I've always said that the upside to the pandemic is it forced all these bands that would otherwise be touring back into a studio to record so there has been a shitload of new music released in the last year.
The downside is it gave Limp Bizkit time to record a new album.
Having said that, I don't hate it.

We were feeling so low yesterday (WW found out he didn't get another job, and Miz Daisy accidentally donated $600 instead of $6.00 to Act Blue by not pressing the decimal button carefully, so now we're trying to get it refunded for her), so we put the kids to bed early and blew money on going out to the movie theater.
We shouldn't have, but I don't regret it.
Dune was beautiful in places, problematic in places, but I will forgive it a lot for how perfect the thopters were.

And the fiasco continues: One of today's candidates not only was late to the 1-on-1 with my manager, but then misspelled her name in her follow-up thank-you.
Which might have been OK if it hadn't been an e-mail thread with my manager's name spelled out in every to/from header.
And yeah. Four candidates this week. For a technical position where your job is to produce publication-ready presentations, documents, and videos.
All four resumes have bad page breaks in them. Not just, "This bullet got cut in half between pages" (bad enough), but, "The final page of the resume is just a header and a footer," or even, "There's a blank page in the middle of the resume."
It's baaaaaaaaaad...
I've said it before but it bears repeating with a clue hammer: If you cannot be bothered to present your best work in your resume and your responses, you're not worth hiring.
And if these mis-formatted, typo-ridden resumes ARE your best work, you're not worth hiring.
Any CPAs out there looking to expand their horizons?

Last year, Hasbro crowdfunded a remake of HeroQuest, which I backed. Got notice yesterday that it shipped, and should be here on Monday. Yay!
Wait, there is going to be a re-release of Hero Quest...YES!!! THAT IS FRAGGIN AWESOME!!! I loved that game as a kid, but my original set meet it's fate due to some rather bad cat behavior bout 10 years ago, so you are saying, I can get a new set. HELLZ YEAH!!! Going to order one right now if I can. Syrus Terrigan I owe you a drink!

The most depressing thing about this candidate search right now is the clear indication as to how much COVID impacted teachers: They were on the front lines when schools went to remote learning, were the first to be berated if the online learning didn't go well, and are now caught smack-dab in the middle of the masking/no masking/vaccine/no vaccine battles.
They're tired of it, and if our resume batch is any indication, they're leaving in droves.
We have hundreds of resumes from teachers. Kindergarten teachers. English teachers. History teachers. P.E. teachers. For a position that clearly indicates you need to have a background in corporate accounting at some level.
Which means that teachers are so fed up that they've taken to the, "Throw out a few hundred job applications and see what sticks" approach. Which is a bad, bad place to be.
*** I got my Ph.D. in Mathematics only 5 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, so there was a glut of extremely-qualified math professors in the U.S. at the time. I was told that I'd need to put out 200 resumes to have a decent chance of a job. I put out 103 resumes and got two interviews and one offer, so I felt pretty lucky at the time. But I know the desperation of, "I need to get something," and flooding the world with your resume...

Maybe the price of original Heroquest sets will go down if the reissue goes general - I suspect the opposite, though.
(I'm sure it wouldn't be possible to find the necessary files to 3-D or otherwise print your own set, and even if it were, you shouldn't because that would be very naughty. I suppose Hasbro could allow you to do so legally, but I bet they won't)

And in non-work news before a full day of interviewing candidates, we watched The Harder They Fall on Netflix. The first half-hour is amazing. Unfortunately, it rapidly deteriorates into tediousness, so I can't overall recommend it.
But the funniest part?
It starts off with something along the lines of, "These. People. Were. Real."
Reading their biographies after watching the movie, it's very much akin to if I'd looked up a dozen random people in the phone book, made a movie about them, then started the movie with, "These. People. Are. Real."
The movie has nothing whatsoever to do with their actual lives.
Kind of hilarious, really.

What was the file format? Because there was an occasional issue with docx (and possibly regular doc) files that might still persist where the well formatted text is suddenly messed up when opened in different editor: Word vs Open/Libre Office vs Google Doc and you won't know it will be messed up until you open it into the other program, so that one issue might not be the sender's fault (as opposed to spelling and grammar issues).

Any CPAs out there looking to expand their horizons?
With bad applications like that it makes me wonder if the advertised salary and benefits package is just simply too low to attract capable and experienced candidates. If I understand correctly your job is an extremely affluent area and trying to get REAL talent in those areas is going to require going above and beyond what has EVER been required in the past.
It is a workers market right now with so many places in every industry and the types who are ideal for X or Y have the chance to turn down everything that isn't 150% of what they would have expected or demanded even a year ago.

It's work from home. So we could take that worker in Arkansas and they'd still get 6 figures. I think the issue is the way the position is advertised. It's for an "instructional designer" so we get people with teaching or instructional design positions, when this is primarily a technical job.
I blame HR.

I remember getting into arguments with my old boss about font changes mid-word, spelling and grammar issues, and all of that kind of stuff in a resume. He didn't think it mattered and I always said that it indicated the quality of work you'd get if you hire them.
From what I've heard he still hasn't learned.

It's funny; I feel like I could write a "resume advice" column from the resumes we're going through today:
(1) If it's over 2 pages long, it should be because you're including a lot of stuff relevant to the job you're applying for. I don't need an extensive list of the classes you've taught, the organizations to which you belong, the conferences you've attended, nor the volunteer work you've done. They teach high schoolers to do that to get their resumes UP to a decent length. Once you have actual job experience, cut out the fat. It's amazing how much more powerful a resume is when you're not listing everything you did at a job, but only your top 2-3 achievements at the job. I don't need a 12-bullet job description. Nor 30 bullets, for that matter.
(2) So gaps are "bad", and I understand the desire to fill them, but if what you did during the gap isn't relevant just give me a quick summary: "2017-2020 founded and ran a nonprofit to help build wells in Nowhereistan." Great. I know you were doing something useful. I'm happy. I don't need two paragraphs on exactly what you did, because you're not building wells for me.
(3) Vagueness is bad. For privacy I won't copy this person's quote, but it's along the lines of, "Worked with computers."
(4) Presentation matters. Whether you're misspelling the name of the software you claim to be an expert in, including blank pages in a PDF, or adding bizarre hyphens where no hyphens should dare to go, have someone proofread your final PDF before you turn it in.
EDIT: I know. We really want the last guy. But we're required by corporate policy to interview everyone HR handed to us, so coming up next: The candidate who misspelled our manager's name in replying to her. So the name was in the email header. And she misspelled it.

Replying just to favorite again. A resume represents the best work you're going to get out of someone. So if it's a hot mess...

In Far Cry 6 in order to secure the services of a handicapable dachshund you have to get the adorable lik guy some alligator meat. So I find this gator, think "okay, so I'm going to shoot this a@!~+%% in the head with my sniper rifle and head back to camp. Easy peasy!"
First thing I do wrong is shoot it in the ass instead of the head. The second thing I did wrong was I didn't look around and notice the 5 other gators lurking in the reeds or whatever. The third thing I did wrong was using my sniper rifle at all because it did nothing except piss them off. The fourth thing I did wrong was do all of this within distance of the main road so not only am getting mauled and tossed between gators I'm also getting shot at by the goddamn soldiers.
The only thing I did right was stock up on TNT before I left. So lil puppy got his mutilated gator meat.

Ok, that's more like being sloppy when saving as pdf and not checking it afterwards for errors.

So, I've found in Far Cry 6 if you get a person riding their horse yo get off and then you shoot at the horse they will freak out and start kicking the person next to them and then run off or kind of just wander around the area.
So I found this cul-de-sac where I shoot at them from a wooded hilltop, they get off to look around, I shoot at the horse, it freaks out and then I shoot the person and then rinse and repeat every few minutes.
I currently have 6 horses wandering around riderless.

You can tell this was the first day without a power outage/brownout/blink/whatever in a while. When I got distracted by real life (as I do) I left this post unfinished literally hours ago, came back and accidentally discovered it sitting there. Power-outages and ADD suck when paired together and I have lost I don't know how many thoughts/posts/responses to things midway through over the last week or so. It's frustrating because I have that haunting feeling I'm forgetting something, but my brain's just like, "¯\_(ツ)_/¯, sorry, dude, I got nothin'" and I just gotta be, like, "Yeah, that's fair."
It's been an annoying thing.
