I'm a standard Midwestern fat man. I was 4 when Granddad put a rare NY Strip in front of me for dinner. He absolutely refused to cook a steak beyond medium-rare.

EDIT: And I'm apparently a naked standard Midwestern fat man.

I personally think that American (and Australian) food tends to be mostly deep fried, combine that with super-sized servings…and coke being cheaper then water, yeah that’s one way to get fat. Not to mention that some months, outdoor physical activity isn’t possible.

Due to public transport being the way it is, most people drive to work and everywhere else, which cuts down the amount of physical activity they get. Public transport in Singapore wouldn’t get right at your workplace, you’d still have to walk to train station/bus stop.

So I suppose in America, if you weren’t taking active steps to prevent it, it’s fairly easy to put on weight…

But in Australia, I know a crazy auzzie who walks 20 mins to work everyday.

Oh and getting overweight puts extra strain on your knees(especially when you get older), which makes you not want to get out even more to exercise.

Is this considered as political? *scratches head*

On the one hand, that's a pretty general stereotype for such a huge country. On the other,

  • Yes, Coke is cheaper than water pretty much everywhere you go, and
  • Yes, a large portion of the country considers deep frying an art.

  • As for portion sizes, it's pretty scary how much they vary. In Albany, Berkeley, and San Francisco, if you go to a steak house you can expect steaks ranging from a 6 ounce filet mignon (about 175 grams) to a 14-ounce prime rib (roughly 400g); all perfectly reasonable. Yet when Shiro took us to a steak house in Fremont, barely 50 km south of us, the smallest steak you could get was 500g, and the prime rib weighed in at a whopping 48 oz (1.5 kg), with a notice on the menu that, "No, we do not serve smaller portions, as we cook on the bone to ensure quality."

It would have been a far more believable lie if they hadn't served my "medium rare" prime rib well past medium well and into well.

And Fremont is home to Claim Jumper, where even the salads

    ...

Yeah 100 g of steak or so. like this with those sides.

According to food panda the regular version is 130 g, which means the express version, which is cheaper, is even smaller. So 100g was probably a good estimate.

I'm beginning to suspect that people (^gasp*) might not share their correct ages on the threads.

I'm sure that Haladir was one of the few people on the boards older than me. But then he recently posted that he was about to turn 50, making him over a year younger.

    Because it's Milwaukee.

Zelda and I are taking the two younger ones and meeting up with her family. It's where Zelda grew up.

This trip has been a logistics snafu since the beginning. Zelda's beast of burden (SUV) should not be used for that distance. The suspension is about to break in half and there's a rusted hole in the engine block. It needs to be put out to pasture, but she has to keep it limping along for a bit longer.

So Aiymi and I offered up her Mazda, which comfortably seats 4. Seating 5 is possible, but I wouldn't recommend it for any trip over an hour.

Zelda's eldest said, "Yeah, I'll go. Certainly." Which meant Zelda and the kids were going to in our car. Then as of yesterday the eldest backed out as we were getting the cars switched over. So switch them back, and now I'm driving my Subaru instead (same seating issue - fine for 4, 5 is only doable for short distances).

Of course, since Aiymi's mom still isn't going back to Texas for another week, Aiymi is staying behind so that her mom isn't puttering around the house by herself all weekend.

    RE: Steak Serving Sizes

    1) My go-to: 18 oz ribeye (510g)
    2) Hungry time: 24 oz whatever (680g)

And, yes -- I'll have the soup (bowl, not cup), the salad, and the sides, thank you.

Though I've slowed down in the last five years, especially, my appetite is still the stuff of legend in my social circle.

Anecdote #1) Many moons ago the Subway chain was offering the Asiago Chicken Caesar sandwich (the year 2000, I think?). While on a Bible college road trip, I shocked my companions by ordering two footlongs, and then finishing a third before they completed their meals. At which time I was in line getting the fourth for the road . . . and it was devoured within 10 minutes of leaving the parking lot.

Anecdote #2) Quiznos -- ahhhh, the Black Angus sandwich (rosemary-whatever bread). I have scored at least three free sandwiches because nobody believes I'm ordering the second one for myself during a dine-in. "No, that's the one she wanted; these two are for me." " . . . Are you sure?!" "Is the second one free if I finish them both before we leave?" "Yeah. I dare you."

    Works like a charm!

Knowing other people with such an appetite, you're probably outrageously thin, thanks to a high metabolism.

Edit: I know this because I could eat like this in my 14-17 year old body, and I didn't get any bigger around the waist then either. I can still eat like this if I haven't eaten before supper...

    Mmm-mmmm.

Depending on mood, day, and the form of the meat, I eat between 8 and 20-odd ounces of meat. Plus side-dishes.

Once I ate a meal of about a pound of meat (or more) and a pound of perfect mashed potatoes plus some veggies, and then get an extra serving of potatoes, and extra serving of potatoes, and then some more potatoes. I think I ate at least three or four pounds of potatoes in short order.

I was so terribly overfilled, it hurt, but those potatoes were so good it was worth it... I am not going to repeat it, I am too bulky in the wrong places now, though.

Ah, yeah I can see that. N64 games are the biggest offender for me. They're not old enough to fit into my nostalgia goggles and tend to be where I lost interest in gaming for a while - most of the games I liked didn't make the jump to 3D well. Though I personally blame it more on the clunky mechanics of the early 3D age.

I think N64 can be fairly ugly (though not always - the LoZ games are surprisingly kind of okay) but holy mercy, 3D from PS1 can actually cause head-pounding and nausea.

FF7 is an offender in a big way, and I honestly don’t know how I could have played Tomb Raider... ever. Similarly, I can’t fathom how I made it through Turok (going back to N64).

Sprite work (FFT), and “cleaner” and larger 3D (Eternal Darkness, Vagrant Story) are still okay, to some extent.

I can put away a lot of steak. 12-16oz is a "normal" steak for me (usually a NY Strip - my personal favorite). I can handle a 24-28oz without much issue though. I haven't tried for something as obscene as 48oz.
if I win the lotto, its Peter lugers for you and aiymi and zelda.

Looks like about $50-100/person, which is about what I expected*. What I didn't expect was that it's cash only.

*No, I can't afford that on a spur-of-the-moment either. As part of a planned trip with money set aside specifically for it, we could make it work.

its why Peter lugers always has security outside. People still get mugged after leaving there, even now.

Wow. If a high-end restaurant around here tried to be cash-only, they'd be out of business within a week. No one around here carries that kind of cash... or I should say, "No law-abiding citizen."

I usually carry $0, unless I know I'm going somewhere low-end. Then I've been known to carry $20, maybe even $30...

I had that kind of cash yesterday, but then I immediately handed it over to someone who's removing a lot of plant matter from my yard.

Honestly this is my mantra about video games in general.
I sign under that with one hand. On the other hand, some of the old games are completely unplayable to me nowdays :(
    Such as?/Why so?
Early 3d games are main offender, causing even more nausea than they did in the past. Pixel art games (such as FFVI) are rather ok, but FFVII might be an issue now.

I'll admit, my attempt to play through FF7 didn't get going long enough for me to be frustrated by the graphics.

My FF9 replay had no issues, so either the effects don't bug me as much or it's a late enough game that it doesn't give me problems.

This captain doesn't sit at home twiddling my thumbs on a Friday, I get in early, get s*++ done and go home and relax knowing I did a job well done.

Lazy co-worker one left an hour early today, and co-worker two had done nothing but complain and procrastinated (and we busy. due to clients coming to visit at noon) all day…

Then the boss came in and found only me working/preparing horses for client-presentation…

    Yea the rage was palpeble.

But, yea agree on the work-style-ethic-thing ^^

    Evening John.

I'm about 5 minutes from heading out of the office and picking up Zelda. Of course, her boy has football practice until 6pm, plus he has to shower and change after that, and then food is going to be needed, so we're not going to actually get out of Bloomington until 7:30pm. I predict a midnight arrival at Zelda's mom's house.
