Is there an official ruling on this ability?

"This evolution may be taken once for every five levels the summoner possesses"

does that mean 1, 10, 15, 20?

or 5, 10, 15, 20

or 1, 5, 10, 15, 20?

My Dm says nopt till 5th, i say its open at first, but want to know if there has ever been a ruling?

I'd say your DM is right, because otherwise it would say "once, plus one additional time for every additional 5 levels," the same way that Maker's Call says "The summoner can use this ability once per day at 6th level, plus one additional time per day for every four levels beyond 6th." Also, the Ability Increase evolution says "It can only be applied once to an individual ability score, plus 1 additional time for every 6 levels the summoner possesses." Which would be 1st, 6th, 12th, and 18th.

Sovereign Court

Its a tricky one because RAW your DM is correct, but it certainly feels like it is intended to be taken available at 1st and there are no other 1 point evolutions - correct me if I am wrong - that have a level limit.

Personally since I feel it is a very good 1 point evolution I would err on the side of caution and tell my players 5th level, there are plenty of other great evolutions to take in the meantime.

Dark Archive

It starts at 5; and yes, it is very good.

Is there any official ruling that anyone knows of?

The statement can be read different ways.

As for it being very powerful, a bi-ped eidilon has a starting ac of 13 without this evolution. 13 or 15, either way not that OP.

Yeah, RAW it is delayed until level 5. However, my GM houseruled it being taken once and again every 5th.

1st, RAW is not an official clarification on the matter.
2nd, RAW can be interpreted different ways, thus my question.

3rd Found this after looking around throiugh archives. written by Joshua Frost, the PF society rules guy.

"As for the Improved Natural Armor evolution, that last sentence is unfortunately not very clear. Here's the intent and how you should handle it until the class is finalized:

The intent was that you could take it at level 1, level 10, level 15, and level 20. So it should read something like, "This evolution may be taken once for every five levels the summoner possesses, minimum level 1." So you could take it at level 1, but then you'd need ten summoner levels to take it again (level 10), 15 summoner levels to take it a third time, and 20 summoner levels to take it a fourth time.

Hope this helps!"

I'm sent the link to my DM to see what his thoughts are.

Intention versus written is/will always be a circular argument. This evolution is the victim of poor copyediting and/or vague language, something Paizo's not usually guilty of (just don't read the Craft Wondrous Item stuff!)

I think Josh's comments have merit, I think your interpretation also has merit, and the RAW's language has merit. But, the eidolon does gain a +2 to AC at level 2, plus evasion, so it's a matter of wading through some kobolds and skeletons, blowing a few rejuvenate eidolon spells, and falling back on summoning dire dolphins! With 18 CHA, you could Summon Monster 7 times/day.

And if only you could drop those on someone's head- damn you RAW! [shakes fist]

I read it as needing 5 levels of summoner to use the evolution, which I also feel is kinda harsh.

If you go RAW, there's nothing really ambiguous about "This evolution can be taken once for every five levels the summoner possesses." It is simply a matter of whether you want house rulings that are more intuitive.

if there was nothing ambiguous about it, I would not be spending time digging around and asking questions.

If you think it's clear cut then fine, but you should realize that not everyone reads that the same way. With no minimum level given it leave sit to the reader to interject at what levels this can be taken. 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 5 10, 15, 20 or once between 1-5, again between 6-10 and so on. No where does it say that you must have 5 levels, merely saying for each 5 levels it can only be chosen once.

The new base form, Aquatic, from Ultimate Magic appears to start with Improved Natural Armor as one of its evolutions. I guess that means its a level 1 option?
