What's Up With Odin?

I just read "Fear Itself" #1 and I have a question. What happened that turned Odin from the guy who sent Thor to Earth to learn humility and compassion to the prick who dragged Thor back to Asgard in chains for picking defending Earth over returning to Asgard?

He's afraid. People tend to act oddly when they're afraid.

Gotcha. I did not know if that was a new thing in Fear Itself of if he had generally become like that. Othe than the D&D and Star War Legacy series, I have not picked up a comic in a long time.

I thought I had read somewhere hints that this Odin isn't the Odin we all know and love. Not sure though.

Humility and compassion are for other people to have.

I think you're right. I stopped reading Thor a little after Siege, but last time I saw Odin he was dead and had refused coming back to live so Thor could be king.

They're writing perhaps a bit more true to source material. If you read the Norse myth in depth, Odin is pretty much a jerk a lot of the time. A rationalizing jerk perhaps, but no one you should ever take a job offer from if you expect to be paid. Actually you'd even understand why Loki took the side of the Giants in Ragnarok. Loki is usually the person who bails Odin out when the latter's scheming backfires on them, and he generally gets no gratitude from the effort he makes. Loki even got himself pregnant bailing Odin out of the debacle with the building of Asgard's walls (he had taken the form of a mare to distract a stallion) and gave birth to the eight-legged steed that became Odin's principal mount.

Yeah, that's right, Odin pimped out his son to get out of a debt!

And then stole his own grandchildren to use as underaged slave. Wow, and I used to think Zeus was bad...

In his defense, it's almost always done with an eye towards delaying Ragnarok for as long as possible.
