Lizard Folk Monk & Stances

Rules Discussion

Lizardfolk have some great natural weapons: Claws, Bite, Tail

How does this stack up with stances that say "leg strikes" like Dragons Tail? Or rigid fingers of Rain of Embers?

Are these just fluff and any unarmed strike is good?

Stances grant the ability to make specific unarmed strikes. So if you're in dragon stance, you could use the dragon stance stride (with its damage and traits) or one of your other unarmed strikes (with their damage and traits). You couldn't mix and match them, to get a bite with piercing damage, and the dragon stance die, or anything like that.

If you're in some other stances, like mountain stance, you can only make one type of strike, and the others are unavailable.

If the question is all about description, reflavor things how you want in the game you run.

Stances are generally better.

And you can't use any of the lizards attacks with rain of embers.

Best thing to do with the claws as a Monk is to use Dragon Tail for your first attack and take advantage of the agile claws on your second and third.

An alternative would be to use your natural attacks on an Unarmed Fighter. Fighters do get some pretty good feats that don't require you to use a weapon so it's something to consider.

Giant lizard barbarian....

If only I could get lighting breath in there somehow...

My renegade gladiator slave, Argo Eight-Eyes, has SO many different options for his strikes it can be hard to know which one to use.

I'd say that if you want to make extensive use of your lizardfolk natural weapons as a monk that you'd be better served focusing your monk class feats on non-stance options. Since lizardfolk get both Strength and Wisdom as boosts, you could do pretty well speccing into ki abilities and using those in combination with your jaws, claws, and tail.

Yeah, but I wanted lots of weapon options. This guy basically has his choice of agile, backswing, cold iron, finesse, magical, nonlethal, silver, sweep, thrown, and versatile on any given attack. He's also got all three damage types (bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing) pretty well covered to boot.

I've talked to enough martial players to know that weapon traits can actually be a pretty big deal.

(I'm not saying your suggestions aren't as good, or unwelcome, just affirming that I know what I'm doing.)
