

Quote:

Prerequisites: Str 13, Improved Overrun, Power Attack, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: When making a charge, you can attempt to overrun one creature in the path of the charge as a free action. If you successfully overrun that creature, you can complete the charge. If the overrun is unsuccessful, the charge ends in the space directly in front of that creature.

Normal: You must have a clear path toward the target of your charge.

The rulebook says, "You can overrun as part of a charge" - which makes it sound like you can do what "Charge Through" does without the feat. But what it really means is that you can overrun the target of a charge.

Without Charge Through, you can attempt to overrun the "Dumb Goblin" and get the bonuses/penalties for said charge to the overrun attempt. If you fail, you stop in front of the Goblin. If you succeed, you continue past the Goblin up to your movement limit.

With Charge Through, you can attempt to overrun (With bonuses/penalties from charging?) the Goblin, and if you succeed you can continue to the Target (Point B) and either attack (per normal charge), bull rush or overrun Target (Point B).

Right - but in the case of the OP it's Bacon who's doing the charge / overrrun, and Sir Kevin who is making an attack at the end of that charge.

Thanks I think I got a good handle on it now .
