Some thoughts on Round 2

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 2

Liberty's Edge

First off, I must begin by saying I like this version of the Gunslinger better than the previous incarnation. There are some vast improvements here, not the least of them being making it a "stand-alone" class, rather than a variant Fighter. I think this is a true step in the right direction but there is still room for further improvement.

The one thing I did like in gunslinger v.1 was that the choice in Deeds made for customization of the character. With the present version, all Gunslinger gets all the same deeds at all the same level. This makes for a "cookie-cutter" class, which I am sure is not the intentions of the designers. A similar change was made from play-test to print with the Inquisitor as well when it came to Judgments.

What I would like to see is a Deeds mechanic more akin to the Rage Powers, where making a choice is important to the character and individualizes one Gunslinger from another. This would require more Deeds given through the class progression to be viable, but allows for the creation of more (and future) Deeds to be incorporated into the class, even beyond Ultimate Combat. This also means that some of the "must have" Deeds would have to be best folded into the class progression as well, as was done with the Alchemist before.

Thoughts?

the gunslinger always got all deeds as far as i am aware.

I'm pretty sure a "Cookie-Cutter" class is a Class that has Options, but everyone does the same thing because they just aren't nearly as good as anything else, like having to choose between multiple range increments for Touch AC, or the ability to fix your gun.

though as it is right now, I agree that the Gunslinger feels like every gunslinger is the same.

I stand corrected; I found this to be true on further analysis. For some reason I thought you had to choose at each level, making some of these as "must have" Deeds. Maybe it was the idea of slapping the word "Deed" on some of the feats that threw me off.

I still think that a "pick your Deeds" mechanic would be a great way to add further customization to the class though.

On an unrelated note, can anyone tell me why the Gunslinger has to wait until 19th level for a Stunning shot? This is a fairly weak ability in comparison to even theBleeding shot in my opinion, and that is given out WAY earlier.

Deeds are situational. It's agood idea let them "open access" by a level basis, as they are now.

I'm not sure that say goodbye to fighter only feats is a great improvement.
