discuss away!

Male Half Orc Skald (War Drummer)

I think "away" is a lazy word and I hate it when I'm writing because word never catches it when I write away in stead of a way. Couldn't those of us who speak the english language found a better word then just shoving a vowel in front of an existing one?

male Human. Monk

Sorry all. Real life continues to explode. I simply do not have the time and attention it would take to do a proper job here. I feel that I am letting you down but I think it is better for me to bow out now and let you get in a replacement ASAP rather than dragging things out.

Perhaps another time. Farewell and good game.

Sorry again.
Will formerly Durant.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

aw, fair enough, thanks for the heads up

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

Have we lost Talon, too?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

i.... don't know...

Female Human Shining Knight Paladin 6

I should mention that this is my first PbP. Today I posted a reply only to find that I had been too slow and Thayalh had responded first to the captain with the same question I had. I wanted to participate so I tried to edit my post so it flowed with the conversation but I think the result is a little awkward. Do people normally just delete their post in this instance?

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

I think your post flows perfectly fine as it is now - sorry that I snuck in like that. When something like that happens like that to me I usually edit my post, or sometimes leave it as is and just have who ever reads the posts sort it out for themselves. However, I've learned to always preview my posts first to see if someone has posted while I was typing.

male Human. Monk

Um… Hi…..

Me again.

It seems the explosion was not as bad as first reported. So if there is still room I would like to rejoin.
Character is finished. Gear is a bit disorganized but everything is finalized.

Who knows what will happen in the future but things look good for the next few months.

So room on board for a wandering monk with some egg on his face?

~Will, The once, (and future?) Durant

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

yea there is still a place for you Durant, the game hasn't started fully as of yet, so yea welcome back

male Human. Monk

If I may be allowed the levity, 'WOOT!'

So Durant would have asked some questions long before we got on the boat, no matter the answers he is going but he would ask.

1) What do we know about the forces we will be facing? Mainly living? Demons and Devils? Golems?

2) Do we have a mad of the island? Doesn't matter how out of date He will want a copy.

3) Is the plan that we will be extracted from the island or are we on our own?

3a) How far away from the island is the nearest safe haven? Durant has a feather boat that can take the group and can reach anything with in 144 miles in one day's sailing. (Note: Viking longboat moves 3mph/72mi per day. The swan is twice as fast so I just doubled the range.) It is a one way trip however.

3b) Mention was made of flying vessels. Do we know/can we learn how to fly one. We may need to borrow one.

4) Can our bosses provide any resources. A scroll or two of sending or other communication device would be welcome.

5) If captured can we expect ransom or rescue.

6) What exactly is our mission? Kill everything on the island? Establish a beachhead for invasion? Any ideas on how to disrupt the church?

Will post in IC thread soon.
It's good to be back!

male Human. Monk

Beloved leader Could you take a look at Durant please. I think I did everything right but he seems to be lacking in awesome compared to the rest of the crew. I mean even the nature oracle manages a +10 attack!

Thayalh Wow!

~Durant

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

right, the island is completely unexplored, and what exactly was there ect is unknown, for all anyone knows it could be a trap. the following things you do know/have
1) the ship will anchor near by and wait for your return, the crew may go down to replenish supplies
2) you do have a map, but its very sketchy
3)the nearest known safe haven is far too far to reach on a feather boat and flying vessels are very rare
4) you weren't provided with any communication scrolls or anything like that but if captured you can expect a rescue operation
5) the mission is to find what exactly was this island so special and what happened here to give those individuals their power

ulgulanoth wrote:

Rats. But the swan might come in handy none the less.

Oops knew I forgot something. Hit points 1d8 ⇒ 51d8 ⇒ 11d8 ⇒ 51d8 ⇒ 71d8 ⇒ 8

Not too shabby.
~Durant

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

I read +10 and thought - that can't be right! I don't know what I was thinking but I'm pretty sure it's a +8. Yeah, not 10. Still, I think it's pretty impressive.

Dammed impressive.

We have a rather might crew.

The mighty wizard manages a...+1?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

indeed a mighty crew

male Human. Monk
Ansha wrote:

Well that's a +4 once we 'find' a bow. And frankly any positive attack number for a wizard qualifies as mighty.

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

As an aside, since I am on a large mount I get a +1 to hit anyone size medium or smaller since I am "on higher ground." Total = +9

male Human. Monk

sigh, Just had a pbp I was in die, mourned by all.

For you more experienced droogs does that happen often?

Hoping this stays breathing.

Yeah pbp LIVES! New GM lept into the breech.

male Human. Monk

Fearless Leader Just realized I may have misunderstood exactly what you meant in the spoiler. I would be happy to re-post if things are not as dire as I judged them to be.

~Durant

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

Do you want us to post our actions in initiative order?

male Human. Monk

ulgulanoth
...um how did we know it was a wraith? Was there a knowledge religion check I missed somwhere. From the description it could have been any one of a hundred things. Are you assuming that we have faced Wraiths before and recognise this one now?

I am rather confused.

Dark Archive

your characters don't know, sorry i should have put it in ooc, but i thought, you whanted to know what it was...

Female Human Shining Knight Paladin 6

Where are our horse and elk?

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

Speaking of which, I haven't rolled its hitpoints yet:

6d8 + 24 ⇒ (8, 1, 2, 1, 7, 6) + 24 = 49

Do we reroll 1's for mounts?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

the horse and elk are in the lower deck

and you do get to reroll 1s

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8

male Human. Monk

oops forgot to reroll that 1 on my HP.
1d8 ⇒ 2

male Human. Monk

Not that I think it will matter that much but what is the climate like in the area of the island? Are we looking at Greenland, Ireland, Crete, Zanzibar, Tonga? Things may be different on the island itself but it would be nice to know.

Also do we have a rough idea of the sise of the island?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

while you have no idea on the island's size, the climate is temperate to tropical

ulgulanoth wrote:

Oops, mask slipped. That's better.

male Human. Monk

To all
As it looks like we arte going into a multi-level fight it might be helpful to know where everybody is.

So far as I know
Durant. On main deck
Pernella. Below decks somewhere heading up.
Gurthock. Just moved onto the main deck.
Ansha. With Grthock or remaining below.
Thayalh. Somewhere below. Are you still with us Thayalh?

Missing anyone?

Ansha's following Gurthock, at the moment.

right next encounter i swear i'll make more challenging

Male Orc Expert 5
ulgulanoth wrote:

Well they were in what my group deems "fireball formation".

Gurthock was a bit surprised too.

"GET IN FORMATION THIS MA"Y BE A LONG AND ENTERTAINGING FIGHT!"

*FWOOSH*

*wiping soot and ashes from face*

"NEVER MIND!"

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

problem was that they were CR1 zombies... 1 hit and their dead

male Human. Monk

I may have become confused again. As I remember Gurthock, Ansha, and Thayalh were fighting the deadies on the main deck. I leapt into the hole the corpses punched in the hull and ended up alone in a room of unspecified function or size that held a dozen zombies. I killed 3 over the course of a full and a surprise round. Pernella then entered the same room somehow and channeled energy. This destroyed the remaining 9 zombies in that room. Thus ended round 1 below deck.
On deck Gurthock and Thayalh used weapons both spiritual and base to help thin the on deck horde. Ansha then let off a fireball, catching 4. Thus ended round 1 on deck. Apparently that was all the zombies because there were no attacks in coming on any player.
At the beginning of round 2 I move back the way I came returning to the main deck to check on the course of the fight on this level. I arrived on deck at init 24 only to find it deserted save for some wounded and one dead sailor.

So where did I go off the rails?

Female Human Shining Knight Paladin 6

Pernella was guided by detect evil and thats where it led her.

male Human. Monk
Pernella wrote:

So that's how you found the right room. Makes sense that it led you to the room rather than the deck.

just a note, the mission was never secret....

male Human. Monk
ulgulanoth wrote:

So they sent a lone ship, into enemy territory, on a mission publicly known to be an attack on that enemy, without providing any kind of cover or force protection? They could have just given the enemy the ship, it would have been cheaper.

Unless we are a feint. In which case we have drawn off the forces we can and it is still time to turn around. the other side have proved they can find and hit us when they choose. This first attack exposed them to some losses because they wanted to be sure to decapitate us and get a valuable captive to interrogate. They were successful. The next attack will be to destroy us and they now know we have no defences against an attack below the waterline. Three zompies with handaxes near the keel and any risk we represent to the enemy vanishes.

Logic argues for turning back, and Durant's LG alignment prevents him from allowing other people from throwing their lives away.

Time to turn around.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

well there where many other ships sent out, not so much a feint, many where asked to take up the call

male Human. Monk
ulgulanoth wrote:

Even more reason to turn around. We have made the best feint we can. We have drawn off some attackers and exposed a possible spy in Mr. Hawk.

In any case the enemy now knows we have no defense against an underwater attack. They can send us to the bottom at their whim. We are useless and in pointless danger here. We might be useful elsewhere.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

and 2 points there, 1) they can still do that even if you turn around and 2) that is an in game point you'll have to convince the other players with
that have to be considered, but if you all wish to go back thats fine (my games are flexible)

male Human. Monk
ulgulanoth wrote:

Cool! I am glad that I am not derailing things by putting these ideas forward.

As far as point one. If they can spare the resources then they should. A ship that disappears will create confusion back at HQ. That said As soon as we turn around we cease to be a threat. If their resources can be better used else where it would be reasonable to let us run. If we keep going foreward we remain a growing threat. One that is worth spending resources to blunt.

Now if we happen to be in/very near swan range of the island and if we happened to have a way to signal for pickup then it would be worth the risk.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

well there are many islands in this sea, most undiscovered or uncharted so you never know if you're outside swanboat range for sure of an island, just swanboat range of THE island (for now)
