Hello all, I've been thinking of starting a pbp 7th Sea campaign and I'm trying to gauge interest in such a thing before I commit to setting up storylines for it. I would prefer players who have experience with the game or have at least read the book since I do not want to keep taking time-outs during the game to explain relevant bits of the world to them.

Ahh, gotcha. Different gaming system. That's the part I didn't get. Well, if you ever need replacement players for your pathfinder seagoiing game let me know. I've always wanted to play a ships mage. ;-)

How about the points for character creation, were you thinking the full 100 points or a variation of more or less?
Will you include the swordmanschools from the Swordmansguild? I'm particular to Durchsetzungburg myself.
For simplicity, I would assume we won't be allowed to spend points on any companion trait like the Vendel bought man or such?

1 - Haven't decided yet on points
2 - yes3 - correct, no companion traits

I've had a character in my head for a while now: he's a Vodacce noble from the Mondavi family, trained in the Ambrogia fighting style and up until recently, living abroad in Paix. He has been helping to sneak fate witches out of Vodacce for months, but after nearly being caught, he has fled in hopes of drawing attention away from himself. I originally imagined him with ties to the Knights of the Rose and Cross, but later in my conception I wondered about Sophia's Daughters. He wouldn't need to be tied to a secret society, but the option would be there for a few of them.
Additionally, because the Mondavi's grain trade is very stable, my character would harbor little enmity towards the Vendel League (I mention this because BoggBear expressed some possible interest in a Vendel character).
I've a Montaigne character that excites me as well, but he is irrevocably intertwined with the Invisible College, so I'll not put him forward unless it looks like the game might go that direction.
I'm also totally open to tailoring a character to whatever nation or secret society is pivotal to your storyline. I love 7th Sea and any particular prompt will set me to thinking about dozens of prospective characters. Despite the Vodacce nobleman I've outlined above, I must admit that I've always been curious about a Vago campaign...

If I were to rate them, I would say it goes like this:
1: Occupied Castile.
2: Vodacce
3: Avalon.
But that's just me, I would be fine with whatever.
Can I make a point however? In my groups we sometimes have problems with languages. I'd say it would be a good idea to have all characters share at least one language, possibly the language of the country we are in.

I've never had that problem. It's only common sense that there be a shared language.

Currently I have two spots reserved with a potential third. I would like a party size of about six, so I'm looking for another three to four players.
I hope to find enough by the end of this weekend and then we can move to a discussion thread for character concepts and linking of backgrounds. After that, the actual game can begin.

An overview that I've taken off of wikipedia about 7th Sea -
In 2000, 7th Sea won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Game of 1999.[1] The card game was discontinued in 2005, and the role-playing game subsequently went out of print.[citation needed]

[edit] Setting
Main article: Théah
The 7th Sea RPG is set in a world that draws direct influence from the literature of 17th century Europe. Each country in the world can be compared to a European kingdom but is an exaggerated representation. Sorcery is a large part of the world with many types available to players. The dominant religion in the world, the belief in Theus and his prophets, is based on a form of Gnostic Christianity and features a parallel of the Spanish Inquisition. There are also references to the Knights Templars, Masons and the Invisible College of scientists.
All major European powers have their representations in Théah. Avalon (England), Castille (Spain), Montaigne (France), Eisen (Germany), Ussura (Russia), Vendel/Vestenmanavnjar (Netherlands / Viking) and Vodacce (Italy) are the main cultures of the game. There is also Inismore (Ireland), Highland Marches (Scotland), the Crescent Empire (Ottoman / Arab), Midnight Archipelago (Caribbean and North Africa) and the secretive Cathay (China / Korea / Tibet).
Consider yourself under consideration :)

Actually, seeing the options listed, I'm going to have to agree with BoggBear:
1. Occupied Castille
2. Vodacce
3. Avalon
Vodacce is a close second for me, and might pull ahead in a heavily political game, but I've spent virtually no time in occupied Castille as a GM or player and that's sounding really appealing.

I'd love to get in on a 7th Sea game. Never played before but have read (and own) the core book and nation guides. Read them several times actually, I just can't get enough of the setting.
I'll have to think about the character I'd like to play...so many ideas floating around right now.
As far as the setting suggestions, I'd pick Montaigne > Castille > Avalon > Vodacce, but any of them would be great.

The game will be set in Vodacce. You may go ahead and post any concepts you may have for a character. Later tonight I will be making up the discussion list for the game.
Luciano Mondavi is the Vodacce nobleman I discussed above. I would remove him from Paix, however, and base him in Chiarisa.
I remember reading about the Mondavi being frequently ignored in the Great Game because of the family's importance in providing food for Vodacce. Luciano would take advantage of that, foolish though it may be to jeopardize Mondavi neutrality.
Luciano imagines himself to be chivalrous; he is polite to his courtesans and has publicly refused to take a fate witch as his bride, criticizing the prevalence of the practice in Vodacce society. Much of that is a combination of delusion and facade, however, as he exhibits the same chauvinism characteristic of most Vodacce men. He has helped fate witches escape and justifies it as benevolence, but he is equally pleased when such action hurts his rivals.
Luciano is a romantic at heart, however, and dreams of the day he will find true love. When he wears the lover's smile, he is at his warmest...and his most vulnerable.

My character would be a man in search for meaning.
He is a vendel true, but not one who has completely severed his ties to the old ways. He seeks to find a way to bridge the gap between Vendel and Vesten without further bloodshed.
As a sorcerer of the old ways, his hope is to rise to the status of master Skajern, proof positive that Vendel and Vesten are still one people, divided only by things that means little.
As such, he is driven individual, but one who is still remarkably affable and friendly. He is also someone who has a way to see the positive things in life at all times.
He is not someone who considers himself a hero, rather he tries to do good when he can, and enjoy life as much as possible during his quest.
The reason behind this may well be that he has no idea how to accomplish it.

I'm still playing around with my concept, so I'll mention the things I'm definitely interested in, and the things I'm still considering (but which are easy to change if they conflict with other people).
I'm envisioning a somewhat-disgraced priest. (Think demoted and given a lousy assignment, rather than outright defrocked.) He'd gotten dragged into the great game through family ties, and then blew an important mission by falling in love with the wrong person (offending, of course, both his family and his superiors in the church).
I'd originally conceived the character as a Vodacce, but if we're actually in Vodacce it may make more sense to be exiled from somewhere else. (Some small tweaks to the backstory would be necessary.) I figure I'll make that call when I have a better idea what countries other people are from.
In terms of party role, I'm thinking a mix of scholarly and spy skills, and perhaps (depending on what direction we decide we want the game to go in) some basic self-defense. I don't feel strongly about any of that, so I'll be flexible about stepping on roles anyone else wants.

Not completely set yet, either. Was thinking something in the vein of noble-born fencer, who could have been very successful both in court and fencing room, if only he could put his mind to something. He easily makes friends and neglects them the next week. Makes enemies and does not care to guard himself. Always at the heart of some scandal or such. Searching for a meaning to his life. And at the rate he goes through friends, enemies and lovers he'd better find it soon or one of the three will end his search permanently.
Love Vodacce and games of intrigue.
