NobodysHome, Lawful Stupid Good Samaritan.
I've got a bit of a cold today. I'd call it "mild", but it was bad enough to make me take the day off work, my lungs are a bit burn-y, I get tired really easily, and it's hard to focus.
But... the kids declared this morning that they wanted pumpkins, so I dutifully started walking over to the corner store to get some. At which point I ran into our wonderful gardening neighbor. He's had two strokes and can barely walk, but he sits in his garden all day and does amazing things. He was complaining about the tiny green waste bins in Kensington, and I'd previously pointed out that I'd be happy to let him use our ginmormous bin, which we never more than half-fill.
So of course he chose today to ask for the favor. And I'm not about to say, "No," the very first time he asks, so cue sick NobodysHome carrying a 32-gallon trash can full of green waste a block back to his house, dumping it, bringing the empty can back, then proceeding to the corner store that is sold out of pumpkins.
Being a Good Samaritan -- it'll kill ya, kids!
Uh, anything special prevented you from sending the kids to the store in walking distance in the first place?
Or had the USA reached the points of madness when you can't send a 15-year old to a nearby store without parental escort?

The fact that they're not home makes that more difficult...
Nah, it's the issue of time. Impus Major doesn't get home 'til 4:00 pm, then he has homework and pumpkin carving to get done before he can go out, and thanks to our broken pendulum of an educational system that'll be at least 3 hours. So the 15 minutes to send them to go do it is honestly more than I think they can spare.
And since the store was out, I would've had to go out anyway, just much later and in a bit of a panic...
EDIT: And yes, my 15-year-old son leaves the house at 7:30 am, gets home at 4:00 pm, and is guaranteed at least 2 hours of homework a night, so his "work" schedule is heavier than mine. And everyone keeps sending me articles about Finland's very successful "no homework" school system and I say, "I know, I know."
But seriously, when Impus Major is on his THIRD PAGE of filling in atomic symbol, number, number of protons, number of electrons, number of neutrons, and atomic weight you have to wonder what the heck the teacher is thinking. That she sent home 3 pages of such tables 3 nights in a row is just an exercise in ticking off your students...

The perfect Halloween!
We found out earlier today the child molester that's lived on our block was sent back to prison and can no longer live there (non compliant is a beautiful thing!)
Our neighborhood was full of life because of it.
It was 60 degrees out.
The kids got so much candy! So much!
If I could afford the commute I'd trick or treat the hell out of Freehold's building. :-)
Happy Halloween FaWtL Folks!!

Interesting -- Daylight Savings has absolutely devastated Halloween around here. I'd say "decimated", but it's fallen off by a heck of a lot more than 10%.
6:04 pm here, decorations all up and down the street (unlike last year's dismal performance where we got all of maybe 12 kids because the street was so dark), and we have... 0 visitors so far.
I know the middle school crowd will show up in an hour or so... they know I give out full-sized bars, and I'm very popular as a result. (Including some kids who change into different costumes and return 2-3 times. As I've mentioned, if they're going to go to the trouble to change, I'll spare the $0.50 for the bar.)
Man, I was going to write $0.25, but it really is up to $0.50. I'm getting old.

Took car to the mechanic today. Needs some brake work, as expected. What I wasn't expecting was to be told that the struts are wearing out and need to be replaced soon. They're not broken, but are on their way. Of course, these are factory struts which are usually replaced at around 60k or so miles, and these have already done 95k, so that's not too bad. The timing sucks though.

So, I feel both better and worse about Halloween this year.
We got maybe 15-20 "little ones" (kids 6 and under), MUCH better than last year. And with it starting to rain right at 7 pm, I'm pretty happy with that turnout.
We got maybe 25-30 "mid-sized ones" (kids 7-14), which is an OK turnout.
Unfortunately, I bought my candy at Costco, and 10 pounds of mini-bars plus 150 full-sized bars is... slightly excessive.
Anyone driving through Albany can have a free pound or two of candy.
That is all.
