Visit to Kaer Maga after HMM - Therassic Spire?

Rise of the Runelords

My group heard of Kaer Maga and decided to visit this awesome location. We finished HMM at this point. I have several questions:

It's deep winter. The group wants to travel from Turtleback Ferry to Kaer Maga. That shouldn`t be easy... I thought about throwing in a werewolf / worg attack in Ashwood. Any other, perhaps more creative, ideas?

My main question however is what kind of information can be aquired from the library in the Therassic spire.

Certainly information about the Runelords, the Sihedron rune, Sin Magic, the Fall of Thassilon. What about the Runeforge? The location of the Runeforge / Xin-Shalast? That information normally becomes available only much later in the AP. Do you think it would be very harmful to the campaign if the PCs aquired it at this point ( assuming good Knowledge rolls while studying the library)? Btw. what kind of bonus to the Knowledge rolls should the library grant? Would +5 or +10 be appropriate? What kind of entrance fee would you ask for the Therassic Spire in your campaign?

If I had thought to read more in depth about Kaer Maga and/or Fortress of the Stone Giants I would have dropped hints about:

Spoiler:
The scroll that the Black Monk holds and protects. If you have any monks in the party, it would definitely be something of interest. I might drop hints as to the possibility of the idea of the runeforge, but it should be an inference, something that not directly outlined.

Spoiler:
Hm, I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the scrolls the black monk carries. I mean, a bunch of stan dard spells and the pw to the library. I think in the scrolls could be something much much cooler and meaningfuller for the campaign.

Just wanted to pop in and say how happy I am that folks are visiting Kaer Maga and the Therassic Spire. :D

Check out the Pathfinder module, Godsmouth Heresy. I ran is as a side adventure for CoTCT, during History of Ashes while my group was traveling to the Cinderlands. It fits in well if your planning on the group stopping in Kaer Maga and also drops some subtle info on the Runelords.

Ok, thats nice to hear, since I ordered that module recently and it should be on its way. I suspect I will have to modify it heavily for a 8th/9th lvl group though.

James,
I read City of Strangers for a second time yesterday and today, and I think its awesome. You made such an evocative and unique place out of it, one could run entire campaigns there.

There really should be a "Kaer Maga - The Boxed Set", with loads of maps, booklets and handouts.

Actually, I was planning to have them include much better secrets, but my group bypassed the whole thing altogether... so I didn't even have to use it. Of course I am running much higher fantasy than I would normally play. My players seem to like it, so I must be doing something right!

Yeah, I had my group take a detour to Kaer Maga after Hook Mountain. Needless to say, that place freaked them out! From the Gargoyles to the Troll Augurs... along with a certain Vampire! I had so much fun with Kaer Maga!

Thanks James!

Resurrecting the thread!

My group is just about to start Runelords and I'm already looking for ways to incorporate Kaer Maga as I think my players will like it. Has anybody else else used the city in their Runelords campaign in the 5 years since this thread started? Where in the story did you use it?

I used it in CotCT, where passing it is nearly mandatory but has no description or part of the scenarios. It was definitely an interesting experience.

One part of the Shattered Star AP takes place in Kaer Maga, and provides some background on the place and its ties to Karzoug.

Really, the whole Shattered Star AP has a bunch of things you can mine if you want to enhance RotRL in some ways.. or to use as hints and foreshadowing dropped into RotRL if you plan to run Shattered Star later.

Yep, I mentioned Kaer Maga would be a good place to unload the magical ogre hooks and other Large sized equipment that they were finding, and that was enough to get them to head out to the Asylum Stone. I mostly wanted to introduce them to the place to subject them to show them the troll augurs, but I ended up also writing a whole adventure that took place there, and showcasing the weird stuff that's in the city. (You know a city is weird when a pair of male prostitutes turned Hastur worshipers can start working at subjecting the madness of the King in Yellow to the citizens, and they're not even close to being the most unusual thing going on in the city.)

Part 3 of the Shattered Star AP is the one that takes place there I believe. My players had to go there to get a couple of people resurrected. I ran them through a lightened version of that module. Having the retrieve the shard for a necromancer in exchange for resurrections.
