I usually DM most my groups games but I will finally get to play in the our next campaign. The party consists of a Wizard, Ranger/Rogue and a Paladin so I was thinking of rolling a Cleric as the Paladin will be the frontline meat shield. I want to make my character a bit of a melee feat specialist as well (taking feats like disarm and Improved trip). I'm not sure if I should start him as a Barbarian and then go Cleric or perhaps a Fighter to pick up the extra feat to use on Dire Flail exotic weapon proficiency.
I haven't really thought much more past this point except he hails from the a remote homestead in the River Kingdoms where he and his family would round up wild horses and sell/breed them. (If your familiar with Night's Dark Terror think of Sukiskyn). I have a few weeks before we make up the characters and I am pretty sure the DM will make us roll for stats so I can't give any details for you there.
Thanks in advance for any advice.... help me get get my brain juices flowing.

not being rude, but why Cleric?

Unless you need to be cleric to provide healing, then you might consider a cavalier. If you have a horse background being mounted might fit very well, and those teamwork feats might be some of what you are looking for.
I do like the Cavaler and it would of been my first choice but I want the Cleric for healing. The guy playing the Pally only ever plays Paladins and he isn't to fond of being the party healer. I do have an idea with what I will go with now. Fighter for 1st level and Cleric after that. It will be a slow progress campaign so I have plenty of time to develop as I go.
Holy Vindicator does look like a nice option for further down the track too.

Trip focused oracle of battle is a very good support build, esp if someone else in the party has positive energy bursting ability like the paladin does in your group. Gives you healing in battle as a free action, near-fighter level combat ability in your chosen weapon, good buffing ability, and suprising charge.
