Looks nice if you like a laptop for gaming. I prefer machines with easily-replaced components for when I beat the keyboard to death. WWWWWASDWWWWWAAADDDS!S!S!

Fungal infection as a result of increased sensitivity to fungi from antibiotics happened almost immediately after starting meds for the MRSA. It hurt like hell.

Now a cold is attacking me. Or flu. Can't tell. Coughing like crazy and dizz. Because viruses laugh at antibiotics. Like the second the MRSA disappeared.

I HATE my body.

I think it'd probably do well for light-to-moderate gaming. You're two biggest bottlenecks are usually the video processor + memory and the hard drive speed; the 2GB dedicated nVidia VPU & 7200 RPM SATA hard drive are good for this, but you'll have to set the game resolution lower on the more hard core 3D/first-person games. Check out the recommended requirements of the games you want to play now, and make sure this notebook's specs exceed them (especially for the VPU/graphics). If possible within your budget, you might consider a 4GB nVidia VPU notebook if you're going to be gaming a lot. You can swap in a faster SSD hard drive later if you're not too intimated by working on computers, but upgrading the VPU isn't usually do-able.

Personal preferences: The 1920 x 1080 screen is a minimum, but I personally hate 17" notebooks (just too dang big). Likewise, I'd pull the DVDRW drive to save on weight (and to protect it) if you are going to be lugging it outside the home, slapping it back into the spindle/bay as needed to install a game or watch a movie. Also, your notebook will generate considerable heat while gaming, so get a laptop desk or a sturdy hardcover book to rest the notebook on while it sits on your lap.

Recommendations: Snag a USB flash drive to make your OS/preinstalled apps recovery drive. You'll want a 4GB or 8GB drive if you just want to use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to make a recovery drive for just the OS. You'll want a 16GB drive if you want use MSI's utility to make a recovery drive that recovers the OS and all the preinstalled apps. You can usually get by with just the OS recovery drive and still have enough room on it to also copy over the drivers and needed patches/fixes (should all be downloadable from MSI's support website). I also wouldn't bother installing anything on the laptop until after you've let Windows update download and install the huge list of software updates any new notebook needs.

Also this. Bang-for-your-buck, you can always get more and faster hardware with desktop instead of laptop. The gap increases if you can get one built to your requirements, or better still, build it yourself (like Treppa can). Plus, when a component fails (and components eventually always fail), they are much easier & cheaper to work on and easier to get parts. Modern desktops use mostly interchangeable components of the same form factor, so dropping in a faster video card or SSD hard drive or a better keyboard down the road is relatively painless.

The only real downside to a desktop is that it's a desktop; you can't lug it around easily. Or sit it on your chest at night while you lie in bed watching a DVD on it or surf the Internet (slaadi are notoriously lazy when not on a heat rock).

---

By comparison, this Acer Aspire is what I bought with my Christmas money and savings. I mostly play games that are at least 4-5 years old and installed via Steam or GOG. I've personally found Acer to be just as reliable hardware-wise as Asus or Dell, and I always uninstall all the preinstalled apps that come with it. Downsides, this model comes with no DVDRW drive (but I have an external one already) and the battery isn't user-removable (but I'm an old hand at working on Intel-/AMD-based computers). I've installed (all free):

  • Comodo Internet Security as my firewall & antivirus (can be a bit too paranoid/picky though)
  • CCleaner to rip out/uninstall apps and shovelware and for light configuration tweaking... and because I was too lazy to just do a clean Win10 re-install
  • MalwareBytes for periodic sweeps & removal of Internet-borne crud (usually nothing, as Comodo is pretty thorough)
  • Firefox and Opera as my browsers
  • LibreOffice for anything that would require MS Office
  • TextPad, for rough draft writing, idea jotting, and editing configuration files/HTML
  • 7-Zip for .ZIP and .RAR file uncompression, and
  • VLC Player for DVD movies and offline viewing of YouTube files
I also use The Bat! for my email client, as I've used it for years now and it's immune to email-transmitted malware, but it is $27. I also hate hate touchpads, so I have a wireless mouse with USB receiver and running on a rechargeable AA battery.

Hmm how would it handle fallout 4 I'm checking the specs but unfortunately I'm way behind on my info.

Amby: You like Comodo? I had it once, but it was very heavy at the time (maybe 2-3 years ago?)

Looks like barely. If you want to really enjoy Fallout 4, I'd strongly recommend at least a 4GB nVidia (or AMD) video card/GPU... which gets expensive in a laptop.

Edit: If you're set on playing Fallout 4 now, maybe a separate X-Box One or PS4 is a better option? If you don't need portability, you could get (or build) a sweet gaming desktop.

I dislike Comodo less than all the other free options I've tried. I've used it for long enough now that I can usually tolerate it. I'm not happy with it's load on system resources, but it is still less than Symantec or AVG (and McAfee is terrible).

Edit: I haven't done any real comparisons & research in a couple years, so there might be more safe and/or less resource-intensive options out there. I've heard good (or at least non-terrible) things about Microsoft's built-in antivirus Windows Defender, but I still don't trust Windows' built-in Firewall.

Freezing cold from sickness. Bundled up while working. Sweating while shivering. Then a rash breaks out rapidly, because apparently I'm allergic to a new soap I started using or the detergent in my clothes, not sure which. I freak the f*** out because its so rapid. ODDLY the cold symptoms stop. Popped a zyrtec. Rash calming. Body calms down, adrenaline wears off, cold symptoms are all back.

I would REALLY go with an NVidia Video Card. Bethesda seem to like NVidia video cards better than AMD video cards. Case in point is that I have an AMD video card and it is having more issues than a NVidia one would have.

OK. I have to admit, this is definitely an "obsessive-compulsive" thing:

Co-worker spent HOURS this morning trying to get alerts working in the application. They worked on the demo, but not on the server proper. He pinged me for help, but I hadn't heard of such a thing. A few hours later, they suddenly started working.

I immediately realized it was because all our labs say, "Set the activation date to today's date."
When we first wrote the labs, I insisted we should be using yesterday's date because I loves me some Captain Yesterday. Er, no... that's not right! We should be using yesterday's date because if we ever encountered any significant time differences it would break the labs.

That was 8 years ago. They ignored me, used "today's date", and as of this year our servers are on UTC (aka Greenwich), while our clients are on Pacific, and the time difference was killing the labs.

So I was frustrated with my team for all of 2 minutes, and then I realized, "Who else in the entire team would even WORRY about time differences between server and client at some random point in the future?"

I guess it's why I get the "somewhat reasonable" bucks...
