How the heck did Square get the rights to the name of the Greek God of Time?! Fair use, man, fair use.

Ha, speaking of Greek Gods, seems I've gone all Zeus up in here.

I don't think it was settling so much as finding his true calling.

His works have been played by the London Philharmonic (or was it the NY? Some prestigious symphony in either case), he's touted as one of the best composers of the late 20 century, and he's been a rock star twice over with The Black Mages (whom I adore) and Earthbound Papas (who I think fall short of TBM, but are still good), selling out the stadium of just about every show they do.

I don't think he's complaining.

Hahah~! No, I'd imagine not - my comment was tongue-in-cheek.

1) Spelled wrong. Chrono = neither Cronos nor Krono(s). Alas.

2) It's the setting and ideas represented therein.

Kind of sucks... but I'd be okay, if they only actually did something with it. I don't think it would be "worse" than CC - just different. And, at this point, it might actually help the series. But I don't know.

I heart me some LordSynos, but, uh, VII... is not the one for anyone who has issues with visuals, I don't think.

To be clear, I enjoyed 7 immensely when it came out (I also was a little bit of a poseur/hipster with "I know FF better than you guys, 'cause I've been with the series since II and III" in high school* - I also wasn't a fan of the 'grittier' feel as opposed to the more high fantasy of III at the time).

However, VII... has not aged well^. (Don't, uh... don't watch the rest of that, if you've got a tendency to motion sickness.)

Oh, I completely agree. I think I was more verbose than I needed to be and messed up the sentence. I love VII, and I'd probably advise someone to start with that purely on that basis, but it definitely would not sit well with the graphics/visual conscious. For them, I would recommend VI, because the SNES look is more timeless, imo, and it's still an exceptional game.

HAH.

Nah, I meant the characters and setting and such of the Chrono games, all the stuff required to make a game that ties (directly) in with the lore. It's not a Chrono game without Lavos or Zeal and so on.

Ditto with Xenogears. The original game was supposed to be Episode Five of Seven, part of a much longer series, according to the design docs you can find floating around the internet (search "Xenogears: Perfect Works"). There were conceptualized prequels moving through the game's timeline both before and after its setting. But when the group broke from Square and founded Monolith, they lost access to a lot of Xenogears's rights as far as characters and story goes, so you ended up with Xenosaga and Xenoblade instead - working from similar or tangentially-related ideas, but (sadly) no longer in the same world or continuity.

Oh absofrickinlutely. MAN I love that soundtrack. It's better than Trigger's IMO, minus a few standout amazing songs. (Main Trigger theme, Battle Against Magus, Corridors of Time, Singing Mountain, World Revolution.)

I think the mechanics would have worked if they'd been fine-tuned a little, and more importantly if they hadn't been bolted to a Chrono game. People saw the title and (rightfully, IMO) assumed it would work like the game it was clearly a sequel to... and it didn't.

The story... yeah that needed some severe work. I want to like it, and it's a little easier to comprehend now that it's been almost twenty years since it came out and there's places like the Chrono Compendium that have archived all the stuff and summarized the plot for people to make it easier to follow. But it's still a massive cluster, and it's clear that they had an extremely ambitious team who weren't getting the time or support they needed to do what they wanted with the game.

And man, SO MANY USELESS CHARACTERS. Some of them may have been mechanically acceptable but really, how much bearing did they have on the plot? CT worked so well in part because of its extremely limited cast, and everyone (with the possible minor exception of Ayla) had an extremely important role in the story. Nobody was just there, nobody was just baggage.

Gotta love the Sega/Nintendo divide of the late 80s to early/mid 90s. I really wonder how many great games I missed out on because I was pretty much exclusively a Nintendo kid.

My best friend is a fan of Chrono cross. It's one of his all time favorites, right up there with okami, ffx-2 (first game he mathematically figured out, apparently there is a formula that you can use to figure out odds and such, and how much damage is done when you break 9999 damage. I'm sure it exists in other games, and he did it with ff6 too but this was the first he sat down and did it longhand and figured out the whole thing. Something about the math there was "elegant"), ff 12 and 13, xenogears, and a few others.

I am forever grateful to Sega for phantasy star. Wonderful blend of fantasy and Sci fi, extremely japanese in tske (too much for some).

Ps2 has the best, darkest ending for any game I have ever known. I challenge even the mighty Orthos to come up with better.

I had neighbors twice who had Sega systems, once when I was in kindergarten and 1st grade, then when I was in junior high. Both times either I moved away or they did after a year or two.

Otherwise we were pretty much exclusively a Nintendo household. We had an NES at the children's home where my parents worked when I was 4-6, then I bought a SNES when I was in my early teens with money I saved for a good four or five years. My brother and I got Gameboys shortly after, then I bought a GBA when it came out and my brother bought an N64 a little after. Now I own a DS and 3DS and gave my GBA to my niece along with some of my older games, and one of these days I'm going to get around to getting a WiiU; I have near zero interest in a PS-anything or any XBox. Otherwise, fully PC gamer; almost all the other games I play regularly came off Steam.

*looks at list of recently-played games* Sam and Max, Undertale, Cave Story, FF rereleases. Yeah, all Steam.

I love Phantasy Star!!

And yes, that ending was f%*~ed up!

While I can be strongly in favor of some dark themes in fantasy (as long as they don't venture too strongly into gore or sex territory, I think there are more interesting concepts to pursue), I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I'll put characters through the wringer to earn it, but I like it best when most (if not all) of the cast of a game gets a positive conclusion. That said I'm also not averse to a bittersweet tearjerker from time to time.

Phantasy Star is one of the names that has been on my to-check-out list for some time, along with the Gunstar series.

Scion - Wiki - White Wolf Wikia

I have all the main books, but haven't actually had the opportunity to play it. Modern day setting, except the various Gods and Goddesses of the myriad Pantheons in the world are all real, and the players are their children. There is a secret war going on between the God(esse)s and the Titans, and the players deal with the small level stuff that slips past, eventually increasing in power to the Demi-God book, and finally the God book. The series ends with Ragnarok.

Exalted - Wiki - White Wolf Wikia

You are One Punch Man. Or, if unfamiliar with the reference, you are the lead characters in a martial arts anime. I don't know how to give a good synopsis, as I'm still new to the setting, but that captures it so far.

Yeah, the hype can do that. Sorry it didn't meet expectations. The soundtrack is amazing regardless of how you feel about the game, though.

It met and perhaps even exceeded the hype for me; the only way I could be really happier with it was if it was longer. But much like with FFIX, I get the impression I'm dead-center in the perfect bracket to be the game's target audience, so everything just added up perfectly. Right age, right prior gaming experiences, right gameplay and story preferences, right exposure to inspirational mediums for the game itself.

Toby Fox is working on another game in the coming year - a second game was a high-tier stretch goal for the Kickstarter - and he's said a few things on Twitter about the potential for it, but he's kept it pretty cagey so far. Nobody even knows if it's gonna take place in the same universe or go completely something new. Either way, I'll probably end up buying it the second it's on Steam, like I did with UT.

I'm the opposite. Music is one of the biggest things that will draw me to a game. The only thing I need more than that is a story. If the story is good enough and the music enthralling enough, I can tolerate poor mechanics.

Poor mechanics piss me off :-D

Really, for me, my enjoyment of video games is directly tied to how good I am at it, there is only so many times I'll do something over before I just give up.

That being said, I love a challenge outside video games, and never give up.

Edit: to clarify, I'm the guy that played video games on easy, and had the strategy guide.

I'm also one of those guys that only played Madden (it fed my need for strategy).

Oh good, it's not just me. My rage quit threshold is very low and I usually end up playing at the just let me win dammit setting when I do play. I'm an unapologetic button masher and have no patience with complicated game mechanics. :)

But real life problems I will worry at until I have them solved. It's an exercise in creativity. Video games will never really be that because they're too limited. In real life you can turn a problem upside down and inside out until you figure it out. Video games are too limiting and I just want them to give me the answer already if they're not going to let me do it my way. :P

Yeah I imagine that's the main difference. I'm very heavily primarily a story-based gamer, which is probably one of the main reasons I lean heavily toward RPGs and am not as interested in platformers or puzzle games.

I've changed a bit the last few years, I no longer play Madden (thank you! liberal concussion guilt) and embrace the story (thank you GTA for a game I cared enough to be surprised by).

So, more challenges for me, I even started my own embargo on strategy guides and Wikipedia during play throughs.

I still hate useless f#%@ing puzzles tho, and sometimes I get sick of fetching s~~!, so I need an open, anything goes environment.

It depends on the story, and just HOW BAD the mechanics are. Like I said, I can overlook a LOT of mechanical suckage if the story is good enough. But yeah, I'll admit I have my limits.

I hate platform games, especially Mario Bros. (Sorry Tacticslion!).

I wouldn't be playing video games if we were still in the dark ages of platforms and puzzles.

I love great graphics, the geography of Skyrim alone is worth the 12 bucks I paid for it, but they aren't the be all end all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm very much a retro guy graphics-wise. I've learned to be very wary about high-end graphics, more often than not I'm disappointed in the story behind the games that look pretty.

Part of that is probably nostalgia, admittedly, but a large part is also a personal preference toward simplicity.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The games I do tend to find worth the trouble are either of the puzzle game that rewards you with pieces of story when you figure it out or they are games like Animal Crossing that have no win conditions and playing the game is basically a form of meditation.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Watching people play Animal Crossing reminds me way too much of SimCity and similar games, which always kinda drove me bonkers trying to play them. I think the lack of win condition is one of the main reasons... I gotta have a plot-related goal to work toward =P

You design your own goals.

I hate AC, it's too cutsie for me, but I have played the heck out of the Sims in my time.

...I have made some horrible, horrible human beings. My wife is always like "why do you always make bullies, jerks, thieves, and men who leave bastard children all over town with a string of ex-girlfriends?"

"Because I won't do that in real life, but it doesn't mean I haven't thought of it."

Playing Animal Crossing is the mental equivalent of getting out the crayons and coloring book. It feels creative and you can sort of tune out most of your brain for a while. Great for when you need to let the rest of your mind continue to worry at real life problems. :)
But I can see where it would be really frustrating if you want to play something that actually engages your mind.
Edit: And I love that it's cutesie. But I also love Hello Kitty, so obviously cutesie is not a problem for me. ^.^

So, in case you needed another depressing indication of the state of the current corporate work ethic (I'll spoiler in case you don't):

NobodysHome's Depressing Revelation:

As most of you know, I work for a global megacorporation writing technical curriculum for the people who configure said megacorporation's software. Confused? Go to your bank's web site. Notice that it looks and behaves differently from all the other bank's web sites? I'm the one who teaches the bank's IT guys how to configure the underlying application -- all the business logic, database interactions, navigation, etc. Not "web design", but, "What happens programmatically when the user clicks here?" And honestly, we mostly train consultants. The bank just says, "Hey guys! Make our web site do this!" and we make it so.

So our training is expensive. Think school is bad? It's not uncommon for us to charge $1000-$1500 a day for training. For that, we provide live hands-on practice configuring the application.

So, recently, due to a licensing fru-fru (a technical term), we had to switch the underlying database for all of our courses. Which, of course, means re-testing all of those wonderful practices with the new database.

So I get to Chapter 10 of the course I'm testing, and the lab doesn't work. And I debug. And I find out that this lab has errors in it, and cannot have worked. Ever.

The course has been taught for over a year now, to over 2000 students.

So... we passed internal testing. External testing. And dozens of live classes. And every. Single. Person. Who ever tested the lab. Found that if they followed the instructions the lab didn't work, so they just copied in the solution file (which worked) and moved on.

You know, if my company is paying $1500 a day for me to get trained on something, and one of the practices doesn't work as written, I'd at least like to know why.
Having a year-old course that's been broken all this time without a peep from anyone is pretty depressing...

(I'm accustomed to 6:00 am instant messages: "Hey, NobodysHome! I can't get this lab working for this student! What's wrong?", so if a student had complained, I'd know about it.)

Ah, well. I'm still getting paid for working from home. Hard to complain.
