Good players and a good group dynamic are so hard to find. When you do, hold on for dear life.
Our group has a great core, but life is...life. We are having a few people flake off due to corona shit. The worst part is do we run short or look for replacements? You know how annoying THAT can be.
I've been spoiled so much I've been avoiding the recruiting I should be doing.
...well one of us should. And I know if I don't it won't be done.

I have a que currently for my games. we've been using roll20. It's made people a lot better with attendance. Now with that ese others who hadn't played in awhile want in but 6 is cap for me. I've done up to 15 and screw that insanity.

The Vagrant Erudite |

Eh, of the 6 o us, 3 of us never miss a game. 2 players have been flaking a lot lately. Tala was our 6th but the Vagrant Infantite seems to choose the minute a game starts to want food, attention, and more...so she and I have to tag team who can make the games. As I do not make milk, she misses more often.
Also one player won't play anything less complicated than doing his taxes, and two of us, myself included, are getting burned out from overcomplicated heavy rules gamist railroad BS, so...heads have begun to butt.

i must suggest We are legion (we are Bob) and the rest of the Bobiverse series as a very good read. The audio books are also pretty good.

Players? No, I have family.
They say they'll play, but then they don't actually do the things you need to do to play, like make characters, or even look at the books.
I can make them, but then it's not any fun for me.
So I wait until human contact is allowed again (TBD) and I can try out this whole PFS thing I keep hearing about.

Pre-made character sheets maybe? I feel like though at that point if the interest isn't their no point to it yeah.

Tried that. They don't even read the character sheets.
And even if they do use them, they'll just complain about how they aren't the character they would have made.

We tried roll20. Very much meh.
Then we tried fantasy grounds. I was underwhelmed and did not want to rebuy ALL the rulebooks, but others find it palatable.
Now experimenting with a multiple camera view of physical table through goto meeting. It puts the rules//dice back in players hands and i will have to move minis but it will let me use my df setups and be better for me

This should have been obvious, but yesterday for the first time I did *not* write the room numbers on the map when preparing for our family game. (The end of book 5 of Ruins of Azlant takes place in a small wooded area with a handful of cabins scattered about.)
Which meant that they actually looked at the problem creatively, talked about tactics, and went from E1 to E4b, E3, E4a, then E2. And the session was so much more interesting.
Lesson learned.

I don't remember if the map we used had the buildings numbered or not, but basically just followed the path from E1, to E2, then over to E4 and E5, up to E3 and the other E4, then to E6 and E7. That's essentially how the map is laid out, so we followed it.
Also, it was only our 1st or 2nd time on Roll20, so we were all trying to get used to the interface and not stray too much so it was easier for the GM.

Man a group making a choice so that "it is easier for the DM" that bring a tear to my eye.
Oh, we do plenty to mess with her normally. But in this case she was struggling to figure out Roll20, so making things harder on her would only a) slow things down even more, and b) potentially make her decide that it wasn't worth messing with it and postpone the game until the COVID was under control.

** spoiler omitted **
So, more story why the rest is hard:
A few weeks back, the nephew texted us out of the blue, asking if he could stay with us. He's stayed with us before, but only during school vacations.
We said he could come. He only replied with 'I'm packing the last of my stuff then I'm taking the first bus your way'.
So he emediately came over.
We didnt ask him why he suddenly dicided. Coming from so much abuse, we figure its easier to just take him in. Any questions might form a barrier.
So the next day. On freaking facebook, we read that his mom has been taken into protective custody and her phone would be confiscated.
That was the message.
She did not text or call or mail her son.
Not that day.
Not the next day.
Or the next.
On saturday, nephew does a round of mail. He was adamant he'd do it. We then had to tell him, do you know what is going on back home. He did not know. We told him we only knew his mom was taken into protective custody. He was upset about this.
I was freaking furious she'd choose to tell facebook, but not her own son.
He later send het a few text, and a few hours later she finally called him.
Fast forward a few days later. We had vague hopes she had finally drawn a line in the sand. But of course now.
What had happened was that the boyfriend was acting up. Since nothing can be the mothers fault, and she always justifies the boyfriends behaviour, nephew was send to us.
Later the boyfriend still went apeshit. She and the youngest kid had hidden in the laundry room untill he stopped raging.
This had greatly upset the youngest kid, who the next day was out of sorts at school. The teachers had managed to pry the story out of her and called the authorities, after which the mother and the kid were taken in.
So now the mother is looking to move out of that house, and to a new city. Because she is finally done with the relationship (she was done two times before and took him back in again and again. This has been going on for years.
But new city means new school for nephew. We're also afraid if his mom suspects us of 'meddeling' she will manipulate nephew and we wont see him for a long time. Last time we tried, she cut off all ties and we did not see or hear from him again for over a year.

Oh see I play over discord and fantasy grounds.
I couldn't find a decent group without casting a net over four timezones.

"We'll play."
"Don't lie to me.""We will!"
"Prove it."
Drop book in front of them. Stare at them until they open and watch them read. Don't break eye contact until they start.
"Dad, this is creepy!"
"Creepy is the monster I'm gonna throw at you. This is hedging my bets. Also, if you quit or your characters die, you're grounded. Make sure you actually try."
"But dad that's not fair!"
"Not fair is making a campaign and all the work related to it and having your wife and kids flake on the work a player has. Now pick your stats or I'm giving your wizard a 12 int."
Don't do this unless you're prepared to give up getting laid for a while, unless you secretly tell the General she is exempt.

Their discussion went something like:
This big one that's right in front of us is obviously a trap. (E2, and with three C9 monsters when the PCs are 15th level, not a trap.) So clearly we cannot choose the lodge in front of us. So we're going to go check out this lodge that's immediately to our right (E4b) that we can see the wall of through the trees, since there's not really much undergrowth, and then skirt around E2 following the path to the smaller lodge just north of it (E3), then from there we'll check out this other small cabin that's immediately to the North (E4a), and then we'll circle back around through these woods on the western edge of the map and go up to the podium on the SW corner of the E2 porch.Whereupon the three cyclopes, who see WW's PC climb up onto the porch and stand at the podium and stare at the trees, immediately shoot at his hairy dwarven back through the curtained doorway. (His character is a Dwarf/Elephant Seal Selkie, so when he's on land, he's a hairy dwarf in hide boots and a loincloth. Luckily, he had cast Stoneskin right after they came through the portal.)

It's more work, but if you aren't already doing it you should also use "fog of war". Only give them as much of the map as their characters can actually see.
Telling them they can see a cabin wall through the trees is one thing, but having the entire open map in front of them will make it hard for them to not metagame.

I wasn't serious anyway. It was an attempt at humor.
A mediocre bordering on meh one.

Working through an interview. Just a small microcosm of how it went.
Me: "Ok, so a user calls in to say she's trying to change her password--"
Interviewee: "Ok, so what we're going to do is--"
Me: "I'm sorry, are you going to listen to what the actual issue is, or just talk over the user like you just did to the person who is trying to decide if you are right for the position you applied for?"
His resume says he is punctual, self-confident, and keen to learn. Two of those were actually correct.

Video interview.
That wasn't the only problem, but it was the third time he cut off the person trying to set up a troubleshooting scenario for him.
Other issues included answers like "reinstall the software" when you just have to click a checkbox. I'm looking for thought process - most issues that get called in are not difficult and usually caused by the user themselves.
Best example - someone accidentally hides the control ribbon in Excel or Word. There's just a little carat in the upper right to click on to unhide that ribbon. He wanted to completely reinstall Office to fix it instead. He stuck to that even after I asked if there were any other options to try before reinstalling. "No. You just have to reinstall the entire Office suite." That's someone I don't want on my team. I'll end up spending more time fixing whatever they "fix", and field too many complaints.

O I know. But this seems intentional.
Many times a cable company will not mark its lines when you do a 'call before you dig' request because given the number of calls, it is cheaper for them to repair the few that get cut instead of pay someone to go out and spray paint the line.
But recently ATT has been good about marking their lines because they don't want people to lose service and complain in the era of work from home.

Yeah, that's different. If it's marked, there's a lot less "accident" involved, and you have to look more at "incompetent" and/or "malicious".
But I also wouldn't put it past ATT to not send some people out in Google-marked vehicles and clothes and cut their own lines. I really wouldn't be surprised at that.
