Magus casting spells

Rules Questions

when you channel a spell through your weapon (spellstrike) or attack with weapon and cast a spell (spell combat) you provoke attacks of opportunity?

Dark Archive

casting the spell provokes as normal. so cast defensively.

That.

Casting a spell usually provokes, attacking through spellstrike usually doesn't.

The attack doesnt provoke, casting the spell does. So if you are using the spell strike ability, whenever you cast the spell to be channeled through your weapon you provoke an attack of opportunity.

Liberty's Edge

Spell Combat is like Two Weapon Fighting, -2 to all attacks + cast a spell (cast defensively to avoid the Attack of Opportunity).

Spellstrike lets you channel a touch spell through your weapon to take advantage of a higher critical range.

Now, to minimize the chances of failing to cast a spell, I would suggest taking the Lunge Feat. So you can cast your spell safely out of range, and then use the reach to make your attacks. Sure you get -2 to AC, but if you have a healer on hand or a healing wand you can mitigate any backlash. There is also another feat that eliminates the AC penalty, so that is something to consider.
