What do I do at 6:30 a.m. on a vacation day?
I go to the hardware store. For fun.
I'm working on a DIY sonic screwdriver that will have lights *and a wood setting*, and not be a cheaply-made plastic mass-produced toy.The only difficult part is getting it to make a noise.
i wish you had told me this a few months ago. I would have asked the cosplayers what they did.

So, there's "California Casual" and then there's, "Oh, gods, what did I just do?"
I've been working on the garage all week, so I haven't been maintaining the mohawk or shaving, and I'm just wearing whatever's comfortable to move around in. Shiro and his son were bored last night, so they drove up to do dinner and a movie with us. We figured we'd do the Himalayan place, since it's fantastic and Shiro's son has never been there.
So up to Solano we go, looking like heck, and Shiro (of course) has to check out Rivoli's menu. We tried to walk past, but Shiro started making it clear he really wanted to do Rivoli.
So yeah, in we went, and because it's us, a table miraculously appeared. And of course, the manager was there, and the owner was there, and they all had to come by the table and chat with us and say, "Hi!"
And I'm normally not a fashionista by any sense, but sitting there looking like I'd just come off a 3-day backpacking trip with a poorly-maintained mohawk it was like, "OK, guys. I know you're really being nice, but I'm personally dropping your dress code by at least 2 notches. Sorry about that!"
And of course they didn't say a word about it. As always, they were just really wonderful, really happy to see us, and gave us a fantastic dining experience.
Loves us some Rivoli. But when even the 24-year-old looks around and says, "You know, I really feel like we're underdressed here...", you tend to notice.
Ah, well. Good dinner, good company, and I'm sure the women who sat next to us will complain bitterly on Facebook about our slovenliness. Gives 'em something to do...

Well, I kinda thought I knew what I was doing. I had an idea of how I wanted to do the build (black steel 3/4" x 5" pipe, brass fittings here and there, a concealed multi-bit screwdriver with push-button led lights, and then conceal some kind of noisemaker under the end cap. Maybe tarted up a bit with some metal tape here and a little epoxy there to lock everything in place.
But... I seem to have hit a bit of a snag.

Nobody, is Hi around? I need an electronics consultant to go with me to that place that Hi and Shiro love, and to be kind about the areas in which my education is lacking.
Hi's down at his brother's place this week, but in theory he should be coming up tonight for dinner and anime. I'll know more later in the day, but if not, Shiro and son are extraordinarily handy, so you could plan on swinging by after around 5:00 pm and meet up with them. Or, if it's the place I'm thinking of, there's one just a mile from Shiro's house (of course), so if you're willing to make the trek down to Fremont it would give him something to do today other than work on his Jeep. And you KNOW he loves shopping for stuff!
Otherwise we're all gathering at the Fake Russian's on Sunday so you can pick both of their brains there. That's what NobodysWife did for her glasses -- she waited until Shiro and Hi were in the same room so they could bounce ideas off each other, then said, "I need this."
It was an impressive trip to the electronics store.

I'm sorry. I had a similar situation with my grandmother, so I know your worry. And those thoughts.
I hope there is something they can do to help with these episodes.

Doctor Who cosplay. Every year at Tekko, there's at least two doctors walking around. And at least one Deadpool, several Jedi/Sith, some Halo Spartans, and so on.

Yeah. Plus, there's the fact that it would just be a nifty thing to make.
My requirements are:It actually has to be usable as a screwdriver (running series joke, doesn't work on wood, "go build yourself a cabinet", etc.)
It has to be heavy-duty, hard and solid enough to double as a cosh (this is the "stun" setting), hence the black steel and brass housing,
It has to make noise and light up,
It has to look cool.

there is at least one booth that sells that. I'll have to find it next year.

Well, we've had about two and a half scints worth of snow today, which meant that, when I went out to buy vegetables, the street was full of children sledging/building snowmen/throwing snowballs, etc.
When I went home, I made a beef and ale pie, which was semi-successful - I used Newcastle Brown, which tasted a bit odd. A pale ale probably would have worked better. After that, I finished off my song about gay Vikings and then did rapier & dagger drills for two hours.

So, we've gotten about 3-4 inches of snow by the time I went out for lunch. I love driving sideways.
EDIT: To be clear for the more lawful and safety-minded, I have a Subaru with winter tires. For all intents and purposes, I only go sideways when I want to, which is when there's nobody else in the vicinity.

Only on Earth (and possibly other planets inhabited by sapient beings). Think of the vast expanses of moron-free void filled with occasional electrons, protons, and neutrons forming clouds of ionized hydrogen and helium.

One scint is slightly less than five feet of snow. So you have had over 12 and a half feet of snow? Freehold DM is going to be upset that you are hogging all the snow.

I had a nice dinner with my (adult) children at the local Japanese Steakhouse. It concluded with probably the worst experience making eye contact (with the server taking my plate away) I have ever had. Fortunately, my youngest child witnessed it, so they knew I wasn't exaggerating when I described it.

Confessions of a Brokeass Mom, Chapter Eight:
You know you're overly frugal stingy when you take your kids to an honest-to-goodness candy store for the first time and they timidly ask for butterscotch disks, starlight mints and candy corn. I had to work to convince them to ask for the good stuff.
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Waste of panda...to be honest I haven't tried panda before, and I'd be happy to...
About bad service:
Once I went to a Korean restaurant serving Ginseng Chicken soup alone. Now when I eat stuff, I usually leave the best for the last. So I ate the chicken, getting my paws dirty. I hate drinking soup with dirty paws, so I told the person at the counter - please don't clear my stuff - I'm going to the restroom to wash my paws. I came back to find the soup cleared.
So I started yowling loudly enough that they brought me a new soup...I suppose I had one and a half servings for the price of one, so I actually came out ahead, so I wasn't too upset at the end of the day.
If the restaurant made less profit, well it was their fault for not paying attention, no? Wasn't as if I didn't tell them afterall...
