I'm uncertain what can add to CMD? Would spells like Shield or a deflection from a Ring of Protection?

Shield spell, no. Ring of Protection, yes.

We know that CMD = 10 + Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + Dexterity modifier + special size modifier, that's the basics.

In addition, "A creature can also add any circumstance, deflection, dodge, insight, morale, profane, and sacred bonuses to AC to its CMD. Any penalties to a creature’s AC also apply to its CMD. A f lat-footed creature does not add its Dexterity bonus to its CMD."

So, shield provides, oddly enough, a shield bonus to AC, so it doesn't get added. On the other hand, so to speak, a ring of protection provides a deflection bonus to AC, so that would figure into CMD. So, that's the reason behind Bob's answers.

It isn't the official rule, but at my table we use :

CMD = Touch AC + CMB.

It's dirt simple and it works quite well.
