How to read a Runelords stat block?

Sovereign Court

Koruvus has a +1 longsword +3 (d8+5) what are the final attack roll and damage values?

Thanks S.

It should be read like this: +1 longsword (this is the weapon Koruvus is using in combat) +3 (this is his bonus to his attack roll) (d8+5) This is the damage dealt with a successful hit.

So if I understand you right the +1 is FYI only, and the +1 is already included in the +3 bonus.

The +1 is there for a couple reasons. Firstly, you'll need it if he goes up against damage reduction. Secondly, he's physically using that weapon; if the PCs use detect magic, they'll find that the longsword has a magical aura, possibly influencing their tactics and encouraging sunder or disarm attempts. Thirdly, it's good to know where the bonuses to AB and damage are coming from -- it helps you if you need to have him use a different weapon, or use a spell or ability that effects his AB/damage.

And fourthly, and from the players perspective obviously the most important one: Once they kill him, you want to know what sword the players find on him :)

Thanks all, that is very reasonable.

Wait - do they always expect to get the item? I think it's worth 2315gp (2000 for +1 300 for mw 15 for longsword)

I hope it doesn't get damaged during the fight :)

And that is why PCs almost never pick up Sunder.

Thankfully they have the option of leaving things @ 1hp.
