Do they make you get the ones with no headphone jack?

I have no idea. I use a flip phone. We have thankfully not lost either iPhone in a while (Impus Minor and NobodysWife), but NobodysWife is making noises that she wants to upgrade to an 8. If it doesn't have a headphone jack, that would be a deal-breaker for her.

My favorite "tech moment" this year: An OS update "bricked" Impus Minor's iPod around 16 months ago. We finally took it in and they fixed it for free. Since he has an iPhone and Impus Major (curse him!) has me addicted to having an iPod in the car, I asked, "Hey, Impus Minor! Since you haven't used that in 16 months, can I have it?"

"No, Dad! It has my name on it!"

Kids. *SIGH*

(Admittedly, my first-generation iPad is capable of running Pandora or Spotify, but it wheezes when it does it...)

I was not looking forward to retracing her steps to school, those three blocks.

But only because phones aren't cheap.

My morning has been similarly inundated with "pointless errands brought on by forgetful kids", but at least it was all (relatively) affordable:

  • The Impii are going as "The Luigi Brother Cultists", wearing creepy cheapo plastic Mario Brothers masks, dark grey robes, and carrying bloody weapons. The way Impus Major moves around and talks in it is just creepy. So of course Impus Minor's robe had already vanished as of this morning, so off to the Halloween store I went. And of course, Oh My Goodness, the prices had doubled since the weekend. Paying $34 for a cheap $1.25 robe is painful, to say the least, but at least the kids'll be happy in their matching creepiness.
  • On his way to school, Impus Minor lost his backpack as well. (WTH, Impus Minor?) So I got to walk to school and back looking for it. And hilariously, unlike San Francisco where all the pedestrians avoided me (both NobodysWife and lisamarlene agreed that I looked like a combat-stressed 'Nam vet rather than a heavy metal frontman, just because of my scum coat (a Vietnam-era oversized army coat) and grey speckled beard), in Albany all the residents wanted to talk to me. So it was a fun walk, but pointless
  • I continued in my vain quest to find our giant Halloween bucket. It must be in storage. *SIGH*
  • In terms of replacing phones, I don't know what plan you're on, but I'm on the Verizon family plan, which is stupid ($190/month for 6 devices), but with so many devices we are *always* in the middle of a "renew for 2 years and get a free device on this line" offer, so I've never paid more than $99 for an iPhone. I can usually finagle a free earlier model out of them, but SOME people...

Our "kid" lost a phone at a park in Normal, IL. She lost a phone at a bar in Louisville, KY. She's lost one in CA. WA. CO. I think she managed to get out of Louisiana without losing one...which is both good but disappointing. I was really hoping she could lose a phone in every state as her claim to family fame.

I don't blame her. If I wasn't already a frothing antiAppleite, that would have been the line crossed to make me so. As it is, it's just one more piece of reason I have to hate them.

I hate iPhones. Strangely, iPads I don't mind. As a tablet they work for me, but take the same OS and throw it into a phone and I would rather pour acid all over myself.

I dislike their tech, but I have a personal despisal for the company behind it that I don't have for many other organizations.

Steve Jobs is at the top of the list of people I hate who haven't done anything other than be a douchebag, like murder people or pass evil laws or start wars. And every time I learn something new about him, it just further deepens the seething disgust he inspires.

My evening is getting easier and easier.

I think I've mentioned one of the kids in my gaming group suffers from such acute depression that he's been hospitalized on suicide watch twice, takes medication, did Outward Bound, and so forth. Yet it's a point of pride that he still feels that gaming with our group is the most helpful aspect of his life.

So every Halloween he comes over, hangs out with me, and helps give out candy. It's really kind of sweet.

And this year Impus Minor is short on volunteer hours, so he's volunteered to man the door. (He insists it counts.)

So me and my depressed friend will watch crappy Halloween movies while eating spaghetti and meatballs while Impus Minor slaves away, giving out candy.

And eventually, NobodysWife will get home and there will be great celebration. (Needless to say, HER work HAS to have a Halloween party, because gaming companies are Cool. Global Megacorporation is trying hard these days, going so far as to *gasp* allow employees to wear costumes to work today. And even that was a monumental shift in their attitude...)

Mathematician would be too much of a pain to program from scratch. Pass. No dislike for the class or anything, just more work than I'm willing to put in at this point.

Now for some reason I want to make a platfomer video game where I somehow kidnap Nobodyswife and Lisamarlene and thereby force Nobodyhome(whingey wizard can be the second player) to go through confusing mazes filled with strange creatures that can be easily defeated with everyday objects thrown at them to get them back.

For some reason, full, hearty meals will be able to be found at the bottom of garbage cans, completely sanitary, warm, and delcious for them to eat.

No matter where they go, they will hear cool synthesized pop music that makes their travel less onerous.

They will also meet FAWTLs on the trip who will give them more items to thriow at these strange creatures, who will not elaborate why they seek to stop them. For some reason, despite helping them get their wives back from a madman, they will charge them a premium for every item they wish to throw. Fortunately, they will get lts of money from defeating these strange creatures, who will leave tightly rolled crisp clean bills upon their carcasses as they die from massive head wounds inflicted by nobodyshome(and wingey wizard) throwing things at them.

So why is it that when I imagine being the protagonist in this video game, with Whingey Wizard as my sidekick, all I can think about is listening to his insistence that, "They want to help us, so they should be giving us all those items for free. If they won't, it's just not believable for me..."

*SIGH*. This year almost all of the houses on our block put up decorations (desecrations?). We're all stocked up and our lights are on.

Yet it's 6:10 pm and we have had... not one single, solitary visitor.

I know Daylight Savings Time has really screwed up Halloween, but nobody by 6? That's just... worrisome...

I made a dice-rolling game in RPGMaker several years back. Literally nothing more than you roll d6, NPC rolls d6, and game declares Win, Lose, or Draw, then offers to Roll Again or Quit.

It took five hours of code tweaking, testing, and redoing.

I am not doing Mathematician. It would be easily ten times as complex.
