Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I'm planning on running Carrion Crown with their being strong incentive to my players to only be human. Afterwards I'd like to lighten that up considerably and allow non-core races in.

However I'm struggling to find acceptable non-core races from a flavour perspective. I've found:

  • Tieflings - Although looked down upon, they aren't killed on sight.
  • Aasimars - Are considered a good omen.
  • Duergar - Probably rare enough they'd just be mistaken as dwarves.
  • Grippli - A peaceful race that often trades with other races.
  • Half-Elementals - These are considered exotic, but are accepted in most societies (e.g. Ifrit, Oread, etc).
  • Tengu - Considered lucky charms by sailors in the shackles. Although considered thieves (much like gypsies), they are probably permitted to exist.
  • Svirfneblin - Might be mistaken as pygmies from the Mwangi Expanse.

Are there any races I've overlooked that have "X as Characters" stats and would be allowed to move among the core races?

Looks like you haven't yet read the Carrion Crown Player's Guide. It specifically sites Changelings, Dhampir and Orcs as recommended player races for this AP.

changelings sure. They're only female so I don't anticipate many players taking it, but they're allowed. Orcs on the other hand are an awful idea. Half-orcs are going to struggle, let alone a full blooded orc. Dhampirs seem terribly overpowered.

But all this is off topic.

Why would orcs struggle? I don't see them getting any more hate than a Tiefling?

Dhampirs don't have enough going for them to negate the "can't heal with positive energy" issue. Now if they could heal with both or only take half damage from negative energy affects that would have been nice.

Extreme prejudice. That's only a half-orc.

I'm not sure why you're comparing tieflings to orcs in Ustalav as I'm not allowing tieflings as an option either. Although regardless, all this is off-topic to the original question: Are there any races I've overlooked that have "X as Characters" stats and would be allowed to move among the core races in a campaign that isn't set in Ustalav? (added a slight clarification in case the original post wasn't clear).

I too got the feeling that orcs are going to have more social problems than most character types, even more than tieflings. If nothing else, orks are more immediately recognizable and identifiable. I also go the impression that Kellids are going to get the short end of the social interaction stick in Ustalav.

Curiosity, and I did not know about the extreme predjudice thing. I will have to keep that in mind for when I run it.

Most player I can think of would find the concept of playing an orc as less appealing because of all the negatives in their initial stats (and light blindness) would make them weaker as starting out characters.

to not derail the thread:
They are really good in melee, and the orc ferocity is better than the half-orcs. They don't go unconscious when they go below 0hp. They keep on fighting, even though they still gain the staggered condition.

I did not realize that until I had to fight them as NPC's. Of course if you don't want to play a big dumb brute I would agree they are not that appealing.

I just realized that someone made an entire list of 0HD races a few weeks ago. I will see if I can find it.

Drow, Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Strix are the ones i can think of right now.

There's that shadow plane one form the Bestiary 2 as well, I can never remember the name of it though but it after the Dhamphir and before the Infrit.
