That's what i thought also, but after checking the staves i saw that staves use the weilder's CL if it higher than the staff's.

I suspect that the creator is a wizard and not someone who has cone of cold as an early entry, if i am correct the CL should be 9 and not 8.

I get 86,400 market price from my program. So let's break it down and calculate the cost by hand.

Cone of cold (5th level spell)
Intensified lightning bolt (4th level spell)
Intensified fireball (4th level spell)
Extended acid arrow (3rd level spell)
Reach magic missile (2nd level spell)
The caster level of the staff is 9 and all of it's spells cost 1 charge to activate. So:
(5*9*400)/1=18000
(4*9*300)/1=10800
(4*9*200)/1=7200
(3*9*200)/1=5400
(2*9*200)/1=3600
SUM=45000 (crafting price), market price=90000.

Hmm, it seems that the program got something a little wrong, i have to check it.

I get the same thing by hand - 45k to craft 90k in market.

So here's the funny thing. You can actually make the staff cheaper by adding two 5th level spells at 3 charge cost to activate, because you're gaming the system on the multipliers. How silly is that?

Math:

spell - level - base cost - multiplier - charges - net cost
Cone of cold - 5 - 18000 - .5 - 1 - 9000
extended acid arrow - 3 - 10800 - .5 - 1 - 5400
intensified fireball - 4 - 14400 - .5 - 1 - 7200
intensified lightning bolt - 4 - 14400 - .5 - 1 - 7200
reach magic missile - 2 - 7200 - .5 - 1 - 3600
some other 5th level spell - 18000 - .75 - 3 - 4500
some other 5th level spell - 18000 - 1.0 - 3 - 6000

Net cost to craft - 42,900, market value 85,800.


Quick question -

Ordinarily, I can't cast a spell out of a staff unless it's in my class list, correct?

Does that mean I can't cast metamagiced spells out of staves unless I have that metamagic feat? Can you throw an intensified fireball out of a staff without knowing how to throw intensified spells?

Just looking at the numbers, it almost seems like it'd be cheaper to craft staves with metamagic properties applied to their spells than it would be to craft the metamagic rods themselves, if you knew you were only going to be applying that metamagic feat to a particular spell.

Next question - can you bypass the metamagic feat prereq by taking +5 to your crafting check?

Yes you can use a staff even if you don't have the metamagic feats.

Yes you can. Although keep in mind that when crafting the staff you don't need the metamagic feat, you just need the metamagiced spell.
