Have you ever read all of Foundation?

I keep meaning to.
The problem is, I accidentally bought the fifth and final book at a garage sale when I was a kid and read it, and ever since, I've been unable to start it properly from the beginning.

I read one or two of them long ago. I remember liking them, but I don't remember much about them...

I (and LisaMarlene) particularly enjoy 'The Phoenix Guards' and the books that follow it (500 Years After, and 'The Viscount of Adrilankha' (sp?)).

However, you might not like them so well if you are not also fond of Dumas. If you do, trying some of Pierre Prevel's novels might also be to your taste, though I haven't read many of those.

Brust's Vlad Taltos books are great too - they start off as hard-boiled fantasy crime fiction (not detective stories, really), then get odder as the series continues, in a good way.

<Aged Wizard enters thread>

Hi guys! Long time no see!

I like Stephen Brust very much, His Taltos series is awesome, it has 1 or 2 questionable works in the middle, (I think he was in a rough patch?) but pick back up again very nicely. AND they flow seamlessly into the Phoenix Guards saga. (Same world) SOme of the characters even make guest appearances in the other series. :)

I have to agree that you will enjoy them better if you enjoy Dumas-style swashbuckling. I have always thought that some of these novels would make excellent movies.

Happy Weekend to all!

<Aged Wizard exits thread,...>

Brust's blog and whathaveyou is here, too. He is a Trotskyite of some description, so there is quite a bit of P*l*t*cs on it.

The thing that gets to me about things like that is the financial math involved.

Math:
Unless they're paying out-of-pocket ready cash, that's a $5000/month mortgage, then $2 million to build their 5-unit apartment building (another $10,000/month mortgage), then around $2000/month in property taxes. So their bare outlay not including insurance would be around $17,000/month. Dividing by 5, you get that they have to charge $3400/month per apartment just to break even.

Rents are insane around here, and the house is right next to a park, but $3400/month seems like a ludicrously optimistic rent estimate.

(It's why we haven't tried to buy any houses around here as rentals: Prices are so steep that if you don't have cash on hand, the mortgages are prohibitive... meaning that only investors with ready cash buy houses, and they love to bid against one another, explaining house prices around here.)

Yeah, that's usually just someone being told by a friend that something embarrassing was happening and they sent Google a "take that down" order. I know that if you went to Memorial Park (corner of Carmel and Portland in Albany), they took the picture while my father was walking the Impii across the street, and he got uppity and made them take it down, so for a while if you went to that intersection on Google maps and then tried to look west down Portland it was blurred out. It's been a while, though, so I suspect it's fixed by now. He did die over a dozen years ago now...

EDIT: Point Aiymi to this.

I went to my mailbox today. It was an ordinary day.

There was a package in my mailbox. I thought it was long awaited licorice from the Netherlands, but it was from amazon.

I didn't order anything from amazon.

I walked with the package to the store and almost forgot it was under my arm when I paid for groceries. I was gonna make pasta tonight.

I went back home with the amazon package in my bag. I was reading the new Tie Fighter comic because there were supposed to be pictures of the pilots from the new Alphabet Squadron in it. There was a picture of an X-Wing pilot. A picture of a B- wing pilot. A picture of an A-Wing pilot. A picture of a U-Wing pilot.

No picture of a Y-Wing pilot.

Hmph.

I put my pasta on as I has just finished cooking my meat and my sauce and wanted them to rest. I figured I had that a little backwards as the pasta should have been cooking this whole time but ah well. I had a mystery to solve. What did I get from Amazon? I fished out the box out of the grocery bag, almost forgotten on the kitchen table.

I opened the Amazon box.

I was not prepared for what was inside.

IT IS THE MATTE BLACK PILOT VANISHING POINT FOUNTAIN PEN STUB NIB

HOLY SHIT

HOLY SHIT

I WAS PUTTING MONEY ASIDE FOR IT ELECTRONICALLY JUST EARLIER TODAY

I PUT IT ON MY SECRET SANTA LIST WITH MY CHRISTMAS FRIENDS AS A JOKE(the 30 dollar limit is seriously enforced).

I started CRYING I was freaking out so bad.

I paced up and down my entire house because HOLY SHIT

I showed my friends from the secret Santa list and they all congratulated me but were confused as hell. They kinda thought I listed it as a joke. None of them got it for me, I don't think.

I OVERCOOKED MY PASTA DINNER TURNING IT INTO MUSH BECAUSE I WAS SO FREAKED OUT

I am now making old standby spaghetti with sauce that wont match it because I ALMOST BURNED THE BOTTOM OF MY POT I FORGOT I WAS COOKING BECAUSE I AM STILL FREAKED OUT

I had a shopping success.

After all the crap I went through with Eve this summer, now we're just in the past few weeks back to the place where she's treating me like I'm her best friend and nothing happened (yes, she's a single mom taking 16 graduate credit hours this term while also taking care of a smart, willful, and molar-teething toddler, so she can be excused for part of her psychofreakishb*#@~osity, but honestly, part of it is just Eve). And, no, she never apologized.
And it's her 42nd birthday on Monday.

She doesn't want either edible or wearable gifts (don't EVEN, Freehold)
Which severely limits the field.
And it has to fit into my offensively small budget.
And she's picky.

Back on the border of Berkeley and Albany, there used to be this amazing store called The Bone Room. You could buy everything from a real scorpion embedded in amber-colored lucite, in a bracelet (I bought one for Hermione at her request when she was four, because they were like six bucks, and she still wears it) to a coyote skull to a real (not a cast or a replica) human skeleton. Also any type of mounted bug or butterfly you can imagine in neat little shadow boxes. Everyone from science teachers to Burning Man denizens working on their costumes to the randomly curious shopped there, and it was a *fantastic* place to get gifts for Eve. But then it closed, and then we moved.

BUT, we happen to have a store in the neighborhood near school that's... well, sort of like a cross between The Bone Room and a joint garage sale between a disreputable mortuary, a blind taxidermist, and an old lady's attic. They pick up things secondhand, they get some things from local artisans, and I'm sure they just pick a few items up off the side of the highway. The kids and I had a *lot* of fun browsing. And Hermione found a small snowy owl hand-carved from quartz, mounted on a block of celestite. And the guy behind the counter gave us 10% off, I think because the kids were so into the shop and were asking good questions and not being goblins.

Ninja power is inversely related to their proportional ratio.

1 Ninja vs 1000 other warriors = Ninja win

1000 Ninjas vs 1 man = Ninja loss

This is my theorem of ninja power ratios.
