We're all safely home from Disneyland. All kinds of fun stuff to complain about once I'm done unpacking and doing laundry, but this pretty much said everything you needed to know about the pandemic in the U.S.:
(1) California vaccination rate: 48.8%
(2) U.S. vaccination rate: 46.2%
(3) Vaccination rate among Disneyland parkgoers, based on Disneyland's rule of, "Fully-vaccinated individuals do not need to wear a mask": 99.5%
The saddest part? On the rare occasions that we talked to other masked individuals, all of them were fully-vaccinated but were choosing to wear masks anyway.
Considering the number of small children around us who were coughing with their mouths open, sneezing without covering their noses, and so forth, I was just as happy to be wearing a mask for my entire time in the park.
EDIT: And for anyone thinking, "That's amazing!", the decision whether or not to wear a mask was left to the individual visitor; Disneyland employees never mentioned nor checked vaccination status. It was entirely up to you whether or not you wore a mask, based on the honor system.
Which really, really depresses me every time I see it in action.

The thing that's really terrifying me right now is the heat wave set to hit Seattle: 111˚F (44˚C) in downtown Seattle on Monday?!?!!? Nobody in Seattle has air conditioning, and it's 3 straight days of 98˚F+ temperatures. My mother just turned 90 yesterday. She doesn't need that kind of heat.
(She's in an assisted living facility, so I hope it's one of the few places that has AC, but it's pretty scary looking at those temps -- Oakland Airport's all-time record is 104˚F, and even though Google isn't coming through for me right now, I think Albany's is 108˚F.

Anyone have any experience with the TTRPG hosting service "The Foundry"?
We've been using it a good deal, after moving over from Roll20. I can't speak from a DM-ing point of view, other than that both our DMs are very keen on it themselves, but it's nice and easy and fun to use for players, and seems to be very well supported in terms of technical backup and mods, etc.

I've played on the foundy twice. It was set up by someone else. But it was really nice. I think it requires more time to set up like a roll20 table, but once you got it where you want its going to it going to save you a lot of time.
So if you're looking at a long term campaign its gonna be worth it.Drejk |
Speaking of recently bought games - I got myself Watch_Dogs 2 and now I am installing it...
Yeah, yeah, it's yet another ubisoft open world game.
I just read it takes place in Bay Area, and now I wonder if NobodysHome, GothBard, or Imps played it and if they did, how do they find its rendering of their area. Not that I expect accuracy, but are there any particularly hilarious aspects or tweaks?

I'll ask the Impii -- I play very few games, and it doesn't sound like one GothBard has.
EDIT: GothBard said she started it and it seemed authentic enough (escaping from a place in San Francisco and fleeing across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito), but she only played a few minutes of it.

What is wrong with the camera operator? Why are they breathing so heavily? Are they excited? Are they just tired?
Why should oil sinking to the bottom of a bowl full of water mean that you have 'bad eyes', or are suffering from the effects of black magic?
Nobody knows. Perhaps it's better that we don't.

I compared the maps and there are quite liberties taken in general landscape...
I considered going for a walk across Albany but I don't think it even ended being on the map...

Across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, then up past Berkeley. If you get to El Cerrito you've gone too far.

Non work stuff.
I have a pulled groin muscle, on the other side from the one I pulled three years ago.
I've gotten to level 40 (with a cap of 100) in Biomutant. The latest weapon I crafted has a bat handle with a computer keyboard base and a voodoo doll tied to the keyboard.
Not as powerful as the sword in the stone with a saw blade and barbed wire attached to it but pretty close.

I have a bad news you, concerning your home...
Nudle Maps (watch dogs wiki article map)
The whole Berkeley-Albany-Richmond area ended crushed into a tiny zone. As did everything north of Golden Gate bridge...
(I haven't reached that part yet, only looked on the map)

I assume they have rules like we have. When we started letting vaccinated people not wear masks, the manager was very clear that we are NOT ALLOWED to ask people if they are vaccinated or not. You have to go on the honor system. Which, let's be honest, generally doesn't work.

Hey NH, what on earth is going on with the massive spread of trash around, and expansion of, the homeless encampments in the East Bay? I was horrified to see how bad things have gotten. What the heck happened?
Oh... that's a VEEEEEEERY political hot-button topic, but trying to tip-toe through the mine fields:
(1) Our good weather has always been a draw for the homeless, so we've always had a sizeable homeless population as they migrate here from other states.(2) Starting circa the 1990s, local governments started extremely generous programs to try to assist the homeless. There was a huge uptick in migration here.
(3) There's a huge sentiment among newcomers that "everybody deserves to live wherever they want to", resulting in rumors of upcoming free housing for the homeless (cue even more migration) and refusal to enforce even the most basic of sanitation laws. (The Albany police cleared out a particularly egregious encampment a few years ago and it was a political firestorm.)
So, mild weather, extremely generous policies, no policing, and a notoriously-liberal community that tends to hand over cash to anyone who asks. Why wouldn't you move here?

Yep. Exactly. It's the honor system. Which is why I was so depressed to see so few masks. I try to think the best of people, but they keep going out of their way to prove me wrong.

The Honor System:
Because American consumers are just so honorable...
As someone who has lived in Florida surely you realize the bloodshed that will ensue if you start asking people if they're vaccinated or not.
As terrible as it is, the honor system right now is probably the only reason that the US hasn't devolved into some sort of Purge type of situation. Yet. The summer is still young..

Speaking of appalling customer service, we (used to) order the calico's special kidney diet food through a mail order place associated with our vet.
A few weeks ago I placed an order, and they said, "We're sorry. This product has been back ordered with no expected return date, so we've canceled your order."
And they kept my cash.
I contacted customer support and they responded, "Oh, refunds take 5-7 business days."
It's been 10 since I contacted support, or 14 business days since they preemptively canceled my order. In the meantime, I've learned that my corner vet carries the same food. So they went ahead and lost $150/month in recurring business because they wanted to pocket one $50 payment.
Good on them. Won't be doing business with them again, and will recommend that no one else do so either.

It's been about fifty-fifty on non-masked folks making sick sounds and motions at work.
Still wearing my mask AND maintaining ten feet from them. Run away from them if they try to close the distance.
The 'half-truth' I offer to the reasonable customers is that I woke up with sniffles and am trying to protect them. They've been cool, BUT then ask why I am at work...
EDIT On better computer because rant is rant...
CURRENTLY at said portion of our location we have *three* Full-time associates fourth is out with complications of excruciating pain from a hernia and SHOULD NOT have tried to rush back to work, a manager, and a liquor manager.
We are beyond 'skeleton crew' at this point. We're at 'skeleton balancing on one leg with one arm missing and teetering waiting for a Good Sharp Shove'.
The Employer steadfastly refuses to pay competitive wages (before folks start whining that it's the fault of unemployment being 'too generous').
If they *do* manage to hire someone at anything remotely close to a competitive wage, they only let that person work twelve hours a week.
So all the new hires quit after their two week orientation and milking the 'easy' money and go hire with someplace that's willing to give them hours AND pay.
The complaint I hear is "Well, it's because of the union, we can't afford to hire any new folks with the full-timers soaking up the hours..." That's b#$%@#@%. Utter b*!%~@#@. We paid *far more* hours out in the past and we still managed to earn 1-3% over margin every quarter.
No, what it is is grifting corporates and managers that would make Scrooge look like an outright philanthropist *before* his Christmas revelation, and then paint this picture of how 'we're all lazy and want too much money'.
I do not condone violence in the workplace, nor do I encourage it, but if other workplaces are like mine, I forsee MANY more workplace shootings in the future.
I've asked my coworkers if they DO decide to go on a shooting rampage to either A. Do it on a day that I'm 'off'. or B. Shoot me in the back of the head FIRST so I don't see it coming nor have time to panic or register it -- as a professional courtesy.

I like to tell stories about my mother's overall toughness and survival skills, like the time at 68 she took a poor Alaskan ranger on a 23-mile death march because he figured, "How far can this little old lady want to go, anyway?"
I'm not particularly concerned about her, even in the 111°F heat that's supposed to hit today. (The worst I've ever been in was 113°F in the valley, and that sucked.) Even if her living facility doesn't have air conditioning, my younger brother has a place right on the water that has a heat pump that he says, "Works great and keeps the place cool."
However, imagining 111°F hitting a major city without significant air conditioning is terrifying. I hope Seattle comes out of this OK. They've had a couple of days to prepare. But it's not good.

Mistakes Were Made: Our lead instructor is rather infamous for his inattention to detail.
He was updating our course on partner management and chose to replace "White guy" partner Bob with "Black guy" partner Bob. A perfectly reasonable decision...
...except "Black guy" partner Bob is in doctor's scrubs and is wearing a stethoscope.
Are we now implying that our software requires a licensed medical professional to install?

No, but the stories you've told about some of your coworkers tend to make one wonder if they need their heads examined.
Maybe Bob is there to provide a checkup from the neck up?
