Am I missing something about the Gunslinger?

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 2

Liberty's Edge

Apologies if I sound an idiot - I have not paid too much attention to the new classes and the tests, but did I read right that the Gunslinger adds Dex to damage at lvl 5? Does that mean until then he adds no damage to his attacks? Essentially making the Gunslinger damage pretty insignificant for quite some time?
I could see waiting until lvl 3, but 5 seems a long wait.

He use a ranged weapon with a touch attack... Does wizards add they dex or str to their ray damage ? Or A fighter with a longbow or crossbow ?

This is pretty powerful ont it's own, it's a classe feature, no one else add dex to damage on ranged weapon... ;)

But until 5 you have no way of getting damage bonus. A fighter with the Bow is usually getting at least +3 damage log before then thanks to high Str and a composite longbow.

I admit ranged touch attack is pretty darn awesome, but until lvl 5 it is pretty wimpy.

At lvl 3, if your Wizard spent every round casting Magic Missile would you consider him pulling his weight? That doesn't need any roll at all and is doing 2d4+2, yet you would kick him up the backside and tell him to do something more useful - which the Wizard of course can do....sadly you cannot give the Gunslinger a kick up the backside to do the same as his reply is 'I can't until lvl 5!'

Add in the price of half decent ammo and I would seriously be asking if it was worth firing the gun.

Yeah and the roll is only touch for one range increment. so outside of 30 feet its full armor baby. My issue is as a fighter variant gunslinger cant multiclass fighter but also doesn't qualify for the higher weapon feats.

Also by level 5 the wizards touch spells are far more damage than a gun bullet and far cheaper to use

Well, you can use Deadly Aim.

Yeah but so can the guy with the bow. and yes the penalty hurts him more but not nearly as much as the lack of damage from a class that spends 220 times as much per shot.

This is kinda moot since the Ultimate Combat is going to come out with revised rules for the Gunslinger that aren't in the playtest and doubtless several feats designed straight for them.
