NobodysHome's Rant of the Day (TM)
Some days, I just feel glad that I'm getting so long in the tooth that I may not survive to see the dystopian society we are hurtling towards. Other times I realize we are already so close as to be essentially there.Today's Topic: Cheese.
I should have known cheese would have lead to the downfall of humanity. It tastes too damn good.
Now, while Safeway brand is inedible in all its forms, Tillamook isn't bad... for cooking. I actually prefer it if I'm making a dish containing COOKED cheese.
Much like Freehold, Tillamook is too young and hard to be eaten raw, and our Sunday game is raw cheddar with apples.
A prophylactic should be used before attempting to eat me, yes. Practice safe oral pursuits.

You were in danger?Thsnkfully no, but there was an active shooter a couple of miles away so I thought I'd let you all know none of us were in any danger.
I'm damn glad are safe, heres hoping everyone else is too.

There are things that my beloved local corner store doesn't carry: Low-sugar peanut butter and bread that Impus Minor considers edible being two of them. (I swear; the corner store has a 6'x6' area dedicated to bread, but it's all "nutty" bread or "whole grain, grains included" bread or "bread so flavorful you don't need a filling" bread. Y'know, SOME people actually like bread that isn't full of crunchy bits, and that doesn't overwhelm the flavor of anything else in your sandwich. Go figure.)
I figured as long as I was at Safeway, I'd pick up some cheese for myself and the gamers. Safeway had a nice roughly 5'x6' rack of assorted cheeses... ALL either Safeway brand or Tillamook. There were NO other choices.
Now, while Safeway brand is inedible in all its forms, Tillamook isn't bad... for cooking. I actually prefer it if I'm making a dish containing COOKED cheese.
Much like Freehold, Tillamook is too young and hard to be eaten raw, and our Sunday game is raw cheddar with apples.So no cheddar for me today, and I'll need to go to the corner store later this week. Because in a massive display containing hundreds of pounds of cheese, Safeway couldn't find any room for ANY other brands than its own, except for Tillamook.
And I suspect the Tillamook will go by the wayside soon enough...
This made me stop to wonder if any of the stores that I shop at have this same issue....and then I remembered that I live in the midwest. We take our cheese very seriously, and I'm pretty sure no store would dare pull this stunt for fear of rioting. ;P

Safeway bought them out (so there are now two Safeways within half a mile of each other, plus a third another mile up the same road), and assured all the offended high-end shoppers that they would continue to cater to the high-end, high-profit niche.
Nope.
Andronico's old amazing cheese selection is now over half Safeway Select. And gods, if you think Kraft Mild Cheddar is bad, you've never tried Safeway Select *anything*.
I am procrastinating on so many different things right now, I think I might actually be procrastinating my procrastinating....
Hey, as of yesterday my due dates are in November so I get to be fairly lax.
I'm sure tomorrow they'll pull them back into October and I'll be in a panic again.

I KNOW I've tiraded about this one before, so I don't think it counts, but gods, the whole, "Hey, everybody! There's a public vote on the best new science project/implementation/kids' beauty pageant/whatever! I really want to win, so everyone please click this link and vote for me!"
Either I'm going to go to the base site, evaluate ALL of the entries, and honestly vote for the one that I feel is the best, or I'm not going to waste my time.
Don't ask me to be a dishonest scumbag and commit voter fraud on your behalf. (OK; a strong term, but still, I'm "voting" for something just because my co-worker told me to. Pretty sleazy, if you ask me...)
(This one was corporate-wide, so over 100,000 employees asked to vote for something. Considering it's a small tech faire in Africa, I sure as h*** hope the judges will recognize the voter fraud for what it is.)

So, understand that EVERY programming language has a function that converts all letters to uppercase. So there was absolutely, 100% NO excuse for the programmer to be that lazy. It would have taken him or her LESS time to uppercase whatever I entered than it would have to write that error message.
Lazy programmers drive me nuts.

Then NobodysWife made me read the lyrics and read the story behind the song.
Now I tear up every time I hear it.

Mild cheddars and american is ok in my tomato soup, but otherwise I have no use for them. I dislike lasagna purely because of the ricotta, I will pick the noodles out if it's the only thing to eat. I have a limited tolerance for brie, especially the rind. Yech.
Adds derby, stilton, manchego, emmenthal, yarg, and asiago to bucket list...

I'm usually pretty darned Lawful, but I refuse to comply with Lawful Stupid.
I was running a class at an on-site facility with a union contract. The company was paying $1000 an hour for my time. That's not a typo. These were hard-core real-time engineering classes for defense and aerospace contractors. Whoever had set up the classroom put the easel with the sketchpad that I needed (they didn't have whiteboards) right in front of the screen. So I tried to move it.
And everyone in the class hissed at me, and told me that I wasn't allowed to move it, and I'd get written up, because all moving of equipment was required to be done by a union employee.
So I asked how long that would take.
And they said one of them would have to call in, file a formal request to have the easel moved, wait for someone to become available, have the person come over, move the easel to the location I wanted, and then I and the employee would have to sign off that the easel had been moved properly.
Maybe 45 minutes.
I moved the easel myself. I figured the fine would be under $750.

Surprisingly, I'm not a cheese hipster, I like cheese on or with certain things but I'm not eating cheese straight.
I'll eat brie on occasion, but I always regret it.
Oh, and cream cheese, cream cheese icing, and cheesecake are important to.

I'm what's called a gastronomical contrarian.
I'm generally not a fan of regional foods.
I lived five years in Seattle without having a single cup of coffee and only trying one piece of salmon.
I've lived in Wisconsin for 32 years, off and on, and I can't stand bratwurst or beer.

Never had Tillamook, but apparently our local supermarket chain, Publix, carries it. How would you compare it to say Cabot or Sargento?
Sargento's cheddar is edible, but not inspiring. Cabot's Seriously Sharp and Extra Sharp are my gotos for anything requiring cheddar in a meal, and their New York Sharp is my preferred for raw snacking. Surprisingly, our other local chain, Winn-Dixie, offers their own SE Grocers sharp cheddar which is pretty good sharp cheddar (better than Sargentos and Kraft).
Never had Safeway cheese, but Borden's cheese is an inedible rubberized orange compound that can be heat-tempered and extruded to form orange highway safety cones.

Cabot's Seriously Sharp and Extra Sharp are my gotos for anything requiring cheddar in a meal, and their New York Sharp is my preferred for raw snacking. Imagine Borden's except less edible and quite possibly actual plastic instead of cheese and you almost have how gross Safeway cheese is.
