Aaaaand... apparently yet another "Only in California™" thing. Or maybe even an, "Only in NobodysHome's Puny Mind™" thing:
"Yay! We have ants!"
We have the ridiculously-innocuous Argentine ant: It does not bite (enough to notice), it does not cause property damage; it doesn't do much of anything other than wander your house in search of food.
And since we clean and mop the house twice a month, they just don't come inside at all... unless there's major rain coming. They're the very best predictor of a drought/non-drought season I've seen.
And we have had... ZERO ants in the house at all this year. So seeing ants start to make little forays into the house cheers me no end, because it means rain is coming in some quantity.
Now, I'd be a lot happier if our roofer had actually come and fixed our roof, but with money fairly tight at the moment, I'm happy enough to wait until February or March to get that done by a different roofer.
EDIT: Typical old man syndrome. Pay attention to the roof and the basement gets exposed...

Wow, so much to comment on.
1) I'm with Orthos re politics and religion seemingly coming in a bundle sucks. I also hate bundled politics in general, but I won't go off on that 'cause FaWtL.
2) "Do this because I said so" tends to be the last result of a mediocre parent grasping at straws. Heaven forbid we offer free classes on parenting or anything.
3) Haha, Freehold's butt hurts. Insert witty commentary here.
4) Sympathy for gran. Clients suck.
5) Tac's faith kinda pointedly says in it's book of guidelines that wearing said faith on your sleeve is somewhere between a flat out rule and a strong recommendation. So I don't blame him.
6) Yay for working Impuses...Impi?

If you're talking about the new Star Trek the problem with it is Seth McFarlane is doing a better job with it then Star Trek is.
FYI: new season of The Orville starts soon! (December 28th on TV, December 29th on Hulu).
Nope. I've not seen the "newest" Star Trek. EDIT: I have seen advertisements, but I have no idea what the whole "red angel" business is about. No, Star Trek: Enterprise is from back in 2005 (and that link is to Wikipedia talking about the show).
The Orville was kind of okay - all one episode I could watch of it (before it demanded I sign up for Hulu; no problem with Hulu, but I can't afford that, right now, so... nope!)

I have mildly regretted nearly exterminating our sugar ants - they rarely (if ever) entered the house, and, though the new ones seem about as concientious, they can certainly bite harder. I don't think they have, much, but given we seem to have replaced the relatively benign sugar ants with slightly-more-dangerous (and bigger) ants in our yard... the sugar ants were better.
That said, I'm mildly proud to have apparently cleaned our oak tree in the front yard of ants without killing it. I didn't know if that would happen.

Look, all I'm saying, is that if faith is like underwear, I've got a Superman complex and also am wearing longjohns (even though I live in Florida and am wearing shorts* and t-shirts every daggum day I can).

I dont care for the orville. It was billed as a comedy and it definitely is not. I dont find it very star trek-y either, more of a sendup of seth mcfarlanes favorite star trek episodes with different makeup.

The issue is, they didn't recognize that the converse should be barred as well: "Established religion shall make no law" or some such, where if you're a certified tax-free organized religion, you can't make political donations nor buy political ads.
Politics shouldn't be involved in churches. Churches shouldn't be involved in politics. IMHO.

as a very young man/child, I had an excellent teacher who insisted on running current events weekly. There were some parents who felt she was wrongheaded(there was an issue with newspaper/magazine subscription prices at the time) but she demanded that we get two articles a week, one pro and one con on an issue.

One, most religious people in my area, including my family and the church we attend, have bought into the restructuring if history that says the Founding Fathers were all devout Christian men who based their laws and new country on scripture.
Two, the amount of prayers and sermons specifically requesting more theologically-based interpretations of law and new laws amd edicts that are "more faithful to God's law" have increased dramatically over the past ten years.
Two point five, this dovetails with an increased xenophobia and hostility to outsiders of all stripes. This is a direct quote from a prayer from a recent service: "We know there are people coming to our country for the single purpose of changing the way we worship, the way we live, the way we govern."
Three, the overt, shameless jingoism and unmitigated mockery of anyone who dares to think or say anything to disparage our country or its "proper" leadership has reached levels I have never personally before experienced and have little historical context to compare to. Casual conversation and sermons alike are devoted to mocking and "correcting" anyone who might harbor even the tiniest inkling that capitalism isn't a perfect system. (We had a full sermon completely devoted to socialism and anything that borrowed even slightly from it being evil. I kid you not - i can link it to you, if they've uploaded it to their site.)
And four, the relentless, bizarre, and slavish supporting of a serial philanderer, liar, con artist, glutton, fornicator, thief, cheat, and conspiracy peddler in what is supposed to be a religion preaching truth, chastity, loyalty, spousal fidelity to the point of banning divorce for all but one reason, marital integrity, severe restraint, and overwhelming self control. "But at least a Democrat didn't win!" Gag me.

The main reason this all frustrates me so much is I can't object to it. I'm currently stuck living with my parents, who are leaders in the congregation and 100% on board with everything in the spoiler. If I speak out with my complaints, I risk losing that roof over my head.
Until I'm in a situation I can leave and support myself, I have to endure all this three times a week, plus whenever one of my parents gets ranty.

I try to make the best of it. I've actually already gotten a lot of improvement (and more work for myself, but worth it).
When they offered me half and half rather than just English, I asked if we could add economics - since we were also adding financial literacy as a graduation requirement. It dovetailed nicely, so instead of having four sections of current events, I had two.
At the end of last year, I pushed to add two more electives - one on historical foundations/interpretations of the Constitution and one on US history post-WWII. They agreed, so I have one section of each elective. I can totally work with 1/4 of the originally-intended load of that class.
I like that we've got more options for the kids to get their social studies credits rounded out, and while I still have to teach a class I'm not super enthused about, I've got a lot more flexibility in not going insane.
We've got a magazine subscription that I use twice a week, a current events site I use the other three days, and every other week, I take two days for a socratic seminar (one day for prep and another for the actual discussion).

I love that so much I actually DID it back when I was a teacher: "Choose a topic. Find an article that supports your point of view. Find an article that opposes it. Now parse each article for accuracy. Which one is more reliable?"

But yeah, the stereotypical Southern Baptist dyed-in-the-wool, "If you question anything we say you're going to Hell" types? I am happy that I am thousands of miles away from them.
It's an incredibly sticky situation in that there's a ton of things built into the system to make it all but impossible to escape unscathed. Even if you're not turning your back on the whole faith, even leaving a single congregation is immensely difficult and fraught with complications and guilt tripping.

I'm trying to get myself back in the habit of writing when I can, but I've got a lot of stories to focus on, and ADHD keeps kicking in, and since it worked for Orthos a few pages back, may as well toss in my projects. Which should I prioritize?
1. Mother-daughter relationship story involving lots of fey magic
2. Somewhat amoral entrepreneur's crew tries to clean up after various cunning plans
3. Urban fantasy involving the shattered masquerade
I'll vote for (2), it intrigues me most.

2 is middling fantasy (there's plenty of magic in the world, but only one of the cast actually has any worth speaking of). Sort of heist.
3 is a sort of dual narrative with the A plot being largely focused on handling the integration of magic into daily life (One of the main POV character's job is working out school accommodations for fey-blooded kids, for example) with the B plot telling in flashback how we got here.

Until I'm in a situation I can leave and support myself, I have to endure all this three times a week, plus whenever one of my parents gets ranty.
(Some churches like to take the "don't forsake the assembling of yourselves" quote - that exists in ONE spot - as an excuse/command, which really literally only means "remember to have actual Christian friends that you get together with occasionally," considering at the time that was written, Christianity was considered a heresy and there were no churches, aside from, the church, or the body of believers.)
Also, it's no wonder children of strongly devout believers tend to rebound so heavily in the other direction. Out of pure contrariness, if I were in that situation, the very MINUTE I moved out, I would rub it in the faces of my parents that not only would I be leaving said uber-right-wing conservative church, but I would, because they made me attend make sure to not go to church for a solid year, bare minimum. I would make sure to emphatically point out the very reason was because they made me, and call up and leave messages for the first few Sundays like "Hey, mom, dad, guess what I'm not doing today. Guess why."
There's plenty of great preachers on YouTube and other medium who aren't political puppets, if you still wanna get your word on.
In the meantime, you could always find scriptures and stuff that support the left wing, like, you know, Love Your Neighbor as Yourself, (f~&&ing duh) and the like, and reply snarkily with the direct quote.
