Alright, cool. Good to hear I've gotten things right in my head. I don't suppose there's a detailed map of the Stolen Lands floating around anywhere, is there? The Player's Guide only has a map of Brevoy.
Here's Adreccam's Perception Check to get a clue about the empty chair: 1d20+1. Welp, so much for that. Xanthan, you wanna give me a hand over here?
Perception check? Ok let us know if you want us to use something else Kalizar. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

I chose nobility to determine if you recognized the design work on the chair, as having connection to a particular noble household, or perception to discern other details that may not have been readily evident.
Xanthan recalls the chair had a strong draconic theme, maybe even a stylized dragon at the center of the back, very different from the other chairs arrayed around the table. He does not recall much else; it looked old, looked sturdy, looked well-worn.

Adreccam Surtova |

Assuming Xan relays the info, Adreccam has a strong suspicion that the chair's heraldry signifies House Rogarvia, the recently disappeared royal line. From what he can remember from childhood stories, Choral the Conqueror used dragons to do his conquering, as well. Adreccam isn't quite sure how he feels about this, since his father's estate lies on former Rogarvia land. If the missing Rogarvias have a stake in this venture, any Surtova will have to step extra carefully.

How about a compromise? I've been reviewing the Relationship Rules from the Jade Regent Players Guide PDF, free BTW. What if we allow Keiran and Adreccam to take on Gehen or Mij as squires? They decide if they want to form a friendly or adversarial relationship with their ward. This would be stability for the NPC, plus create roleplay opportunities to grow the dynamics of each NPC. We could do the same for Rash, Seamus, even Oleg and future NPC's. For now, as a test, I would limit this to the 4 current bandit prisoners, Rash, Seamus, Gehen, and Mij. If this works out, we could develop others later on, as the game progresses. I know 4 options would leave some of you out, but there's no reason why some NPC's couldn't have a friendly relationship with one PC, and an adversarial relationship with another. Just a thought. Input?

My apologies.
I meant to post that I was going on vacation Sunday morning, but things got hectic and I forgot to log in. I was on vacation all week without internet access. I am here now. I will read through the posts and post as appropriate before the end of the day.
Again, I apologize for not letting you know I was going to be gone.

DM Kalizar |

Ok, so I will assume Keiran will mentor Gehen while Adreccam will mentor Mij.
Gehen seems to be guarded somewhat, nervous around you, almost like a deliquent around a cop. In conversation, you learn he is sensitive about his family situation, apparent issues with being the runt of the litter. He does seem to express an interest in armor, feeling his own leathers are 'worthless'. For gaming purposes, a friendly approach would include "gifts" of armor or protective improvements. A competitve approach would include jabs about his "runtishness", be it size or young age. You may learn more as the game progresses. Your current Relationship Score will be 5, based upon Charisma and the Campaign Trait, Second Chance, which means basically giving a bandit a second chance.
Mij is a little hyper, and suprisingly you find your personalities are somewhat alike. In conversation, you learn Mij revels in athleticism and physical endeavors, so is sensitve whenever he feels slighted or insulted on his 'performace' or abilities. In discussing being your squire, he takes a keen interest in your talk of the Aldori dueling styles, especially the blades. He has a fascination with blades, mentioning a former parental surrogate that ran a weapons shop. For gaming purposes, a friendly approach woul include "gifts" or weaponry, blades and things with a shiny edge. A competitive approach would include jabs about his physique or physical "performance", real or imagined. You may learn more as the game progresses. Your current Relationship Score will be 3, based upon Charisma and the Capaign Trait, Second Chance, which means basically giving a bandit a second chance.

DM Kalizar |

If you truly want to befreind Seamus, talking with him results in him regaling you with stories of life in the River Kingdoms, and the joys he has found in life following the exploits of Cayden Cailean. He is sensitive when his faith is mocked or he perceives someone doubts his faith in Cayden. You find his faith is nearly as strong as his love of spirits and libations. Indeed, from his discussions of the finer points of brewing and horticulture, you'd think he was a distiller, save that his love extends more to partaking of than creating such concotions. For gaming purposes, a friendly approach would include gifts of "wine and spirits" as he seems to harbor a desire to taste of the best life has to offer, literally so. A competitive approach would include jabs or insults relating to moments of "doubt" or "wavering faith" in Cayden, moments where the Drunken Hero does not shine as clearly in Seamus as he might like. You may learn more as the game progresses. Your current Relationship Score will be 7, based upon Charisma and the Campaign Trait, Second Chance, which means basically giving a bandit a second chance.
Anyone interested in Rash?

DM Kalizar |

Rash doesn't open up easy, but in talking with him about Brevoy, you learn he is bitter over whatever it was that lead him to be driven from his home, forced into the life he is only now escaping. His past is a bitter, sore subject. He does however, enjoy it seems hunting and the wilds, as you both enjoy a moment watching two hawks in flight, taking a carefree flight and drifting on the spring breeze. For gaming purposes, a friendly approach would include gifts relating to "travel and exploration", he seems to be interested in staying moving, not really settling down for long. A competitve relationship would involve jabs or insults about how he isn't "Brevic", how he was apparently unworthy of remaining in his former homeland. Your current Relationship Score will be 4, based upon Charisma and the Campaign Trait, Second Chance, which means basically giving a bandit a second chance.
Players can let me know if they wish to form a friendly or competive/adversarial relationship with their respective NPC's. Also, to Flynn and Simondale, you can still form a relationship with one of the bandit NPC's, or perhaps Oleg or Svetlana. Flynn's interest in Svettie's sister's/her own cooking might be one avenue to explore, or not.

Is there a middle ground? Keiran doesn't necessarily want to *antagonise* the poor kid, but at the same time, he wants to make certain that he's not a "friend" at this point in time, and that if he wants that title, he will have to earn it.
Incidentally, I echo Adreccam's sentiments, thanks for the work, Kalizar and Flynn!

Is there a middle ground?
I do not yet have the Jade Regent AP, just working off the players guide, but it seems the game rules are looking at relationships as being positive "friendly" or negative "antagonistic/competitive". I think the categories are deliberately broad to allow for some very loose game styles.
I would see Keiran's approach to Gehen still being on the friendly side. The rules seem to lean towards "friendly" involving gifts of interest, whether mundane or extravagent, and praising the NPC for good interactions. The key seems to be to make the NPC consider the PC a resource/patron/ally and develop a closer bond of service or friendship.
On the other hand, offering insult or illustrating faults and criticism for poor interactions seems hallmark to the less common "antagonistic/competitive" approach. I suppose the idea is to allow a player to force an NPC to constantly strive to compete with or attempt to show up the PC; to prove themselves valuable and of worth. I think this approach will be more limited in scope and means of success, depending on specific interpersonal relationship formats. Adreccam may be able to pull this off with his squire, depending on how much Mij will mirror him, and his willingness to show up daily at the doors of the academy, as young Adreccam did.
And to all, thanks for the positive feedback. It is appreciated.

Alas, it seems I have been negligent in my duties as DM. I forgot I had switched to the Fast XP track, to balance the additional players with reduced XP opportunities. This means that each of you is now Second Level. Congratulations and thanks Flynn. I was going back over posts and caught your question, which made me double check myself. I appreciate it.
Players have the option of rolling hit points and taking the amount given, or taking the average, rounded up. Just let me know which way you want to go, and what changes you wish to make.
Also, some of you may want to go over your character sheets, make sure your skill points, etc., are listed with ranks taken. Any questions, let me know.

DM Kalizar |

Riding horses and using the Arcanis Cartographia, your band can explore and map a single hex in a full day. This allows travel from the adjacent hex, and a little time to deal with any encounters that may occur resulting from the exploration. I will make perception rolls for the band, as necessary.
Travel from Oleg's to Bokken's, without exploration, looks to take a good three hour ride, or a nearly eight hour walk.
