I just can't get over the fact that some of the new faction Leaders look almost like undead and their pictures are completely unrelateable to me. Pathfinder art is usually top notch and I've seen so many wonderful profile pics for various NPC and therefore just cant understand what happened??
These people are supposed to be crucially important for whole PFS!
Only one I realy like is Ambrus - one look at him is enough to create a powerful first impression but the rest are plain underwhelming.
Torch is ok and Guaril is sleazy enough but still..
Only way to 'fix it' seems to be finding a corresponding pictures from movies or such so I'd appreciate any good ideas :D

'Tis common knowledge in Taldor that when Lady Gloriana Morilla commissions a portrait, the painter is expected to be 'creative' with the issue of her girth.
I would like to see some colourful and cartoony portraits to match these gritty and realistic pics, personally. Serious is great and all but my table's view of the factions is a bit more light hearted.

Which author made Morilla fat? No thanks, I'll take the Morilla depicted in her portraits. The scheming, manipulative, intelligent, seductive Morilla, not the Morilla who just got off the couch after eating too many doritos.
I have no problem with any of the portraits, I think they reflect the faction. If you have a problem with the portrait, maybe you'd have a problem with the faction as well.
Maybe you could be more specific on which portraits bother you and why.

From the descriptions of her and of Taldans, off the top of my head I envision someone with a figure like Salma Hayek
+1.
I don't know why people assume that a full figure = fat. I for one embrace and welcome full-figure women as NPCs.
Ruben got it right. (Some 17th century nudity). That man should win awards... Like a Nobel prize for awesome!

Actually, the term full figured does mean fat.
1. Full figured: A politically correct term for "fat".
She wanted to set me up with her friend who she called "full figured". I said no thanks.

I concur with the original post. Many of the faction leaders look like identical twins, and they're mostly looking down their noses at the PCs. The sketches are rough and ill-colored.
I'm not sure who the artist for them is, and I regret criticising their work without know the details of the order they were given. But I'm hoping we can find better replacements eventually.

It's Ryan Portilla, and he is an awesome artist ordinarily. I agree that there's a lot of similarity between Taldor and Qadira (I don't think that dude even looks Qadiran) I have a better profile pic for Qadira! Faction Leader?
In First Steps, Gloriana is not described as being a hottie. Though it'd be great if she was! She's meant to be a fashionable Taldane, after all.

I did. It was an attempt to directly address the concerns of all those who criticize (often legitimately) fantasy games for proliferating unrealistic female body images and oversexualization. It seemed to me that a spymaster wouldn't need to resort to seduction when she has much less crass ways of getting what she wants. And as a noble from Taldor, she would likely be anything but malnourished and likely rarely get exercise, as she would have servants to plow the fields, lift heavy rocks, and walk to the market to buy groceries. Sadly, the art didn't match my vision of her; thus is life.

If you'd rather not receive your faction missions from Salma Hayek, I guess I can't really stop you...
Oh come on, Salma isn't full figured. She's not even voluptuous (like Kim Karashian). She looks pretty thin to me.
So, Morilla is porchetta...
You have a point, she doesn't *need* to be attractive, but it kind of makes sense to me that she'd be attractive. I'd imagine attractive (intelligent) nobles would do better than unattractive nobles, unless they were born into power.
Don't make Torch more attractive! :)

Ambrus Valsin's picture was done way back when Seeker of Secrets came out. That's why he looks so remarkably different. I am not a huge fan of the current art of the Faction leaders. From the looks of it, Lady Morilla puts on full plate and turns her head facing forward to become Silver Crusade's FL. Little known fact, she also has the same father as Lantern Lodge FL, that's why the pose the same and have similar features.
/Just get Seeker of Secrets artist back.
//Sorry to current artist, I just feel like the current photos were rushed and didn't give FL portraits enough personal flavor.

I never thought I'd run into, on the PFS boards, the formation of a discussion about comparing Kim Kardashian's and Salma Hayek's body measurements.
Life is full of surprises.

I vehemently disagree with your argument that a full-figured woman can't be scheming, manipulative, intelligent, and seductive.
Or are you saying that a fat woman equals naive, stupid, and unattractive?
Seriously.

Both can have those traits, but I have a picture in my head of the political mastermind, and it's not of a non-active non-attractive fat lady.
My impression is different than Mark's too, which is fine, I just don't see her that way. You see it differently and that's fine too. We just have different opinions.

Shadowcat, I find these pictures to be good references to the faction leaders.
*copies pictures and uses them in the future*
Find me more!
:D working on it
oh, I found the same but coloured pic of Gregory Peck that looks even nicer for Major Colson: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/102/9/d/gregory_peck___colorized_by_ northone-d3dth48.jpg
Atm I'm prepping First Steps II for PFS so I'll be trying to figure out Amara Li next. In the end I'll compile them all in one post (hopefully)
if anyone else has ideas, please share ;)
EDIT: possible Amara Li http://horpic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/chinese_actress_Hao_Lei_1.jpg OR http://images.mylot.com/userImages/images/postphotos/2102502.jpg

My only real issue with the art is that most of the new art look too similar. I know every artist has a style, and faces are often the same, but the faction portraits all looking similar and looking down at you does not help at all.

Or...
This connection has got me a little bit worried about the level of stress VC Valsin is feeling up there at the top. I hope he doesn't end up buying any pistols or muskets any time soon.
Also, for anyone who's seen the British comedy Submarine, I present to you, the teenage version of the Paracountess:

OK, what I got so far:
Lantern Lodge -Amara Li
Andoran -Major Colson
Cheliax -Paracountess Zarta
Quadira - Prince Aaquir
Taldor - Lady Gloriana
Silver Crusade - Ollystra Zadrian
Shadow Lodge -
Grandmaster Torch :D
I am still missing Osirion & Sczarni candidates.

Still thinking about Lantern (changed it)
Hopefully, no infringment is made :D and I crammed all the pics into my Picassa album, in case links get broken or something

Current Sczarni leader's artwork depicts a complete sleazebag you wouldn't trust to give you directions across the street. A real rogue should be considerably more dashing (because that's how they get away with the most outrageous nonsense), not just a thug.
- - - -
Osirion? Main problem with this faction is that it's just too boring. Not menacing enough at all.
Fix: Rewrite the whole thing. You don't choose Osirion; Osirion chooses you. Obey, insect.
Special: All new PCs, at the beginning of their first adventure, roll a d10; if it's a 1, they are contacted by Osirion agents with an offer they cannot refuse -- they become Osirion faction, or else.
To leave the Osirion faction, make three DC15 saving throws, one against each type of save, and made without buff, temporary class ability or equipment bonuses. If you fail any, you are assassinated by one means or another (hope you saved up for Raise Dead). If you succeed, Osirion loses interest in you (it amuses itself punishing its assassins for their incompetence) -- after all, you were just an insect.
|
Wow... Johnny Depp? What are we, 16-year-old girls?
This is the only Sczarni captain Guaril for me: Heyyyyy...
Or maybe... Heyyyyyy...
Shadowcat, I love your pics, my only beef is that they're all so very pretty. Even Torch! I don't think Absalom has that much make-up. I can see Amara and Zarta being gorgeous, but the rest of 'em have been picked for their brains, not their charisma.
|
Heh, I can understand why you took Olmos as Torch. They both have a raspy voice. Then again I'm not all that into using Olmos' picture as Torch, as he's a bit too well known (at least for me). :P
Nice pics, keep 'em coming!
Edit: Found one I think suits Guaril Karela, the faction leader of Sczarni.

I like this thread. The only one I really have issues with is Grandmaster torch. the way he's been described matches this guy very well: Shishio Makoto

Psh! Shishio! A man in a bathtub cannot have Samurai levels. It breaks their code of conduct! And he's still too pretty.
Nay, I say. The only Torch for me is Emil from Robocop 1.
Link appears to be broken... but I'd buy that for a dollar!
then again, I dunno that Emil would really fit... he's more mutated and melting than burned. Emil

Just because I'm still convinced that Christina Hendricks is just too damned hot to be Gloriana, I found some other celebrities that could fill the role. And no, they're not from Robocop.
And yes, most of them are models. Baby steps people! Baby steps!
Plus-sized fashion model Tara Laughton took the Fashionable trait.
Plus-sized model Johanna Dray will slip Oil of Taggit into your teacakes.
