As many of you know, I have no patience for computers not working.

This weekend after months of negotiation, I got an old computer(4 years, which to some in the field means it should barely be able to run dos), from my friends mom, who formatted the hard drive and gave me a ride over to my house. I removed my ancient desktop computer
(Legit, it runs windows 98) and put in the new one, the new monitor, keyboard, and everything and fished out the windows 8 usb my friend got me a month back just for this occasion and tried to get it up and running.

No go.

I am not the most technologically savvy person on the planet so I chalked it up to dullwittedness on my part at first. Went to Google, YouTube, everything I could think of. It seemed to be relatively simple, just make some changes in the bios so that the usb would be recognized. I cannot say I became an expert under any circumstances, but I learned more about bios in the next few hours than I have in my entire life. Nothing worked.

I was about to put my fist through the shiny new monitor when I realized that I was going down the wrong road. I would never be able to turn myself into one of those weird computer people no matter how hard I tried, but I had infinitely more patience with people than with machines. My computer friends didnt return my texts, but I had the information I needed to be able to contact the company and get some answers, or at least be able to eliminate some useless questions. One 15 minute phone call later and i have the worst possible answer - the computer won't recognize windows 8 as the bios simply won't work with it. I need to get my hands on a windows 7 cd somehow.

This is disappointing news at best, but at least i was able to find the answers I needed. Now to do what my wife has been begging me to do and call my unsavory brother in law to see if he has a windows 7 anything lying around...

Yeah, this is why I will *always*, forevermore, build my own computers.

Many of the "manufactured" PC motherboards are now coming out with BIOS that locks down the operating system. "You can only run these operating systems on this BIOS." Having been involved in writing BIOSes in the past, this is so fundamentally in opposition to the concept of a BIOS that I want to slap everyone who ever agreed to this idea.

So, you got an old proprietary BIOS, and that old proprietary BIOS is configured to allow only Windows 7.

Depending on your tech-savvyness (your post belies your claim), you can usually get the motherboard manufacturer and part number (for example, ASUS NCC-4701), Google it with the word "BIOS", and find a BIOS for the motherboard that someone hacked to allow all OSes. It's non-trivial, and if done wrong can wreck the motherboard, but I've done it before when someone gave me an OEM motherboard that displeased me.

On the other hand, as others have said, you're WAAAAAAAAY better off shelling out for Windows 7. You'll be happier in the long run, and you don't have to deal with the BIOS.

EDIT: I just realized it might be Windows 8 that's at fault: "I don't recognize this motherboard, so I'm not going to install here." That would surprise me (Microsoft does want to rule the world, after all), but it's another possibility...

Friendship is Dragons

It's MLP:FiM reinvisioned through the lens of, "What if this were a campaign run in D&D 4E, [Equestria Variant]?"

So, basically DM of the Rings or Darths & Droids but with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I'm given to understand that they take the series, chop it up, and reorder/reorganize things substantially to make a better Table Top comic out of it, but I'm not entirely aware of all of that.

As of last week I've watched the first four episodes of MLP:FiM, and: they're okay. Not the best, but certainly better than a lot of the dross out there. With my initial exposure, I am surprised that it received quite as large a following (or as notable a following) as it did, but I would have been more surprised if it had not garnered a solid following.

Over-all, though, I actually think the webcomic is better.

(But you can binge-read the webcomic, and then you don't have the pacing restrictions that a kids show has.)

I've been wanting to play a new game for a while now.

A long while.

And I've finally figured out what I want from the title.

So, here's what I want:
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy VI
- Wind Waker
- Twilight Princess
- Vagrant Story
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Neverwinter Nights (especially Hordes of the Underdark and 2's Mask of the Betrayer)
- Kingmaker
- Second Darkness
- Skulls and Shackles
- Iron Gods
- Reign of Winter
- Wrath of the Ri- ah, dang, I'm listing APs again, aren't I?

DANG IT, PAIZO, MAKE A VIDJA GAME OF Y'R STUFF.

This, it should be noted, is rather tongue-in-cheek, and any ire is not actually directed at Paizo, so much as it is the tangled mess of legality that is split between Atari, Bioware, Obsidian, WotC, Hasbro, and the SRD and similar such things. Paizo is not, of course, at liberty to make a game based off of their actual mechanics - or it's legally fuzzy enough whether or not they are that they're uninterested in trying, as it may well break them. This is mostly just my frustration at this kind of stupid situation in which Paizo makes an awesome product but are prohibited from doing anything with it because vague legalities and an - in my mind unhealthy, in this case - spirit of competition. Of course, I'm still bitter about WotC not being able to make a genuine 4E NWN-style or FFT-style game; that likely would have sold like hotcakes and could been pretty excellent, to boot. It's also the only edition, to my knowledge, that didn't get a semi-good-faith attempt at a direct translation of rules-to-computer (even if third party in the oldest cases). Lame.

(But, uh, I really do want a game several games that combines various aspects of those into an awesome whole...)

FINAL FANTASY VI IS EPIC!

And considering all of the choices I've seen so far, I'm going to end up replaying it a lot.

Only complaint that I have is that, for now at least, combat is a wee bit easy. I attribute that to the a) insane amount of rando monsters I get that let me grind while continuing the story and b) I think that one of the monsters rando-dropped a tool that Edgar wasn't supposed to have yet: the auto-crossbow. That thing is monstrous: I can use it every turn, deals more damage than a regular attack, and hits everything.

So... how does "parking etiquette" work where y'all live?

We live in a residential neighborhood where most houses have a stupidly-short driveway (we're talking 12-14' here), and then 1-2 street parking spaces. The lucky house across the street from us has 3. We have only 1.

So most of the residents follow the "golden rule" of, "Don't park in front of someone else's house unless you have to." Occasionally our neighbor up the street has to put his truck in front of our house for a day or two, but it's no more than once every month or two. When our southern neighbors have visitors, we'll occasionally find a car in front of our house. No big deal. Again, maybe once every couple of months.

Then came the northern neighbors' "visitors".

I strongly suspect they're running an illegal B&B out of their (rental) house, or they've taken on additional (unleased) tenants, or something, but they've gone from 2 cars to 5. Suddenly they have a tan SUV parking in front of our house every. Single. Day. And overnight. The moment we move our car, our space gets taken, and I have to lurk and wait until they move and then pounce to re-take our spot.

So... how often is "too often" for a neighbor to park in the one space in front of your house? Daily? Weekly? It's reached the point that I'm pondering calling the city to report an illegal business (I Googled and she has one) and the landlord to report illegal tenants (there are now at least 5 people living there, and I know the landlords and it's leased for 3).

But other than the parking issues, they're perfectly nice neighbors, so I'm not looking to get them evicted. I just want them to stop letting their guests park in front of my house. (Even worse is that the owner of the tan SUV walks with a serious limp, so I'd look like a jerk telling him not to park in front of my house. But gee... they have TWO spaces in front of their house, AND a longer-than usual driveway. Maybe they could give HIM one of their three spaces instead of delegating him to one of my two?)

Anyway, just curious how other FaWtLers deal with limited parking in residential neighborhoods.

As a total aside, have you ever noticed that the people who lack parking etiquette are also the people who feel they need to let their cars "warm up" by idling for 5-10 minutes before they start driving? I swear, if I have to listen to that SUV idling in front of my house all winter I'm going to pull the trigger and have them removed...

I'll bite, what are your "lulu based dreams" based on.

I did a search for lulu, and all I got was three year old reviews of a dating app that "will ruin online dating" according to the Washington Post, or Wall Street Journal (pretty much the same paper anyway).

Pretty sure they're referring to the woman

In my city this thing happened and while I didn't know the woman losing her parking space or the person taking it. She resolved it by have the poor persons vehicle towed away by the city. Something I didn't even know was legal... But since the city towed it then it must be. No one took that spot again. Who wants their car impounded? But if you want to keep them as friends then it might be best to talk to them first.

Oh, yeah. I'll speak with them about it before I do anything. Albany has a "3-day" parking law, where a car that's been in the same spot for 3 days or more can be towed, but it's only enforced if the resident complains. When we first moved here there was what looked like an abandoned car in front of the house. I called the police and they asked, "Want us to tow it?"

I said, "I thought you had to wait 3 days?"
They replied, "Nah. If the resident complains, we figure it's enough of a nuisance we just tow it."

I convinced the grumbling officer to yellow-tag the car instead ("Move in 3 days or you're towed"), and the car vanished in under 24 hours.

I can resolve this particular issue. I'm just more interested in the general feelings of FaWtL members: Is it "rude" to repeatedly park in front of a stranger's house for days on end?
Is it even "ruder" if it becomes obvious that the resident is trying to keep his space, and to keep doing it?

Or is your feeling that "parking is anarchy" and if I want the space I should have a car in it at all times?

I feel that the space in front of a persons house is their space. Parking in that space should be limited to necessity, and vacated as soon as able. Leaving your broken-down beater there for months is not acceptable. An overnight stay because you are sleeping off the party at your friends house is cool.

Well-said. That's pretty much exactly my opinion. I just wanted to get some opinions from around the internet before I spoke to my neighbor about the issue.

Yes. I am soliciting opinions from the internet before performing an action.
