It's actually a really sad thing to realize, because I have an awesome family history on that side that's just going to wither up, die, and be forgotten. I'd be the one to continue the family legacy, but as much as I want to, I'll never be in a position where I can do so, which makes me feel like a disappointment.

Have either you or your sister ever considered donating gametes?

I know it's a lot harder for women than for men, but it's one of those, "Some day, somewhere, out there, my father's line will continue" moments.

Kind of peace of mind of continuing the line without obligations that go with it.

(And yes, while I love my kids, it really is, "Are you ready to put your life on hold for the next 20 years while your kids grow to independence?")

It wouldn't matter. It's not about the genes surviving, and I have seriously broken genes that should NEVER be used to make another human being. It's about the family history surviving with the next generation. Simply having a kid somewhere with my genes does nothing to keep out history alive. Adoption would be a perfectly good solution, but I'm not mentally healthy enough to be a parent and never will be, setting aside that I do not engage in romantic relations and would e a single parent.

The family's going to die, and the worst of it is that I'm too broken to fix it even though I want to.

Bloodline may count for a lot, but family is more than the blood bond . . . .

Compile a family history? Interview all your relations you can, condense the material to its essence, and get a limited print run published. Tywin Lannister might approve. :)

A related note:
I can kinda relate to your state of mind -- for years, my parents have been unwittingly hurtful with their behavior around infants and toddlers, especially my mother. As much as I would like to have a family of my own, and at least one child of my own, the odds are increasingly against it happening. When my nephew was born in December, I was "off the hook", in a manner of speaking; I doubt my parents have realized just how much their fawning and doting hurt my feelings.

I know this is of little to no help, but here it is: don't actively feel bad for your state of living, unless it drives you to improve. A sense of obligation is one of the worst motivators I've ever found for human behavior. That said, though, -- reexamine things as you are faced with new factors: you never know how you might end up carrying on that legacy till you get there. :)

EDIT: facepalms, and then follow's Doomkitten's fine example -- lotsa hugs for our Rosita

Well I'm at work. Again.

With Lundberg manager. Again.

For the fifth week in a row.

Left eye twitches.

Not that I care, hardly even noticed, personally.

It's too slow for a Tuesday night during a week when the temps are in the sixties for the first time in six months, and we have a sale on bikes and powerwheels.

Well, nothing quite for a depressive episode like a bit of carpentry. And by that I mean beating miniature metal spikes into a cheapass broken old IKEA bookcase until it stops moving, while imagining Grandpa asking me why the hell I'm not using screws and criticizing my hammering technique and asking me pointed questions about politics.

Vibes and hugs, Rosita.

I'm in a similar situation, I have very self-destructive genes -- well, just the one really. But anyway, I'd consider it a kind of child abuse to have biological children. And while lately I have thought about adoption, it's not something that makes me feel like Yes, I must do this!!!

I know that plenty of folks have kids for less reason or no reason at all, but my personal belief is that you should really want to have kids to have kids. So far I'm finding that being a part-time quasi-father for my wife's children to be about the right level of parenthood for me.

Well, again, hugs and vibes!

Oh, this day just gets better.

There's major flooding in San Jose. The part of San Jose I grew up in, to be exact. My family doesn't live there anymore, but a lot of old schoolmates or their families do, and I don't have their contact info to check in on them.

The reason why I do not want kids of my own is because I do not trust myself to keep my temper under control and I do not wish depression upon anyone. I have worked on both but I also feel that at 47 I am too old to have kids.

Speaking of genetics, my youngest child pretty much confirmed with their psychiatrist that they have bipolar disorder, which my aunt and my sister suffer from.

I'm hoping that it won't affect my child as badly as it has my sister and aunt. It's been really rough for both of them.

How you (occasionally) get reminded that you married the right person:
We're hanging out after putting the kids to bed, he's leveling up his character and I'm randomly searching Etsy for gaming-related stuff.
I find hand-tooled leather book covers to make your Players Guide/Bestiary/etc. look like the Necronomicon or similar.
I comment aloud on this and mention the shocking cost.
His response:

"Well, maybe not my Player's Handbook, but it would be well worth $75 to put one of those on my N.I.V."

I think I'll keep him around another 21 years.

What is it about thieves and our stuff?

So, we have no idea how it happened, but apparently we left the Prius unlocked during garbage day. Not to make any widespread social commentary, but it is well known around here that on garbage day, the people from the homeless encampment down by the water walk the streets, go through your recycling to take out anything with a deposit value, and check your car to see whether it's unlocked.

So, our car was unlocked, someone rifled through the whole thing, and stole... a bunch of parking change.

I'm rather surprised -- there was a FasTrak transponder, a bunch of CDs, iPhone chargers, Nintendo DS chargers, registration information, other electronic knick-knacks, mints, etc. And the person took... loose change.

So now we've been robbed burgled twice. And both times were relieved of... loose change.

I think we need to get more valuable stuff or something.

EDIT: I do have to admire the Albany police, though. They dutifully took my phone call, logged the incident, and treated the $3 theft with all the respect it deserved. "OK, we've logged it, and we'll watch for more incidents in that area, but we're not sending an officer to waste half an hour of your/his/her time taking a full report."

There's an old joke from the 80s my uncle used to tell all the time about trying to sell his Packers season tickets, giving up, and leaving them on the dashboard with his car unlocked while he went to go see a movie at the mall. Only to come back later with an extra pair of season tickets sitting on his dashboard.

And here, I thought it was some sort of joke about a Prius.

(I have no idea why, as I don't do much of that research, but I hear a lot of weird jokes about the Prius, so...)

I would like one more snow before winter ends, but I don't see that happening, considering the week's worth of 60s and 70s.

Anyway, my youngest son vomited again today.

This is now his second "relapse" after finishing his medicines.

I am officially concerned.

Still, it's not quite what I'd expect from a true "relapse"...

First, both relapse-vomits were exclusively in the morning before I'd gotten him up.

Second, there could well be reasons other than some recurring disease - yesterday, I learned (to my horror) that he can now dig through the trash to grab and attempt to eat discarded food (the one I'd found had been a bar his brother had discarded, still in the wrapper), and as well, I had a stomach-issue myself this morning - albeit mine was different than his own - so it could be that we both picked up something somewhere together.

And it's very possible that each instance is unrelated - I know that the second time, I just figured it was because of the very nasty-smelling poopsplosion he'd created that had broken his diaper (I nearly responded that way myself when cleaning it up).

Beyond that, over-all, each time has been a "lesser" occurrence - although it kind of seems like a relapse, it's no where near as bad as the one before it, which isn't even close to the one before that. Plus his poopy more-or-less continues to normalize.

Nonetheless: concerned. Trying to figure what is best to do, and how best to handle this, especially as his vomiting comes with one or more days in between each instance, and doesn't seem to be perfectly correlated to his diet, but neither does he have any other symptoms.

So.

:/

EDIT: to be clear, yeah, I'm on EST, and I've known about this for a while. I just haven't posted on it 'til now.
