Kyrademon:
hey, don't know if you saw, but i did reply to Shalelu :) also... good morning! hope this morning was better than yesterday morning!

Male Human (Ulfen) Oracle of Battle 10

DS9 is head and shoulders above other Trek series. B5 is far more sophisticated in many ways (can't beat a pre-planned epic 5-season story arc, even though they didn't get to pull it through the way it was planned), but suffers from a slow and dry start. The first two seasons are hardly watchable from the present-day point of view.

I think the sci-fi space drama series I most consistently enjoyed was Farscape. Had some trouble getting its bearings the first season, then pretty much took off and never looked back.

The Battlestar Galactica revamp got close to getting up there for me for a while, but it crashed and burned SO hard at the end that it actually made me enjoy what came before it less, retroactively.

But for Star Trek, my biggest fondness still remains for the original series, although that may simply be me showing my age, as I still watch it through the lens of me-as-a-child.

I can see its merit, but I didn't care much for its "freaky" flavor. The visual style was also very unconventional, more theater than TV, really.

Yeah, tell me about it... worst final resolution in the history of TV ever. Pass the mind bleach, please. I would have preferred a simple, "OK, we admit we screwed up. Pretend there is a sensible explanation. We should have thought of making one up earlier, frankly."

My favorite resolution would have been...

Spoiler:
The "humans" in the series are actually just a different model of cylon, which would have explained e.g. Starbuck's resurrection. Would have served those "but they're just machines" bigots just right.

I sometimes found the series hard to watch, though, mainly because of its unflinching focus on the worst sides of humanity. It's rather similar to the Song of Ice and Fire in that respect. In both cases, that's also what makes it good.

I once heard Farscape described as "the adventures of an American lost in the Australian BDSM underground." And... yeah.

It's also awesome.

I'll echo what Hrunndalf said re: B5, with the addition that the fifth season is pretty unwatchable as well. Seasons 3 and 4 though, are some of the best SF TV out there.

My favorite BSG explanation was that the cylons were a sexually transmitted disease. But yeah. That finale was... just awful. In retrospect, you could go back and see precisely when the wheels came off, but even as I was watching the show crash and burn, I never thought it would reach the depths that it managed.

Male Human Gunslinger / 3

I never got into farscape. I also thought it was just a bit too bizarre. It was good, just not my thing. I watched DS9 when it first came out, it wasn't bad but It just didn't get me where i wanted to be. Maybe because I was so used to Star Trek shows that went some place new each episode. I have heard that it got better as the series went on so I think I'll give it another shot. Voyager kinda sucks. I HATE the Captain, both the character and the actress who plays her.

Babylon 5 did start a bit slow but turned out great.

Best Star Trek was Enterprise. Loved it. It had a few rough patches but I liked the idea and the characters.

As for laser caltrops, I might actually have some ideas on how to do that. I'm going to need to get a feat or two, access to a true arcane spell caster. Sorry Mel, I need a wizard or Sorc who isn't trying to be a monk :P I'm thinking masterwork caltrops, with an alarm spell on them that triggers a ray of disintegration. Oh did I mention I'll be an absolutely stupid amount of gold?

Liothonae:
That had been the dream, but work stuff kept interfering. Then, I owed Kyrademon some notable ooc time on Hrithik's formulary, which consumed almost all available time Fri night. Working already now, and most of the day today until very late (new hires take a lot of extra work time for me). After closing tonight, I open tomorrow, so very, very little here-time today (checking this thread, just now, has been the entirety of Break #1, and I'm not even weighing in on the fog raid yet)..

Sunday afternoon to evening, system time, should be my next real window. If Alchemy Lab scene is enterable, I'll probably have Hrithik do so ... looks like it started right during dinner, so I can see Hrithik coming off scouting, grabbing some food, and going directly to formulae comprehending and potion-making, encountering those in the wagon.

I understand. I used to work those kind of hours. I'm really rather glad for my shiny 8-5. I still owe Ry that equipment list... I really need to get on that. Suppose I should do it now ;) In game terms, the Alchemy Lab scene is perfectly enter-able. Bringing food into the scene, however, is at your own risk. ;) I'm off today and tomorrow, so Sunday forum time is quite doable for me. Have a good rest of day at work, and a good night! :)

And now for a morally ambiguous interlude...

Farscape: swoon... Claudia Black... pretty hot in an unconventional way.
also, in my opinion a nice and fun addition to Star Gate SG1. Of course, I'm one of those people that actually liked Stargate Universe.

I really liked the Star Trek movie that recently came out.

<3'd BSG, ...missed the ending due to too much work/school/life stuff, and don't think I'm going to make the effort of watching it, so as not to ruin my enjoyment of the show.

My husband really liked RedDwarf, that show just made me want to hurt people, i couldn't sit through it.

I much prefer Torchwood and Dr. Who. Not really space shows, I know, I know... but I did say morally ambiguous. Oh, and I recently watched the first 2 seasons of Misfits...

Tollin - maybe I can put runes on the caltrops? I don't know if that could work... if that's a rune appropriate surface, it could be cool ;)

Male Human Gunslinger / 3

OMG!!! I think Mel and Myr may have poisoned me last night with curry house. Felt fine when I went to bed, woke up feeling a little odd, the threw up at work. Now I'm home and feeling like slightly warmed over death :(

Kinda feel bad for all the people that wanted to go diving today but can't now.

Going to crawl back into bed. I'll do some reading and posting on the in character board when I wake back up later.

I never thought I'd be glad for turning down Curry House for dinner... :( I'm sorry Tollin!!! Next time we'll get Golden Duck, or maybe Greek Corner or I'll cook or something. Hope you feel better soon!

Human Ranger

Sorry, Tollin. Rest of us feel fine. Well, massive headache, but definitely not sick. Hope you feel better soon.

I liked BSG far deeper into Season 4 than most people, but the finale left me cold.

BSG Spoilers:
In my personal universe, the finale ends when the Galactica flies over the moon and on toward Earth, the ragtag fleet jumping in to meet it. The entire when of it (past, future, right now?) is much better when left vague, and the bizarre wrap-ups, and the silly coda, didn't happen as far as I am concerned. I can deal with the finale on that basis, and just accept some plot issues and relationships as unresolved.

Danke :-)

If anyone ever has the chance to play the BSG boardgame by Fantasy Flight Games, by the by, I heartily endorse it. Pegasus expansion is meh, but Exodus expansion is top notch. Core game simply rocks, though five players is ideal. Basically a "desperate human survival" co-op game, with a traitor element: some of you are, perhaps unknowingly, actually Cylons.

And I don't think we need to sucker him... also, we'll have a Gerald!

I am fairly certain that I died yesterday. Not yet sure how I feel about being one of the undead. Or maybe I was brought back to life to fulfill some unknown destiny. I had already planed to take over the world so that can't be it. Maybe I'm supposed to invent a newer cooler form of play-dough.

I am happy to announce that Tollin is in fact, not undead. :P

Also, there are cupcakes.

You lovable nuts.

Human Ranger

They had chocolate chips. And sprinkles. And Duncan Hines frosting. Hmmmm!Only nuts was us though, unless I'z missed some. ;) Thank you, Lio!

So, I'm gonna say my tentative attempt to introduce nonlinear time into this game was NOT successful.

I was hoping it would free people up to just go do things without worrying about when it was happening. Instead, it collapsed everything into a jello-like mass.

I think what's going on is that the use of flexible time requires some kind of framework structure on which to hang things as a starting point.

Well ... we try things. Sometimes they even work. Not this time.

Starting with the arrival Kopparberget, I will go back to tracking with linear time, rather than by significant event.

i didn't even use my own recipe to make it from scratch like i normally would have... i... i... i, used a boxed mix! and then i bought frosting. all in the name of getting cupcakes to come out right, of course i sort of fiddled with it, added things and stuff. but still... i don't know how you guys will ever forgive me for not making a proper cake, i suppose i'll just have to make one at some point.

Yep. The box is the devil.

I make cakes from scratch, like, i throw flour and stuff together... and 2 hours later, voila.. cake! i draw the line at milling my own flour, but that's mostly lack of time, not lack of wanting to go chill out by a windmill and play with a giant grinding stone. now that would be cool!

i've got tons of cake recipes. though i normally default to 3 or so that are my favorite. i'd make the black forest cherry torte for the gamers, but Myri hates cherries, so that's only a win for me. (i even whip the cream for that one! and now everyone knows how much of a cooking nerd i am... ah well) i also really dig this red wine spice cake, but it's super time intensive and requires me to heat up red wine with spices and steep... so normally it's my chocolate vanilla marble cake that gets brought to game, that one I can whip up in about an hour and a half. though i haven't made one in months. i think it's overdue.

You want to talk about cooking that sounds dirty? I tried to whip it to soft peak by hand once, and failed. Now I use mechanical assistance.

Male Halfling Cavalier 10

All this talk of cake makes me think two things:

1) I need to poke my California friends into doing another one of our Meatfests. (Meatfest is a four-day long BBQ thing. Lio and Mel and Kyrademon can look at the photos on my Facebook page for a feel for it). We haven't done one in a couple of years.

2) Since part of the Meatfest experience is the desserts--such as lemon-lime mini tarts, and Better Than Sex Cake--we need to invite this group of players. At least Lio. Chuck, the one who puts together the menu and does most of the cooking/grilling/smoking, also does most everything from scratch. So Lio would fit in well.

it depends on my mood, i can do it either way, though the first takes a lot longer, and requires an exceptionally degreased stainless steel bowl, in my experience. if i'm in a bad mood, whipping cream by hand is a great way to throw off excess anger that doesn't involve me committing violence on anyone i know ;) if i'm in a hurry, and sadly i almost always am now a days, i use my little black and decker hand mixer.

Traditionally we've done Meatfest as a July 4th thing. But we've been discussing having it in Tucson, which means we'd do it March-ish.

If I can get some traction on this, I'll definitely include all y'all on the invite list.

See, we're dealing with wide-spread differences in people's temperature tolerances. You tropical living folk, like us desert dwellers, get cold easy. But some of the Meatfest eaters live in Seattle and complain about the heat if it gets over 75F. I put on a jacket when it drops below 70F.

Late March is when it stops being cold. Between late March and mid-April is the sweet spot for Tucson temperature, for those not acclimated.

Winters here get super cold! Well, ok, it doesn't snow, per se, in Honolulu, but still 60-70 is terribly cold when it's 85 the rest of the year. Though the coldest I've been has been at Mel's mom's place on the Big Island, (in Volcano at several thousand feet.) I slept with an electric blanket. I never left the side of the fireplace. I was cold! Of course, I'm planning on going again this year! Maybe there will be snow on top of the mountain again. Though last time it was closed due to crazy wind and stuff. Oh, and there was mochi pounding! You haven't lived if you haven't drank hot sake at sunrise and pounded steaming hot balls of rice into mochi dough around a concrete giant bowl thing with enormous mallets and other people, most of whom do not make it through the first hour sober. so fun!

That noise? Was my disbelief falling to the floor.

This talk of inviting people to things makes me realize that I have been remiss. You are all invited (once we get those pesky matter transport problems worked out) to the annual bad movie award show that we put on out here (along with Unhealthy Snacks and Drinks Of Colors Not Found In Nature). We run the same show four different times in four different places because we don't know what "annual" means. It happens in the spring (Lio, it will be too cold for you).

Every five years we do a contest of "champions," and we run that twice - once in the fall (Lio, it is already too cold for you), and once at Origins.

All are invited, and it's generally tradition for me to invite people who I know cannot attend. So ... come on over!

Heh, last time I was in Germany in August, it was too cold for me. :P I think it hovered around 78-80 degrees for the majority of the time I was there. Well, it was warmer in the day, but at night it was quite chilly.

That's needlessly cruel. We've got Sequelmala and Cagemala coming up over here, and now that the dust has settled about the Transformers 2 debate, we can finally watch that one.

And on a side note... it's a little sad when the born and bred Angeleno has better tolerance for the cold :)

Nah, Lio's just very cold intolerant.

Of course, the people who are able to run around in Boston in pants, tanktop and slippers are just insane and deserve to be treated as such.

Additions to the Caravan can be made at Kopparberget.

The Caravan fund currently stands at 1370.6 gp. Voluntary contributions can of course also be made to the Caravan fund.

You can add up to two additional wagons to the Caravan (and of course buy any additional upgrades you qualify for, such as reinforcements).

Two new members will join the group as soon as you purchase at least one more wagon -- Zaiobe and Silmemir. I will check to see what Caravan functions they are capable of performing.

Zaiobe and Silmemir can currently function as Guards. (Both may be able to eventually fill other functions depending on in-game developments.)

And please subtract one set of Repair Materials for the repairs Tollin will make in Kopparberget.
