One level gunslinger

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 1

I have a PFS gunslinger, and would love to hear your assesment and suggestions.

I could not realy come up with a good build for the class, but as I was playing up a switch hitter, it occured to me that gunslinger was an acceptable one level dip for that character.

Being a 12 level campaign I have only focused on abilities up to that point.

The build is pretty straight forward. 1 gunslinger level, 1 ranger level and 10 fighter levels.
The character ends up with full BAB and most fighter abilities. In addition the character gains access to firearms and a number of ranger skills and abilities.
For firearm I choose a musket (free) and take the Heirloom Weapon trait for another free masterwork musket.
I take point blank shot, quickdraw and deadly aim early, which results in a (+3 BAB, +2 Dex, +1 trait, +1 enhancement, +1 point blank shot, -1 deadly aim) +7 (1d12+3/x4) ranged touch attack at 3rd level. Before switching to greatsword +8 (2d6+9/19-20)(+3 BAB, +4 Str, +1 weapon focus, +1 enhancement, -1 power attack).
The slow reload of the musket are inconsequential due to the short encounter distances in organized play and I will often be fireing at first range increment and point blank range.

The ranged attack bonus is relatively low, even at high levels, but being a touch attack I can easily hit most opponents.

Isn't a gunslinger a fighter variant? In that case isn't it impossible to be 1 level of gunslinger and 10 fighter?

With the trait Heirloom weapon you only get the masterwork part for free (This heirloom weapon is of masterwork quality (but you pay only the standard cost at character creation)), so you still have to pay the 1000gp yourself.

Yep. Sorry mate, it just doesn't work out.

Thats true. I missed that completely - both of it.

So I actually only have one gun and have to drop fighter levels for a mix of gunslinger and ranger levels.

I will have to look at it again, but sounds like you just ruined the concept, Auke. Thanks!

:D

Yeah, I am really trying to make the GS work out some how.

The only redeeming thing to it (PFS wise) is the access to guns which otherwise are barred.

And grit, if only to keep the gun from blowing up. But yeah, I'll agree with you there. If guns weren't costed so insanely, the strait fighter is a better gunslinger.

I'm not really pleased with this idea myself - it's far cheaper to take a level in gunslinger than take three feats to emulate the first level in gunslinger, making it a 'dipping class', something I truly despise.

I have a 6th level rogue who's a prime candidate for a gunsliner dip (both ruleswise and storywise).

What does the character "look" like? I am trying to build a swashbuckling pirate that uses pistols and a cutlass (scimitar), but I just can't get the mechanics to mesh. He would be similar in concept to your switch hitter, just using maneuvers to overcome his reduced damage output.

He is nowhere near optimized if that is what you are looking for.

This is the character

Rolled up a Gunslinger1/ Ranger 4 today as a character in a homebrew. Liked the way it worked out I rolled up a lvl1 gunslinger for PFS. Ranger skills mesh perfectly to fill in those that gunslinger didn't have and a huntsman/frontiersman needed.
