Yes, I am having problems understanding how a cantrip works.
Ok, so there's a Range and a Target. But the description of the spell is confusing.
Does this spell allow ONLY the caster to cast it, choose 1 target/level, whisper to them and receive replies from them?
Or does it allow the caster and all targets chosen to have the ability to point to anyone targeted by the spell to be able to whisper and receive replies to one another?
Example, Brenier, Valdierr, and Tzedd are together. Tzedd casts Message and targets Brenier and Valdierr. Tzedd can whisper messages and receive replies from them.
Can Brenier and Valdierr whisper and reply to each other also? Or is it only between caster and target?
As I understand it, it's between caster and target. However the caster can broadcast any information he gets, allowing it between targets it won't change any game balance and to be honest, it would be annoying to broadcast the informations
The caster's walkie-talkie talks to all the others. They can only address his. He can repeat an individual's message to the others if he wants to.
Lots of people ignore that, though, and just say you can all talk to each other.

One other question about the Message spell that I've never been clear on. Do you need to point at the receipiants each time the caster whispers, or is that just at the initial casting of the spell? I've flip-flopped back and forth in my head on this a number of times in the past, so I'd like to get other opinions on it. If you do indeed need to point to whisper, that limits the spell to line-of-sight essentially, removing some of the scouting utility and such.

Only at the initial casting of the spell, and you do not need line of sight. In the description of the spell it states there only needs to be an open path between caster and target(s) which, I assume, allows the sound to travel back and forth. I wouldn't get too hung up on a cantrip, point in the general direction of target and there's your target.
