So Hermione's favorite "Coco" movie high-tops fell apart during before-school yard time today. Actually fell apart in lots of pieces. She's had them three months. (Licensed sneakers from Sears = CRAP.)
She begged and begged for high-top pink Converse to replace them.
And, after a little online reconn, guess who's got the best price?
Not Amazon.
Not Walmart.
Not Zappos. (Just like it's never Lupus, it's never Zappos either.)
Not Kohl's.
The actual Converse online store. Plus a 15% off first-time coupon, plus free shipping if you sign up for their email list. (Yes, I'm going to unsubscribe as soon as they ship.)
They're still too damned much money, but I'd rather buy a $28 pair of shoes that will last half a year than a $14 pair that will be trash in a month and a half like I usually do.

Impus Major and his friends are attempting to go as the "complete" set of Disney princesses for Halloween this year.

Impus Major? Snow White, of course...

For those following Serpent's Skull:
- Talky = Esmerelda (NOT A PRINCESS, goldarn it!)
- Li'l Hipster = Rapunzel (NOT A PRINCESS! Aaaaaargh!)
- Girl who Stole My Last Name = Moana (OK, maybe on a technicality), which is sad, because she'd make an awesome Maui, and even has his hair...

Rapunzel's a princess.

Spoiler:
She's the missing princess they hold the lights festival to guide home every year.

Oh gods do I feel you there!

We tried on multiple occasions to "save" money by buying the kids shoes from Target.
Once we'd burned through about a half dozen pairs of under-$30 pairs in barely over a year, we started taking them to the Vans store for $45 shoes. And those tend to last 12-18 months. Still ridiculously short for a pair of shoes, but if you do the dollar-per-month calculation, the Vans are a MUCH better bargain.

(This time we're trying Impus Minor out on New Balances, my go-to shoes, but the last time I bought a pair of pairs they only lasted about 2 years, so even NB seems to be going down the, "Drop the quality and rely on your brand name" slippery slope...)

Hi, Kjel! Doing okay?

I manage I guess…

Still having a lot of mood-swings, though I most think this is due to workplace stress.
A co-worker got injured during riding (horse tossed him, and he hit his head on a horse-shed on the way down) and had to be rushed to the local hospital. And yes the idiot hasn't wearing his helmet, and yes he could only get away with that due to working at a private-run horse-breeder (back at the race track, it was fineable to mount a horse without a helmet).
Last I heard though, he got "lucky" and got off with a concussion and a huge bump on his head.
So we've had to pick up the slack from a lacking co-worker, and the boss has refused to slow down the work pace (a female co-worker have also left us for greener pastues)...

Its even bleed into my gaming, in that I've had to cancel last weeks gaming, as i was tired, moody and snippy with other people.

So all in all I've had a very busy and somewhat stressful couple of weeks.

Yeah I can attest it's a bad idea to game while testy. At least that co-worker of yours got off lightly and without permanent damage.

My shoes don't last more then 2 years, but what kind of abuse is impus major putting them through? Few months have to change a pair? I know I got a pair of "addidas" shoes from Vietnam, they're still usable, if fraying at the edges, and my Dad had to patch my Nike shoes with glue.

I do take my shoes out for jogs and walks up mount Faber, though.

I've already gone through two pairs of shoes this summer with another pair nearly done for.

Seriously Torani?
(1) Got the Torani syrup (cinnamon, 'cause NobodysWife wants cinnamon coffee in the morning)
(2) Got the Torani-branded syrup pump
(3) Opened the syrup and put in the pump
(4) Syrup overflowed all over the counter.

If you know how full you make your bottles, then shouldn't you have a concept as to how big to make your pumps?

Grrr....

(Honestly, it was less than 1 tsp lost, but just, "Our stuff that's designed to work together doesn't quite do that," is always annoying.)

There's nothing quite so gratifying as being recognized by a cat.

As most of you know, I work from home, so I spend a good portion of every day cleaning the house, doing dishes, doing laundry, stretching, doing pushups and situps, and so forth. (I work 6:30 am - 4:00 pm, but if you include all the stuff I'm doing while I'm working it works out to around 30-35 hours a week.)
So our calico spends most of the day sleeping in the house around me, and has learned an absolute trust in me that's kind of scary. I'll tip something over or trip over something, and she just looks at me knowing full well that I'll catch it or dive sideways and she will never be touched. She doesn't worry about getting out of my way for anything.

I thought it might just be her personality, but the kids are now home. I started coming out of the kitchen just as she was crossing the path. Her back arched up and she started darting to the side as she looked back to see who it was. The moment she saw me, total relaxation, stopped trying to avoid me, and just continued her walk.

One of these days I'm going to fail to catch something I've just dropped. And she's going to be very, very angry with me...

The term I learned from my mother is planned obsolescence.

Sell a pair of shoes that last five years, and you might be out of business before the happy customer needs another pair. But sell a pair that lasts one year or not even, and customers will complain...but you'll sell shoes anyway, and a lot more frequently.

Seems like a good time to recommend some anime!

It's only 12 episodes, but Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a delightfully grim surprise.

The cover and splash page artwork makes it look like just yet another in the infinite line of, "Young awkward middle school girls can become Magic Girls (TM)".
But from the moment the first scene starts with ominous music and a dark, abstract art style you say, "Huh? Maybe this might be different."

By episode 3, things start getting dark.
By episode 10, you are thinking, "OMG, this is SOOOOOOOO beyond ****ed up!"

And it is a complete series with no hooks or gotchas or, "This is how we're going to fit in the next season" bits.

Nice series. I highly recommend it if you're into a darker twist on the whole "magic girls" thing.

Madoka Magica is an instant classic. Forget the series, watch the movie, which is a rare thing for me to say.

Also, the H is good.

Can you link me the movie you're talking about?

The *one* movie we found was on Netflix but isn't any more, and it looks like they "movified" the series and did separate movies, so there's all kinds of confusion as to what I'm supposed to watch.

At this point I'd be happy to order the darned DVD from someone just to get the revenue stream on it up high enough to get it put back on streaming services. Even Amazon Prime video doesn't have it, and that's rare.

EDIT: I don't know whether Amazon search links work, but if I search Amazon I get this incomprehensible mess.

So um...

My gf and I scrapped the last of our money and we can just barely pay rent this month.

Otoh we found out (via a phone interview for me and nepotism for ner) we both have jobs waiting for us in Ohio.

So do I use our last 850 to pay rent...

...or say f~%+ my credit, dip out on my lease, and use our last 850 to leave Florida a few months early to move to Athens, Ohio? The hard part is finding a place to stay with so little. Rent is way cheap (850 here would be like 600 there) but we don't have 1st/last/security etc.

I mean if we scrape and stay we have a month to figure s##! out...but we won't have that 850 to leave if we don't find jobs by then down here. So...do we risk now or risk later?

*sigh* My credit is already taking a dive bomb since I haven't made scooter or credit card payments in a few months. My ex was the reason it was ever good. So I guess another hit to GTFO and have a real job (IN my graduating field no less, it's a disabled folks home and my psych degree would actually be useful).

I dunno. Opinions?

Good luck with whatever you decide upon.

I'm personally all about letting go of old erronous ways for new improved and better ways of doing things but life is about balance and just jumping on every single fade and diet that comes out it not only costly but potentially dangerous (heck the cabbage water diet in the I think 80's straight up killed people and drove others to suicide including the inventor). Have to find that balance between hard-headedness and (whats the opposite of that?) being overly flaky.

Their Biggest Mistake

There is something to be said for being borderline obsessive-compulsive, especially with regards to paperwork.

After 3 years of having 7 classes per semester, Impus Major is finally relaxing in his senior year and only has 5 classes. He managed to avoid having a 1st period, which lets him laze around in the morning (I still make him wake up to fit my schedule), but then he's missing a dead-center-of-the-day 4th period. He tried to come home today and got busted for it. (The school is closed campus except for lunch, which happens to be... right after 4th period.)

So, not being one to not try to fight the power, I called the attendance office. The assistant was terrified by my question, and forwarded me on to the main attendance clerk. She said that I couldn't do it without formal permission from the vice principal, so I'd have to write a formal letter justifying his excusal, and she seemed like she doubted I'd follow through.

I told NobodysWife that I had to write a formal letter to the school requesting that Impus Major be allowed off campus during 4th period.

She couldn't stop laughing.

The vice principal is doomed to accede to my request; she just doesn't know it yet...

I still have trouble wrapping my head around the idea of high school kids having free periods. At the school I went to, you had to have all 7 periods filled. The closest you got to a "free" period was study hall, which wasn't all that free since you were still required to be there, were not allowed to talk to people unless it was quietly and for schoolwork, and could not sleep. If you weren't there, it counted as an absence just like missing a regular class. And you couldn't have more than 1 per day, unless you were playing a sport (and then only during the season). So, yeah, I wound up taking several classes I didn't need, or even want, just because I had to fill the schedule and I hated taking study hall. I would rather take a class I had no interest in and do my work at home than sit through study hall.

I buy the $15 shoes at Walmart. They usually last me about 6 months before I buy a new pair (although realistically, I should probably throw them out after 3). The best pair of shoes I ever had was a pair of Skechers. They lasted me 4 years. So I bought a new pair of Skechers to replace them, and they lasted 2 months. So I gave up on them and started buying really cheap shoes and wearing them far longer than they should be.

I had a free period my senior year in high school I could of had 2 if I hadn't of failed Spanish twice.

Credit can be rebuilt. Regrets... not so much.

The best decision I ever made was to walk away from a tenure-track position where I was utterly miserable and suffering stress-related health issues. I walked away with no job prospects, nothing but an academic background, in May when the Fall openings were long-since closed.

We figured we had 3 months for me to find at least part-time work or we'd lose our home.

It was still the best decision I ever made.

Otoh we found out (via a phone interview for me and nepotism for ner) we both have jobs waiting for us in Ohio.

So do I use our last 850 to pay rent...

...or say f~!+ my credit, dip out on my lease, and use our last 850 to leave Florida a few months early to move to Athens, Ohio? The hard part is finding a place to stay with so little. Rent is way cheap (850 here would be like 600 there) but we don't have 1st/last/security etc.

I mean if we scrape and stay we have a month to figure s$%+ out...but we won't have that 850 to leave if we don't find jobs by then down here.

I dunno. Opinions?

Credit can be rebuilt.

Jinx!

The only thing I can say about it is:
"I'm not a fan of my own problems."

RIP Sunny. You were such a good boy and a good friend to me, my wife, her BF, and all the dogs. You will be missed. I love you my little face licker. May you be in a better place, Biscuit # 3. Biscuits # 1, 2, and 4 will miss you. I know I will.

Sunny died at around 7:30 am on Monday, 9-24-2018. The vet tried their best to save him.

Edit - Sunny was a 20 pound tanish dachshund mix who was around 4 or 5 years old.

Ouch. So sorry. Do you mind saying what happened to him? 4 or 5 seems awfully young...

~shrugs~ Not really. The vet thinks that he got ahold of something that caused his issues. He was chewing on some cords and he liked to sample all sorts of things. The wife thinks that he has been having issues for a few weeks and they just went all out on Saturday when he became very lethargic and then had some seizures. Sadly, dogs can't tell us what is wrong with them.

I would guess maybe he got hit by a vehicle?

Possible self induced poisoning due to eating the wrong thing. It might have also been a bug or cancer in the brain. No real idea.

Geez. Sorry. That truly sucks.

Sharoth my deepest condolences. I know how close you were to sunny, and it is monstrously unfair for death to take such a young dog. I pray they rest peacefully.

Thanks. I do appreciate it.

On the plus side, We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis Taylor has been a very fun book so far. I am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series.

And to add injury to insult, the final vet bill for Sunny's care was almost $1080. I was able to borrow the money, but I have to repay it. So that is another bill on top of my already tight budget. yay. However, it was worth it to give Sunny a chance. Plus they allowed us another chance to say goodbye to him before he passed away.

Sorry to hear about that, Sharoth - RIP Sunny.
