ponders birthday vacation plans at the end of her work day
Hey, I have a question for the New York City FAWTLies:
If a person were to travel to NYC by train, and wanted to stay a couple of nights in a hotel in NY within an easy subway or walking commute of Penn Station, what would you recommend? Assume a budget of up to $200/night for hotel room, but cheaper would be better. Basic (Days Inn/Holiday Inn level) amenities are fine, but I don't want to stay in a fleabag.
I may come back looking for museum/sightseeing/restaurant suggestions, but first I'm trying to figure out if I can actually afford the trip and lodging in a non-sleazy place. :)

NYC hotels are painful. I stayed a couple times at the Days Inn on 46th St, but I can't say I would recommend it. Plus, there are usually cheaper options.
Or you could stay in FHDM's jacuzzi.

What sorts of cheaper options, bthat wouldn't involve sleeping under a bridge or putting myself in danger (single woman, traveling alone--safety is a consideration)? I have acquaintances up there, but no one I'm close enough to to invite myself to crash at their place for a weekend.

Are you absolutely sure?
You would, if you weren't such a Luddite.

I probably could, but I'm not sure if I deserve to go crawlin' back to any of the ones I dropped when I had my bout of not existing anymore.

I think when you're ready to go back, they'll be glad to have you. :)

I'll have to ask after I'm done with Fire Emblem, then. :D

Exactly, you're a creative fellow and anyone would be lucky to have you. If they don't understand pressures of life then more fool them.

Why, yes he is. :)
I'm about an hour north of NYC. I don't know much about city hotels, but most of this area has good mass transit access. If you check out the metro north railroad line up the Hudson river, many of them are a short trip to grand central with connecting shuttle to Penn Station. Not in the city, but it might be quieter and cheaper.

I'll think about stuff outside Manhattan, but if the trip works out, I'll only be there for two days, so I'd really like to minimize the time I spend dealing with transportation in and out of the city.

I could use some help...

Liquid courage helps alleviate the nervousness of public speaking.
Looks like you have very little time to cobble the information together, right? Get a pencil and paper and write anything that comes to mind concerning your brother. Anything. Time yourself for 5 to 10 minutes. Then look and see what you have. If anything seems worthwhile to use at a wedding such as punch lines from when you were kids, that'd work too. Then formulate ideas based on those to write down.
I end up putting them on note cards, or at least do it from Word and then print it out and cut them out and put them on appropriate sized cards. I'll have the header of each topic one bold colored and then certain content italicized as reminders in case your nerves kicks in a little. It helps to have trigger words to help you memorize what you're supposed to talk about.
It works better (for me) when you're putting it together when you're down to the wire because it's still fresh in your head.

"As the bridegroom's brother I'd like to offer the bride my condolences, and wish you both good luck. [insert anecdote that will make your brother squirm] ...[name of brother], I love you, I hope I will come to like your new wife almost as much as I do you, and again, good luck.
It'll still suck, but it won't do so for very long at least.
And yeah, just roping you in like that isn't very nice. Hasn't he got any friends to take care of the bestman-thing?

Urizen--I don't drink (which, apparently, pisses my brother off for some reason) so 'liquid courage' isn't an option. I have no inside jokes or anything like that either.
Kajehase--I have no anecdotes or anything of that nature. We've never been very close.
CJ--As much as I might like to say that, it would likely result in a lot of drama, even said as a joke.
