It's interesting. I have a few drops of Irish (and French!) blood in me, and noone can tell. Still, I'm more than welcome at all parades.

I *JUST* finished watching the Lobo episodes of the Superman Animated Series.

"I'm the innkeeper at the House of Frag! Oh look, it's checkout time."

I got corned beef and cabbage and potatoes for lunch! I'm liking this St. Patrick's Day stuff.

I've got sixpence,
Jolly, jolly sixpence.
I've got sixpence,
To last me all my life.

I've got sixpence to spend and
Sixpence to lend and
Sixpence to send home to my wife.
Poor wife!

No cares have I to grieve me.
No pretty little girls to decieve me.
I'm happy as a lark, believe me.
As we go rolling rolling home.

Rolling home.
Rolling home.
By the light of the silvery moo-ooo-oo-oon.
Happy is the day when a soldier gets his pay.
And we go rolling, rolling home.

I am English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh, and I was raised Catholic, so I don't know whether to applaud or be appalled. ;)

I am of English, Irish, Scottish, French, German and Australian Aboriginal descent :-) raised not religious.... Although mum used to make me go to the Christian Beach Missions in the holidays to get me out of the house, I think she found the idea of me "Surfing for God" amusing.

Maybe, much like tonsils and strep throat, if you often experience recurring laughter your doctor can have it surgically removed.

I think the context of the period made it pretty clear that you could call anyone "Roman" who followed in any tradition practicing the Nicene Creed. The changing context of the name makes things hard on historians to precisely say what "Roman" meant at any time after Caracalla's declaration of every freeman as a citizen.

Hieronymus Wolf's description of them as "Byzantines" is still weird, but contemporaries in the west did call the Eastern Empire as Imperium Griko or other such things.

Of course, we could also say that the Ottoman Empire was a successful continuation of the Roman Empire...

RE: The Nicenes, the popular meaning of "Roman" was actually the opposite in the later part of this time period. It came to be a synonym with "pagan" (which originally meant redneck!) So yeah, terminology alone makes things difficult. But a whole laundry list of things I think makes it clear that only rank prejudice and certain ideologies keeps the term Roman from the Empire which transfered its capital to the East (which, of course, was done more than once). The other problem with the Nicene claim is that there were non-imperial churches holding to the Nicene creed that were actively persecuted by the Empire.

Contemporaries in the West were in direct competition with their own Holy Roman Empire, which only had geography going for its claim. But the fact that they called it the Greek-speaking Empire, and actively tried to benefit from such things as imperial marriages to buttress their own weak claims, actually supports the fact that they recognized the Empire as continuing in the East. It was more later prejudice that colored the issue.

I'm sorry, but it's hard to take the Ottoman suggestion seriously. Of course, they did try to capitalize on the conquest. That's how the crescent moon came to be the symbol of Islam.

Not quite. The Greeks began to call themselves Romaioi at this time to show their new found Christian beliefs. They...

First of all I have to recommend the podcast 12 Byzantine Rulers by Lars Brownworth.

I am with Mairkurion the Eastern Empire still considered itself the Roman Empire.

The west had broken down due to depopulation by the Antonine Plague, civil war and hyper inflation - It forced the west to rely on the very barbarians that were threatening them for defence. The Western Romans settled large numbers of Germanic peoples within the empire in exchange for military service. This lead to the Germanisation of the west and made the breakdown of the Wester Half easier.

Rome its self had not been the political capital for years... Milan and later Ravenna were far more important and in the east it is was Constantinople.

The East was very interested in reconquering the west Belisarius's campaigns were a good example.

EDIT: I have to go to work and the above is not as coherent as I wish - (makes you kind of lucky I have to go work because I can waffle on for hours about it).

I've listened to the Podcast before. Mairkurion pointed it to me a while back.

The same reason that the eastern empire of the 7th-15th centuries called itself the Empire of Rome is used by the turks who ruled their Sultanate of Rum from the defeat of Romanus Diogenes in 1071 until their conquest by the mongols. Edit: and the Czars, and the Pope, Holy Roman Empire, Popes.../edit

I think there is a point when you have to describe something different with another term. I mean, look at Safavid Persia. They called themselves the Persian Empire, but their leadership was of Kurdish/Azeri descent.

Besides, I think Roman Empire is kind of a cultural misnomer. We call the political entities of that size empire when they're still just autocracy. We lump a title like emperor onto the leader, though very few empires in history had an "emperor". Even the Greeks of the east stopped calling their leader "Imperator" and began calling him "Basileus"... King. The Romans had no king by law... It really shows that the differences in the cultures had made the term "Roman" mean nothing.

Edit: Historically there was king of kings (Shahanshah) that came down from Persia. The title is like "Emperor" in terms of importance, but had little to do with actual power wielded. It also seems that by the time of the rise of the Sassanian dynasty in Persia, only "Emperor" and "Shahanshah" could recognize each others titles for purposes of ascent... since they were the only equals in the world.

Actually, the name I use on these boards is the name of my last D&D character, who was, in fact, a ship's captain, and at the end of the campaign, was offered the slot of admiral in the newly formed navy of the city-state she helped found. So that's more true than you realize. ;)

Same here. If I had wanted to make more money as an engineer, I'd have gotten a job in private industry. As is, I make decent money, and get to help the Navy do it's job.

Plus, one day I'm gonna try to roll dice with Paris onboard ship.

That sounds like good reasoning all the way around, to me. :)

Tangentially, there seems to be a high correlation between gamers and military (or military-related) folks of my acquaintance. Two members of my current gaming group are former Army MPs, and another good friend who also games is a VA lawyer who started out in the Navy. And I seem to notice a lot of military folks posting here. It'd be interesting to see some demographic studies of gamers to determine whether or not that's a real correlation, or whether my circle of acquaintances is an outlier.

It is a beautiful day outside. Inside, well, it feels like I'm being cooked. I'd open the windows, but I'm allergic to the great outdoors. I forget over the winter that being in an upper floor apartment means I need to turn the air on if the outside temp is 60 or above.:)
Here's hoping spring is actually here to stay. Either way looks like it's time to call maintenance and request they take the covers off the air conditioners. Do not want a repeat of last year. I've gone seven months without a trip to urgent care and I'd hate to break that streak.

I feel awful for our civil servants every time I see one of those "DMV hell" or "berserk postal employee" comedy sketches. I'd hate to be the butt of one of those, particularly if unjustified.
